The Metaverse: Survey, Trends, Novel Pipeline Ecosystem & Future Directions

The Metaverse offers a second world beyond reality, where boundaries are non-existent, and possibilities are endless through engagement and immersive experiences using the virtual reality (VR) technology. Many disciplines can benefit from the advancement of the Metaverse when accurately developed, including the fields of technology, gaming, education, art, and culture. Nevertheless, developing the Metaverse environment to its full potential is an ambiguous task that needs proper guidance and directions. Existing surveys on the Metaverse focus only on a specific aspect and discipline of the Metaverse and lack a holistic view of the entire process. To this end, a more holistic, multi-disciplinary, in-depth, and academic and industry-oriented review is required to provide a thorough study of the Metaverse development pipeline. To address these issues, we present in this survey a novel multi-layered pipeline ecosystem composed of (1) the Metaverse computing, networking, communications and hardware infrastructure, (2) environment digitization, and (3) user interactions. For every layer, we discuss the components that detail the steps of its development. Also, for each of these components, we examine the impact of a set of enabling technologies and empowering domains (e.g., Artificial Intelligence, Security & Privacy, Blockchain, Business, Ethics, and Social) on its advancement. In addition, we explain the importance of these technologies to support decentralization, interoperability, user experiences, interactions, and monetization. Our presented study highlights the existing challenges for each component, followed by research directions and potential solutions. To the best of our knowledge, this survey is the most comprehensive and allows users, scholars, and entrepreneurs to get an in-depth understanding of the Metaverse ecosystem to find their opportunities and potentials for contribution

Urban supply networks are facing increasing demands and challenges and thus constitute a relevant field for research and practical development. Supply chain management holds enormous potential and relevance for society and everyday life as the flow of goods and information are important economic functions. Being a heterogeneous field, the literature base of supply chain management research is difficult to manage and navigate. Disruptive digital technologies and the implementation of cross-network information analysis and sharing drive the need for new organisational and technological approaches. Practical issues are manifold and include mega trends such as digital transformation, urbanisation, and environmental awareness. A promising approach to solving these problems is the realisation of smart and collaborative supply networks. The growth of artificial intelligence applications in recent years has led to a wide range of applications in a variety of domains. However, the potential of artificial intelligence utilisation in supply chain management has not yet been fully exploited. Similarly, value creation increasingly takes place in networked value creation cycles that have become continuously more collaborative, complex, and dynamic as interactions in business processes involving information technologies have become more intense. Following a design science research approach this cumulative thesis comprises the development and discussion of four artefacts for the analysis and advancement of smart and collaborative urban supply networks. This thesis aims to highlight the potential of artificial intelligence-based supply networks, to advance data-driven inter-organisational collaboration, and to improve last mile supply network sustainability. Based on thorough machine learning and systematic literature reviews, reference and system dynamics modelling, simulation, and qualitative empirical research, the artefacts provide a valuable contribution to research and practice

Corporate Social Responsibility: the institutionalization of ESG

Understanding the impact of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) on firm performance as it relates to industries reliant on technological innovation is a complex and perpetually evolving challenge. To thoroughly investigate this topic, this dissertation will adopt an economics-based structure to address three primary hypotheses. This structure allows for each hypothesis to essentially be a standalone empirical paper, unified by an overall analysis of the nature of impact that ESG has on firm performance. The first hypothesis explores the evolution of CSR to the modern quantified iteration of ESG has led to the institutionalization and standardization of the CSR concept. The second hypothesis fills gaps in existing literature testing the relationship between firm performance and ESG by finding that the relationship is significantly positive in long-term, strategic metrics (ROA and ROIC) and that there is no correlation in short-term metrics (ROE and ROS). Finally, the third hypothesis states that if a firm has a long-term strategic ESG plan, as proxied by the publication of CSR reports, then it is more resilience to damage from controversies. This is supported by the finding that pro-ESG firms consistently fared better than their counterparts in both financial and ESG performance, even in the event of a controversy. However, firms with consistent reporting are also held to a higher standard than their nonreporting peers, suggesting a higher risk and higher reward dynamic. These findings support the theory of good management, in that long-term strategic planning is both immediately economically beneficial and serves as a means of risk management and social impact mitigation. Overall, this contributes to the literature by fillings gaps in the nature of impact that ESG has on firm performance, particularly from a management perspective

A Hierarchical Game-Theoretic Decision-Making for Cooperative Multi-Agent Systems Under the Presence of Adversarial Agents

Underlying relationships among Multi-Agent Systems (MAS) in hazardous scenarios can be represented as Game-theoretic models. This paper proposes a new hierarchical network-based model called Game-theoretic Utility Tree (GUT), which decomposes high-level strategies into executable low-level actions for cooperative MAS decisions. It combines with a new payoff measure based on agent needs for real-time strategy games. We present an Explore game domain, where we measure the performance of MAS achieving tasks from the perspective of balancing the success probability and system costs. We evaluate the GUT approach against state-of-the-art methods that greedily rely on rewards of the composite actions. Conclusive results on extensive numerical simulations indicate that GUT can organize more complex relationships among MAS cooperation, helping the group achieve challenging tasks with lower costs and higher winning rates. Furthermore, we demonstrated the applicability of the GUT using the simulator-hardware testbed - Robotarium. The performances verified the effectiveness of the GUT in the real robot application and validated that the GUT could effectively organize MAS cooperation strategies, helping the group with fewer advantages achieve higher performance.Comment: This paper is accepted by the ACM Symposium on Applied Computing (SAC) 2023 Technical Track on Intelligent Robotics and Multi-Agent Systems (IRMAS

Seer: Language Instructed Video Prediction with Latent Diffusion Models

Imagining the future trajectory is the key for robots to make sound planning and successfully reach their goals. Therefore, text-conditioned video prediction (TVP) is an essential task to facilitate general robot policy learning, i.e., predicting future video frames with a given language instruction and reference frames. It is a highly challenging task to ground task-level goals specified by instructions and high-fidelity frames together, requiring large-scale data and computation. To tackle this task and empower robots with the ability to foresee the future, we propose a sample and computation-efficient model, named \textbf{Seer}, by inflating the pretrained text-to-image (T2I) stable diffusion models along the temporal axis. We inflate the denoising U-Net and language conditioning model with two novel techniques, Autoregressive Spatial-Temporal Attention and Frame Sequential Text Decomposer, to propagate the rich prior knowledge in the pretrained T2I models across the frames. With the well-designed architecture, Seer makes it possible to generate high-fidelity, coherent, and instruction-aligned video frames by fine-tuning a few layers on a small amount of data. The experimental results on Something Something V2 (SSv2) and Bridgedata datasets demonstrate our superior video prediction performance with around 210-hour training on 4 RTX 3090 GPUs: decreasing the FVD of the current SOTA model from 290 to 200 on SSv2 and achieving at least 70\% preference in the human evaluation.Comment: 17 pages, 15 figure

The place where curses are manufactured : four poets of the Vietnam War

    Get PDF
The Vietnam War was unique among American wars. To pinpoint its uniqueness, it was necessary to look for a non-American voice that would enable me to articulate its distinctiveness and explore the American character as observed by an Asian. Takeshi Kaiko proved to be most helpful. From his novel, Into a Black Sun, I was able to establish a working pair of 'bookends' from which to approach the poetry of Walter McDonald, Bruce Weigl, Basil T. Paquet and Steve Mason. Chapter One is devoted to those seemingly mismatched 'bookends,' Walt Whitman and General William C. Westmoreland, and their respective anthropocentric and technocentric visions of progress and the peculiarly American concept of the "open road" as they manifest themselves in Vietnam. In Chapter, Two, I analyze the war poems of Walter McDonald. As a pilot, writing primarily about flying, his poetry manifests General Westmoreland's technocentric vision of the 'road' as determined by and manifest through technology. Chapter Three focuses on the poems of Bruce Weigl. The poems analyzed portray the literal and metaphorical descent from the technocentric, 'numbed' distance of aerial warfare to the world of ground warfare, and the initiation of a 'fucking new guy,' who discovers the contours of the self's interior through a set of experiences that lead from from aerial insertion into the jungle to the degradation of burning human feces. Chapter Four, devoted to the thirteen poems of Basil T. Paquet, focuses on the continuation of the descent begun in Chapter Two. In his capacity as a medic, Paquet's entire body of poems details his quotidian tasks which entail tending the maimed, the mortally wounded and the dead. The final chapter deals with Steve Mason's JohnnY's Song, and his depiction of the plight of Vietnam veterans back in "The World" who are still trapped inside the interior landscape of their individual "ghettoes" of the soul created by their war-time experiences

The determinants of value addition: a crtitical analysis of global software engineering industry in Sri Lanka

    Get PDF
It was evident through the literature that the perceived value delivery of the global software engineering industry is low due to various facts. Therefore, this research concerns global software product companies in Sri Lanka to explore the software engineering methods and practices in increasing the value addition. The overall aim of the study is to identify the key determinants for value addition in the global software engineering industry and critically evaluate the impact of them for the software product companies to help maximise the value addition to ultimately assure the sustainability of the industry. An exploratory research approach was used initially since findings would emerge while the study unfolds. Mixed method was employed as the literature itself was inadequate to investigate the problem effectively to formulate the research framework. Twenty-three face-to-face online interviews were conducted with the subject matter experts covering all the disciplines from the targeted organisations which was combined with the literature findings as well as the outcomes of the market research outcomes conducted by both government and nongovernment institutes. Data from the interviews were analysed using NVivo 12. The findings of the existing literature were verified through the exploratory study and the outcomes were used to formulate the questionnaire for the public survey. 371 responses were considered after cleansing the total responses received for the data analysis through SPSS 21 with alpha level 0.05. Internal consistency test was done before the descriptive analysis. After assuring the reliability of the dataset, the correlation test, multiple regression test and analysis of variance (ANOVA) test were carried out to fulfil the requirements of meeting the research objectives. Five determinants for value addition were identified along with the key themes for each area. They are staffing, delivery process, use of tools, governance, and technology infrastructure. The cross-functional and self-organised teams built around the value streams, employing a properly interconnected software delivery process with the right governance in the delivery pipelines, selection of tools and providing the right infrastructure increases the value delivery. Moreover, the constraints for value addition are poor interconnection in the internal processes, rigid functional hierarchies, inaccurate selections and uses of tools, inflexible team arrangements and inadequate focus for the technology infrastructure. The findings add to the existing body of knowledge on increasing the value addition by employing effective processes, practices and tools and the impacts of inaccurate applications the same in the global software engineering industry

An investigation of the relationship between perioperative characteristics and perioperative anaesthesia on the postoperative systemic inflammatory response and clinical outcome in patients undergoing surgery for colorectal cancer

    Get PDF
In UK, colorectal cancer (CRC) is the fourth most common cancer and the second most common cause of cancer death. Until now, surgical resection remains the cornerstone for the management of CRC in all stages, however, stress response elicit from surgery may cause different changes through multiple systems in human body including neural, endocrine, metabolic, inflammatory, and immunological changes. In addition, other perioperative factors such as volatile anaesthetic and opioids may induce the immunosuppression. There is a proportional correlation between the stress response and the magnitude of the inflammatory immune response, invasiveness, and duration of surgery. The pre-operative and post-operative status of patients are important when considering the prognosis. The systemic inflammatory response (SIR) has been recognised to correlate with tumour progression and the prognosis of CRC. An exaggerated postoperative SIR is associated with postoperative infective complications and poor survival. Several predictive markers of the SIR have been used, such as the neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), serum C-reactive protein (CRP) level, and Glasgow prognostic score (GPS). Some evidence reported that general anaesthesia (GA) combined with regional anaesthesia (RA) are better than the single use of general anaesthesia in reducing the post-operative immuno-suppression in some degrees. Furthermore, the peri-operative inflammatory process may be affected by the choice of anaesthetic technique, with propofol reported to have anti-inflammatory effect by targeting neutrophil activity. Up to now, there is insufficient evidence to recommend any specific anaesthetic or analgesic technique for patients undergoing surgery for tumour resection based on inflammatory response, recurrence, and metastasis. The work presented in this thesis further examines the relationship between the perioperative characteristics, perioperative anaesthesia, and the postoperative systemic inflammatory response following surgery for colorectal cancer. Several preoperative medications along with anaesthesia might influence the postoperative systemic inflammatory response but the question is whether the post-operative systemic inflammatory response affected by the administration of different types of anaesthesia or not following surgery for colorectal cancer. Chapter 1 discusses the epidemiology, aetiology, carcinogenesis, risk factors of colorectal cancer, pro-carcinogenic factors, anti-carcinogenic agents, inflammation and cancer, the post-operative systemic inflammatory response, tumour staging, screening, and diagnosis of colorectal cancer. Chapter 2 discusses the treatment of colorectal cancer. Chapter 3 discusses different anaesthetic techniques and agents. Chapter 4 provides summary and aims of the thesis. Chapter 5 represents findings from a systematic review and meta-analysis about the effect of anaesthesia on the postoperative systemic inflammatory response in patients undergoing surgery. The results conclude that there was some evidence that anaesthetic regimens may reduce the magnitude of the post-operative SIR. However, the studies identified in this systematic review were heterogeneous and generally of low quality. Chapter 6 represents a retrospective cohort study about the relationship between anaesthetic technique, clinicopathological characteristics and the magnitude of the postoperative systemic inflammatory response in patients undergoing elective surgery for colon cancer. The results show that the type of anaesthesia varied over time and appears to influence the magnitude of the postoperative SIR on post-operative day 2 for those patients who underwent for open surgery but not laparoscopic surgery. Chapter 7 represents a prospective cohort study about the effect of anaesthesia on the magnitude of the postoperative systemic inflammatory response in patients undergoing elective surgery for colorectal cancer in the context of an enhanced recovery pathway. The results show that there was a modest but an independent association between regional anaesthesia (RA) and a lower magnitude of the postoperative SIR. Chapter 8 represents the relationship between pre-operative medications, the type of anaesthesia and post-operative sequelae in patients undergoing surgery for colorectal cancer. The results show that there was no association between the preoperative administration of aspirin, statins and ACE inhibitors and anaesthesia. Chapter 9 represents the relationship between nutritional status, anaesthetic approach, and peri-operative characteristics of patients undergoing surgery for colorectal cancer. The results show that there was no significant association between measures of nutritional status and anaesthetic approach. Chapter 10 represents the relationship between opioid administration, type of anaesthesia and clinicopathological characteristics in patients undergoing surgery for colorectal cancer. The results show that opioid administration was independently associated with both anaesthetic and operative factors. Chapter 11 represents the main findings of the thesis and some recommendation for a future work
