Present knowledge of the Entomofauna of the Maltese Islands

    Get PDF
The Maltese Islands' strategic position in the centre of the Mediterranean basin and in between the Siculo Tunisian sill, always encouraged a number of foreign naturalists to visit and study their local entomofauna. A number of Maltese naturalists also contributed to such investigations. All this activity yielded a substantial amount of literature, sometimes with descriptions of possibly endemic species. Unfortunately, some of these earlier published works and those found in Maltese journals, are not easily accessible. A brief general account of the entomofauna inhabiting the Maltese Islands is provided, citing general works in which earlier citations may be found and where possible indicating lack of research on certain insect groups.peer-reviewe

We describe a general method for expanding a truncated G-iterative Hasse-Schmidt derivation, where G is an algebraic group. We give examples of algebraic groups for which our method works

Advantage through training? A microeconometric evaluation of the employment effects of active labour market programmes in Poland

We estimate the employment effects of training, intervention works (subsidised employment), and public works programmes in Poland. The analysis is based on retrospective monthly calendar information on the labour force state and active labour market programme (ALMP) participation between January 1992 and August 1996. The data are obtained from the Polish Labour Force Survey of August 1996 and its Supplement on Labour Market Policies. Because there is no general agreement on the appropriate evaluation methodology when working with non-experimental data, we use two widely applied approaches to identify causal effects. First, non-parametric estimates of the programme effects are obtained on the basis of matched samples. Second, we use traditional econometric modelling in the form of duration models with unobserved individual heterogeneity. We find that training improves the employment opportunities of both men and women, whereas intervention and public works do not: intervention works prolong unemployment for both genders as do public works for men. The number of observations on women in public works is too small to make a statistically safe statement. In general, all ALMP effects are larger in absolute size for men than for women. --evaluation,microeconometrics,active labour market policy,Poland

Functionality and history of electronics in regards to the performance practice of the following works: Temazcal (1984), Javier Álvarez, and Memory Palace (2012), Christopher Cerrone

Master's Project (M.Mu.) University of Alaska Fairbanks, 2016The Electroacoustic pieces; Temazcal (1984), by Javier Alvarez (b.1956), and Memory Palace (2012) by Christopher Cerrone (b.1984), each employ different types of electronic technologies in their realization through performance. This paper will discuss the origin and history of the technology applied respectively in the works. I will examine the role of percussion within the works, specifically in regards to learning and problem solving through technological challenges in order to effectively perform the compositions. By looking at Temazcal and Memory Palace through the context of their historical significance as electroacoustic works, the inherent functionality of the technology employed in each, and the resultant performance practices that have subsequently developed, a greater musical appreciation and understanding of electroacoustic works, in general, is possible

Tree decomposition and parameterized algorithms for RNA structure-sequence alignment including tertiary interactions and pseudoknots

We present a general setting for structure-sequence comparison in a large class of RNA structures that unifies and generalizes a number of recent works on specific families on structures. Our approach is based on tree decomposition of structures and gives rises to a general parameterized algorithm, where the exponential part of the complexity depends on the family of structures. For each of the previously studied families, our algorithm has the same complexity as the specific algorithm that had been given before.Comment: (2012

JJ-pairing Interactions of Fermions in a Single-jj Shell

In this talk I shall introduce our recent works on general pairing interactions and pair truncation approximations for fermions in a single-j shell, including the spin zero dominance, features of eigenvalues of fermion systems in a single-j shell interacting by a JJ-pairing interaction.Comment: 10 pages and 4 figures, international symposiu

A General Equilibrium Self-Employment Theory based on Human Capital Differences

Since a big proportion of the labor force in developing countries belongs to the self-employment sector, it is desirable to build models to study these dynamics. Previous works study the occupational choices of agents. The most recent ones build general equilibrium economies with three types of agents: entrepreneurs, workers and self-employees. Unfortunately, in theses works at equilibrium, workers are poorer than agents in self-employment. Data for developing countries shows that self-employment provides a subsistence level for most agents, with workers earning a higher level of income. This work builds a general equilibrium model that is consistent with this observationSelf-Employment
