Popovia johnrolandi n.sp., a new smaller agglutinated foraminifera from northern Venezuela: a biostratigraphic example of the second law of thermodynamics

    Get PDF
We describe a previously unrecognised species of Popovia, here named Popovia johnrolandi n.sp. from the Miocene of Eastern Falcon state in Venezuela. The internal complexity of this new species increased through the Serravalian from Zone N10 to N14. This apparent trend towards increasing internal complexity reflects increasing entropy through time, and is here interpreted as an evolutionary adaptation to life within an oxygen minimum zone

Prospect Analysis and Hydrocarbon Reservoir Volume Estimation in an Exploration Field, Shallow Offshore Depobelt, Western Niger Delta, Nigeria

    Get PDF
The daunting challenge in the exploration and production of oil and gas in the face of continual rise in the world’s energy consumption has long been how to economically recover bypassed reserves within existing assets. This research is focused on the analysis of prospects and volumetric estimation of the hydrocarbon reservoirs delineated within an exploratory field using 3D seismic data and suites of wireline logs. The prospectivity of the delineated reservoir was carried out using seismo-structural interpretation and formation evaluation towards the assessment of the prolific hydrocarbon occurrence within the field. The reservoirs have porosity (0.29–0.32) for H1, (0.20–0.31) for H2 and (0.30–0.40) for H3 and the average computed hydrocarbon saturation of (0.31–0.62) for H1, (0.16–0.52) for H2 and (0.64–0.73) for H3, hydrocarbon pore volume (HCPV) of 28,706.95, 33,081.2 and 45,731.49 barrels for H1, H2 and H3, respectively, while the estimated stock tank oil initially-in-place (STOIIP) range (136.8–140.73) MMSTB for H1, (36.77–489.64) MMSTB for H2 and (166.62–308.14) MMSTB for H3. The observed porosity and hydrocarbon saturation for the delineated reservoirs as well as the estimated hydrocarbon pore volume and storage total oil in place indicate that the reservoirs are highly prolific. The study has therefore contributed to the understanding of hydrocarbon resource potential within the study area

The correspondence belonging to the IGM's hi storical files and relevant to the History of Portuguese Archaeology, was studied. This correspondence was gathered for the first time as documental files by A. A. M. The other author, J. L. C., has made the analysis of each document and, using brief comments, integrated the quoted issues and their intervenients on the main scientific subjects thereonce debated. ln such issues, Carlos Ribeiro anel Nery Delgado held an important role, and kept correspondence with many societally and scientifically known men of that period, such as Baron de Baye, de Marsy, Barboza du Bocage, H. Howorth, H. Schliemann, Boucher de Perthes, E. Dupont, Casal is de Fondouce and Estácio da Veiga, amongst others. There are many documents related to the IX Session of the lnternational Congress of Antropology and Prehistorical Archaeology on 1880, held in Lisbon. Many correspondence from C. Ribeiro and Nery Delgado also presented attached documental pieces of the returned letters. We also integrally transcribe two autobiographic inedit documents from Carlos Ribeiro and Nery Delgado. We further emphasise the important work in archaeological research developed by th Second Porugueses Geological Comission (1869-1886) and by the Comission of Portuguese Geological Works (1886- 1892), both relevantly contributing to the so-called "Golden Age" of Portuguese Prehistorical Archaeolog

The only meeting held in Spain by the French Geological Society took place in Catalonia in the year 1898. Following a suggestion made by Dr. Gaudry which was communicated to Dr. Almera, the Catalonian members of the Society proposed an excursions program for the Barcelona area which was accepted by the bureau of the Society. The organisation was a personal success for Dr. Almera. From a scientific point of view, his geological work was shown on various sites, discussed and founded worthy of remark by the highest representatives of the European geology. Moreover, L.M. Vidal led up complementary excursions to Cardona salt mine, Olot volcanics, and Montsec mountains. The catalonian public had the opportunity to keep up to date with events through the writing of Bofill in the Diario de Barcelona. Finally, the first geological guide of Catalonia was issued in Paris (1900) and Madrid (1903). Other results of the meeting were the improvement in relations between Catalonian and French geologists, and the opening of new areas of geological research in Catalonia. Key words: History of science, 19th century, scientific societies, geology, Catalonia, Spain

A BAT–4 fúrásban a Bodai Agyagkő Formáció agyagkőmintáinak petrográfiai mikroszkópos vizsgálata során a vörös, agyagos–hematitos alapanyagban négyzet, négyágú csillag, illetve háromszög metszetű, uralkodóan pátos karbonát (kalcit vagy dolomit) egykristályokból álló kitöltéseket figyeltünk meg. Morfológiájuk alapján ezek a pszeudomorfózák korábbi kősó vázkristályok („hopper” halit, „pagoda” halit) utáni helyettesítésként értelmezhetők, amelyek az intenzív bepárlódás és a korai diagenetikus kősókiválás bizonyítékai a laza üledékben a sós iszaplapályon

SIR-A imagery in geologic studies of the Sierra Madre Oriental, northeastern Mexico. Part 1 (Regional stratigraphy): The use of morphostratigraphic units in remote sensing mapping

    Get PDF
SIR-A imaging was used in geological studies of sedimentary terrains in the Sierra Madre Oriental, northeastern Mexico. Geological features such as regional strike and dip, bedding, folding and faulting were readily detected on the image. The recognition of morphostructural units in the imagery, coupled with field verification, enabled geological mapping of the region at the scale of 1:250 000. Structural profiling lead to the elaboration of a morphostructural map allowing the recognition of an echelon folds and field trends which were used to postulate the ectonic setting of the region
