Using common graphics hardware for multi-agent traffic simulation with CUDA

Today's graphics processing units (GPU) have tremendous resources when it comes to raw computing power. The simulation of large groups of agents in transport simulation has a huge demand of computation time. Therefore it seems reasonable to try to harvest this computing power for traffic simulation. Unfortunately simulating a network of traffic is inherently connected with random memory access. This is not a domain that the SIMD (single instruction, multiple data) architecture of GPUs is known to work well with. In this paper the authors will try to achieve a speedup by computing multi-agent traffic simulations on the graphics device using NVIDIAs CUDA framework

Pour ce faire, des choix méthodologiques ont été effectués, choix loin d’être anodins tant dans la conception de l’objet qu’ils témoignent que dans leur impact sur les résultats obtenus. Avec un déploiement qui s\u27infiltre toujours plus profon- dément au cœur des activités humaines, le numérique est principalement présenté comme une technologie de rupture, un paradigme incontournable et indispensable à l\u27amélioration de tous secteurs d\u27activité. Nous lui devons indiscutablement l\u27ère de l\u27information : l\u27accès immédiat à l\u27ensemble du savoir humain et la communication ins- tantanée sont par exemple des acquis d\u27une envergure à ne pas minimiser. Depuis quelques années, notre pays s’est engagé dans une politique active en faveur de la transition écologique et du développement soutenable. C’est dans ce contexte que le ministère de l’enseignement supérieur et de la recherche (MESR) a produit, à la demande de la première ministre, un plan Climat/Biodiversité et transition écologique de l’enseignement supérieur et de la recherche. Ce plan prévoit notamment que tous les établissements de l’enseignement supérieur et de la recherche produisent un bilan des émissions de gaz àeffet de serre (BEGES) générées par leurs activités. Computer Assistance for International Team Research (CAITR): A New Communications Medium for IIASA

A discussion is currently under way at IIASA about the most promising uses for the computer communication network now being developed here. This paper is a contribution to that discussion. As such, it proposes a new form of computer-mediated group interaction intended to assist geographically scattered groups of scientists in performing truly collaborative research. We shall refer to such interaction as CAITR (Computer Assistance for International Team Research). CAITR does not yet exist, but its components do (hardware and software, team research strategies, etc.). In the author's opinion, IIASA has a unique opportunity to assemble these components into a new research tool of value not only for IIASA and its collaborators but for the world scientific community as a whole

The ecology and conservation of the white-winged nightjar Caprimulgus candicans

In the tradition of previous studies of threatened species, this thesis was undertaken with the aim of improving our understanding of the ecology of the White-winged Nightjar Caprimulgus candicans, and providing the information necessary to facilitate conservation efforts on its behalf. In 1998–2001, I studied a population of White-winged Nightjars at Aguará Ñu, an area of cerrado habitats within the Reserva Natural del Bosque Mbaracayú, eastern Paraguay. Over the course of three fieldwork seasons, I captured and ringed a total of 49 nightjars (34 adults and 15 young birds). Young females first bred at approximately one year old, while still in pre-definitive plumage. Young males exhibited a form of delayed plumage maturation, whereby they only attained definitive plumage following a prolonged moult spanning much of their first potential breeding season. No evidence was obtained to suggest that they succeeded in breeding while in this conspicuously intermediate state of moult. Considerable variation was noted in the plumage whiteness of definitive males, but no clear evidence was found for consistent age-related increases in white. During the breeding season, males defended small aggregated display territories, at which they conducted nuptial display flights between late August and early January. Female nightjars were responsible for all the parental care, and apparently visited male display arenas solely to obtain copulations. Chick paternity data confirmed that the study population was polygynous, with patterns of male aggregation suggestive of an exploded lek or ‘landmark’ mating system. Radio-telemetry studies showed that nightjars utilised home ranges of at least 20 to 40 hectares during the eight to ten months for which they were monitored. Home ranges contained a disproportionately large amount of young campo cerrado vegetation, but no forest or old campo cerrado habitats. When selecting foraging sites within their ranges, nightjars preferred younger and avoided older campo cerrado vegetation; wet grassland was utilised roughly in proportion to its availability. Observed patterns of habitat selection were potentially explained by the greater abundance of insect prey in younger habitats. When selecting daytime roost sites, nightjars preferred vegetation of intermediate age, reflecting their need for a balance between cover and ease of access. A more general analysis of patterns of sexual dimorphism within the Caprimulgidae showed that, although almost 80% of nightjar species exhibit some dimorphism of plumage whiteness, the study species was by far the most extreme case. The striking plumage of the male was partly explained by a strong positive relationship between wing white and openness of breeding habitats within the family. However, this failed to explain the complete absence of white in the female plumage, or the extent of white dimorphism shown by the species. The most likely explanation would appear to be that extreme plumage dimorphism occurred in conjunction with the evolution of polygyny and female-only care in this open-country species. The implications of these findings for the conservation of the White-winged Nightjar are highlighted, and recommendations are proposed for future work and conservation action.This work was funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council [studentship number: 98A1S04126]

Manufacturability verification through feature-based ontological product models

To achieve efficient, fast and cost effective production, designers must consider all the manufacturing stages a product has to go through. A case study in a manufacturing setup shows that owing to the differences in perception of an engineering component, the coordination between design and manufacturing becomes difficult. Semantic interoperability problems are therefore faced when knowledge sharing for the purpose of manufacturability verification is attempted through computer-based knowledge bases. Ontologies have a reputation for solving semantic interoperability problems. Combined with shape feature-based models of components, ontologies provide a basis for seamless knowledge sharing. This article demonstrates the use of ontologies for analyzing the manufacturability of engineering components in the early design stages. This is done by developing shape feature-based ontological models of these components and associating manufacturability knowledge with these models. To achieve this, an ontological modelling technique is proposed that uses shape feature-based geometrical models of engineering components as building blocks. The knowledge associated with these models to demonstrate their use for manufacturability verification is derived from the findings of a case study also detailed in this article. © IMechE 2012
