Expertise and the interpretation of computerized physiological data: implications for the design of computerized monitoring in neonatal intensive care
This paper presents the outcomes from a cognitive engineering project addressing the design problems of computerized monitoring in neonatal intensive care. Cognitive engineering is viewed, in this project, as a symbiosis between cognitive science and design practice. A range of methodologies has been used: interviews with neonatal staff, ward observations and experimental techniques. The results of these investigations are reported, focusing specifically on the differences between junior and senior physicians in their interpretation of monitored physiological data. It was found that the senior doctors made better use of the different knowledge sources available than the junior doctors. The senior doctors were able to identify more relevant physiological patterns and generated more and better inferences than did their junior colleagues. Expertise differences are discussed in the context of previous psychological research in medical expertise. Finally, the paper discusses the potential utility of these outcomes to inform the design of computerized decision support in neonatal intensive care
Swimming Efficiency of Bacterium Escherichia Coli
We use in vivo measurements of swimming bacteria in an optical trap to
determine fundamental properties of bacterial propulsion. In particular, we
determine the propulsion matrix, which relates the angular velocity of the
flagellum to the torques and forces propelling the bacterium. From the
propulsion matrix dynamical properties such as forces, torques, swimming speed
and power can be obtained from measurements of the angular velocity of the
motor. We find significant heterogeneities among different individuals even
though all bacteria started from a single colony. The propulsive efficiency,
defined as the ratio of the propulsive power output to the rotary power input
provided by the motors, is found to be 0.2%.Comment: 6 page
A Quillen model structure for Gray-categories
A Quillen model structure on the category Gray-Cat of Gray-categories is
described, for which the weak equivalences are the triequivalences. It is shown
to restrict to the full subcategory Gray-Gpd of Gray-groupoids. This is used to
provide a functorial and model-theoretic proof of the unpublished theorem of
Joyal and Tierney that Gray-groupoids model homotopy 3-types. The model
structure on Gray-Cat is conjectured to be Quillen equivalent to a model
structure on the category Tricat of tricategories and strict homomorphisms of

Benih kedelai [Glycine max (L) Merr] yang diuji adalah kedelai varietas Argomulyo yang diirradiasi sinar gamma dengan dosis 0 Gray,
50 Gray, 100 Gray, 150 Gray dan 200 Gray. Keragaman yang diperoleh dari setiap peubah amatan yang diperoleh pada generasi M1 dan
M2 menunjukkan bahwa perlakuan irradiasi dapat mempengaruhi pertumbuhan dan perkembangan tanaman secara kualitatif dan
kuantitatif, yang akhirnya akan mempengaruhi produksi tanaman. Variasi fenotipe pada tanaman kedelai generasi M2 tertinggi rata-rata
terjadi pada perlakuan 200 Gray. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa irradiasi sinar gamma pada dosis 200 Gray efektif menyebabkan
terjadinya keragaman genetik tanaman.

Gray categories with duals and their diagrams
The geometric and algebraic properties of Gray categories with duals are
investigated by means of a diagrammatic calculus. The diagrams are
three-dimensional stratifications of a cube, with regions, surfaces, lines and
vertices labelled by Gray category data. These can be viewed as a
generalisation of ribbon diagrams. The Gray categories present two types of
duals, which are extended to functors of strict tricategories with natural
isomorphisms, and correspond directly to symmetries of the diagrams. It is
shown that these functors can be strictified so that the symmetries of a cube
are realised exactly. A new condition on Gray categories with duals called the
spatial condition is defined. A class of diagrams for which the evaluation for
spatial Gray categories is invariant under homeomorphisms is exhibited. This
relation between the geometry of the diagrams and structures in the Gray
categories proves useful in computations and has potential applications in

Using GPS telemetry to validate least-cost modeling of gray squirrel ( Sciurus carolinensis) movement within a fragmented landscape
In Britain, the population of native red squirrels Sciurus vulgaris has suffered population declines and local extinctions. Interspecific resource competition and disease spread by the invasive gray squirrel Sciurus carolinensis are the main factors behind the decline. Gray squirrels have adapted to the British landscape so efficiently that they are widely distributed. Knowledge on how gray squirrels are using the landscape matrix and being able to predict their movements will aid management. This study is the first to use global positioning system (GPS) collars on wild gray squirrels to accurately record movements and land cover use within the landscape matrix. This data were used to validate Geographical Information System (GIS) least-cost model predictions of movements and provided much needed information on gray squirrel movement pathways and network use. Buffered least-cost paths and least-cost corridors provide predictions of the most probable movements through the landscape and are seen to perform better than the more expansive least-cost networks which include all possible movements. Applying the knowledge and methodologies gained to current gray squirrel expansion areas, such as Scotland and in Italy, will aid in the prediction of potential movement areas and therefore management of the invasive gray squirrel. Wilmington is situated on the divide of two major watersheds, the Cape Fear River and the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway. All surface waters in Wilmington drain to one of these two water bodies and are divided into two groups: tidal creeks and Cape Fear River tributaries. Cape Fear River tributaries drain directly to the Cape Fear River and comprise the western portion of Wilmington’s surface waters. Flagellar propulsion
In this JEB Classics paper, Sir James Gray and G. J. Hancock explained how spermatozoa are propelled by flagellar bending waves (Gray and Hancock, 1955). This paper was a lasting success because it provided an easy-to-understand solution to a complicated hydrodynamic problem, and because it provided a quantitative prediction of the swimming speed that was almost identical to the swimming speed measured in Gray's accompanying paper on the movement of sea urchin spermatozoa (Gray, 1955)
