    Shipboard Crisis Management: A Case Study.

    The loss of the "Green Lily" in 1997 is used as a case study to highlight the characteristics of escalating crises. As in similar safety critical industries, these situations are unpredictable events that may require co-ordinated but flexible and creative responses from individuals and teams working in stressful conditions. Fundamental skill requirements for crisis management are situational awareness and decision making. This paper reviews the naturalistic decision making (NDM) model for insights into the nature of these skills and considers the optimal training regimes to cultivate them. The paper concludes with a review of the issues regarding the assessment of crisis management skills and current research into the determination of behavioural markers for measuring competence

    The development of a rich multimedia training environment for crisis management: using emotional affect to enhance learning

    PANDORA is an EU FP7-funded project developing a novel training and learning environment for Gold Commanders, individuals who carry executive responsibility for the services and facilities identified as strategically critical e.g. Police, Fire, in crisis management strategic planning situations. A key part of the work for this project is considering the emotional and behavioural state of the trainees, and the creation of more realistic, and thereby stressful, representations of multimedia information to impact on the decision-making of those trainees. Existing training models are predominantly paper-based, table-top exercises, which require an exercise of imagination on the part of the trainees to consider not only the various aspects of a crisis situation but also the impacts of interventions, and remediating actions in the event of the failure of an intervention. However, existing computing models and tools are focused on supporting tactical and operational activities in crisis management, not strategic. Therefore, the PANDORA system will provide a rich multimedia information environment, to provide trainees with the detailed information they require to develop strategic plans to deal with a crisis scenario, and will then provide information on the impacts of the implementation of those plans and provide the opportunity for the trainees to revise and remediate those plans. Since this activity is invariably multi-agency, the training environment must support group-based strategic planning activities and trainees will occupy specific roles within the crisis scenario. The system will also provide a range of non-playing characters (NPC) representing domain experts, high-level controllers (e.g. politicians, ministers), low-level controllers (tactical and operational commanders), and missing trainee roles, to ensure a fully populated scenario can be realised in each instantiation. Within the environment, the emotional and behavioural state of the trainees will be monitored, and interventions, in the form of environmental information controls and mechanisms impacting on the stress levels and decisionmaking capabilities of the trainees, will be used to personalise the training environment. This approach enables a richer and more realistic representation of the crisis scenario to be enacted, leading to better strategic plans and providing trainees with structured feedback on their performance under stress

    Synopsis of an engineering solution for a painful problem Phantom Limb Pain

    This paper is synopsis of a recently proposed solution for treating patients who suffer from Phantom Limb Pain (PLP). The underpinning approach of this research and development project is based on an extension of “mirror box” therapy which has had some promising results in pain reduction. An outline of an immersive individually tailored environment giving the patient a virtually realised limb presence, as a means to pain reduction is provided. The virtual 3D holographic environment is meant to produce immersive, engaging and creative environments and tasks to encourage and maintain patients’ interest, an important aspect in two of the more challenging populations under consideration (over-60s and war veterans). The system is hoped to reduce PLP by more than 3 points on an 11 point Visual Analog Scale (VAS), when a score less than 3 could be attributed to distraction alone

    Effects of Anticipation in Individually Motivated Behaviour on Control and Survival in a Multi-Agent Scenario with Resource Constraints

Here we assess both skills when multiple agents compete for a scarce resource. Drawing on insights from psychology, microsociology and control theory, we examine how different assumptions about the behaviour of an agent’s peers in the anticipation process affect subjective control and survival strategies. To quantify control and drive behaviour, we use the recently developed information-theoretic quantity of empowerment with the principle of empowerment maximization. In two experiments involving extensive simulations, we show that agents develop risk-seeking, risk-averse and mixed strategies, which correspond to greedy, parsimonious and mixed behaviour. Although the principle of empowerment maximization is highly generic, the emerging strategies are consistent with what one would expect from rational individuals with dedicated utility models.     Guidelines for assessing pedestrian evacuation software applications

    This paper serves to clearly identify and explain criteria to consider when evaluating the suitability of a pedestrian evacuation software application to assess the evacuation process of a building. Guidelines in the form of nine topic areas identify different modelling approaches adopted, as well as features / functionality provided by applications designed specifically for simulating the egress of pedestrians from inside a building. The paper concludes with a synopsis of these guidelines, identifying key questions (by topic area) to found an evaluation

    The training needs of industrial foremen : a thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Psychology at Massey University

    This thesis reports the results of three interrelated studies relevant to the work and training of foremen. Training programmes for foremen which are based on traditional leadership research have not resulted in changes to objective performance outcomes. A review of the literature on observation studies of foreman's work suggested a Model of effective foreman behaviour. This model was tested in Study I, using data obtained from a continuous observation record of the work behaviours of nine foremen in one New Zealand plant. Correlations between work behaviours and four measures of performance outcome - productivity, turnover, absenteeism and accident rate - failed to provide support for the model. Two multidimensional scaling solutions were constructed to discover the underlying dimensions of behaviour. These also failed to correlate significantly with any of the performance criteria. It was concluded that no one model of effective behaviour could be prescribed for all foremen as the foremen's behaviour was largely under the control of the production system. It was also concluded that levels of performance outcomes were under the control of the production system, rather than under the control of the foremen's behaviour. However the study did identify one critical aspect of all foremen's jobs,-the Pacing Factor, which was simulated with an in-basket exercise in Study II. The simulation and a training exercise were pilot tested with thirty five trainees from supervisory courses. A three-group experimental design failed to indicate significant improvements to performance following a short training session, but post-hoc validity for the simulation was provided by one group of experienced trainees scoring significantly higher than the other groups. In a third study, five of the foremen from Study I completed the in-basket exercise. These foremen rated it as a realistic simulation of their jobs and their mean score was higher than that for the less experienced supervisory trainees. Ideas for the future development of the in-basket exercise and its use in training are outlined
