From Words, through Rhetoric, to Knowledge Needs
This paper presents one aspect of a research project investigating ways in which computer users build up their knowledge of a specialised domain (namely, computer security) by accessing relevant texts such as computer manuals. The research was concerned with the formulation of knowledge needs, and the aim was to map users’ needs, together with the terminology which helps to express those needs, onto the specialised language of computer manuals, with a view to designing better retrieval tools (e.g. indexes) and improving learning from texts
