Exploring perceptions and attitudes towards teaching and learning manual technical drawing in a digital age
This paper examines the place of manual technical drawing in the 21st century by discussing the perceived value and relevance of teaching school students how to draw using traditional instruments, in a world of computer aided drafting (CAD). Views were obtained through an e-survey, questionnaires and structured interviews. The sample groups represent professional CAD users (e.g. engineers, architects); university lecturers; Technology Education teachers and student teachers; and school students taking Scottish Qualification Authority (SQA) Graphic Communication courses. An analysis of these personal views and attitudes indicates some common values between the various groups canvassed of what instruction in traditional manual technical drafting contributes towards learning. Themes emerge such as problem solving, visualisation, accuracy, co-ordination, use of standard conventions, personal discipline and artistry. In contrast to the assumptions of Prensky's thesis (2001a&b) of digital natives, the study reported in this paper indicate that the school students apparently appreciate the experience of traditional drafting. In conclusion, the paper illustrates the perceived value of such learning in terms of transferable skills, personal achievement and enjoyment
An Ontological Basis for Design Methods
This paper presents a view of design methods as process artefacts that can be represented using the function-behaviour-structure (FBS) ontology. This view allows identifying five fundamental approaches to methods: black-box, procedural, artefact-centric, formal and managerial approaches. They all describe method structure but emphasise different aspects of it. Capturing these differences addresses common terminological confusions relating to methods. The paper provides an overview of the use of the fundamental method approaches for different purposes in designing. In addition, the FBS ontology is used for developing a notion of prescriptiveness of design methods as an aggregate construct defined along four dimensions: certainty, granularity, flexibility and authority. The work presented in this paper provides an ontological basis for describing, understanding and managing design methods throughout their life cycle.

Fourier spectra of measures associated with algorithmically random Brownian motion
In this paper we study the behaviour at infinity of the Fourier transform of
Radon measures supported by the images of fractal sets under an algorithmically
random Brownian motion. We show that, under some computability conditions on
these sets, the Fourier transform of the associated measures have, relative to
the Hausdorff dimensions of these sets, optimal asymptotic decay at infinity.
The argument relies heavily on a direct characterisation, due to Asarin and
Pokrovskii, of algorithmically random Brownian motion in terms of the prefix
free Kolmogorov complexity of finite binary sequences. The study also
necessitates a closer look at the potential theory over fractals from a

The LAB@FUTURE Project - Moving Towards the Future of E-Learning
This paper presents Lab@Future, an advanced e-learning platform that uses novel Information and Communication Technologies to support and expand laboratory teaching practices. For this purpose, Lab@Future uses real and computer-generated objects that are interfaced using mechatronic systems, augmented reality, mobile technologies and 3D multi user environments. The main aim is to develop and demonstrate technological support for practical experiments in the following focused subjects namely: Fluid Dynamics - Science subject in Germany, Geometry - Mathematics subject in Austria, History and Environmental Awareness – Arts and Humanities subjects in Greece and Slovenia. In order to pedagogically enhance the design and functional aspects of this e-learning technology, we are investigating the dialogical operationalisation of learning theories so as to leverage our understanding of teaching and learning practices in the targeted context of deployment
Lean construction, building information modelling and sustainability
This paper investigates the mutual relations of three current drivers of construction:
lean construction, building information modelling and sustainability. These drivers
are based on infrequently occurring changes, only incidentally simultaneous, in their
respective domains. It is contended that the drivers are mutually supportive and thus
synergistic. They are aligned in the sense that all require, promote or enable
collaboration. It is argued that these three drivers should be implemented in a unified
manner for rapid and robust improvements in construction industry performance and
the quality of the constructed facilities and their benefits for stakeholders and wider
society
