Downwash-Aware Trajectory Planning for Large Quadrotor Teams
We describe a method for formation-change trajectory planning for large
quadrotor teams in obstacle-rich environments. Our method decomposes the
planning problem into two stages: a discrete planner operating on a graph
representation of the workspace, and a continuous refinement that converts the
non-smooth graph plan into a set of C^k-continuous trajectories, locally
optimizing an integral-squared-derivative cost. We account for the downwash
effect, allowing safe flight in dense formations. We demonstrate the
computational efficiency in simulation with up to 200 robots and the physical
plausibility with an experiment with 32 nano-quadrotors. Our approach can
compute safe and smooth trajectories for hundreds of quadrotors in dense
environments with obstacles in a few minutes.Comment: 8 page
Route Swarm: Wireless Network Optimization through Mobility
In this paper, we demonstrate a novel hybrid architecture for coordinating
networked robots in sensing and information routing applications. The proposed
INformation and Sensing driven PhysIcally REconfigurable robotic network
(INSPIRE), consists of a Physical Control Plane (PCP) which commands agent
position, and an Information Control Plane (ICP) which regulates information
flow towards communication/sensing objectives. We describe an instantiation
where a mobile robotic network is dynamically reconfigured to ensure high
quality routes between static wireless nodes, which act as source/destination
pairs for information flow. The ICP commands the robots towards evenly
distributed inter-flow allocations, with intra-flow configurations that
maximize route quality. The PCP then guides the robots via potential-based
control to reconfigure according to ICP commands. This formulation, deemed
Route Swarm, decouples information flow and physical control, generating a
feedback between routing and sensing needs and robotic configuration. We
demonstrate our propositions through simulation under a realistic wireless

A distributed optimization framework for localization and formation control: applications to vision-based measurements
Multiagent systems have been a major area of research for the last 15 years. This interest has been motivated by tasks that can be executed more rapidly in a collaborative manner or that are nearly impossible to carry out otherwise. To be effective, the agents need to have the notion of a common goal shared by the entire network (for instance, a desired formation) and individual control laws to realize the goal. The common goal is typically centralized, in the sense that it involves the state of all the agents at the same time. On the other hand, it is often desirable to have individual control laws that are distributed, in the sense that the desired action of an agent depends only on the measurements and states available at the node and at a small number of neighbors. This is an attractive quality because it implies an overall system that is modular and intrinsically more robust to communication delays and node failures
Distributed Collision-Free Motion Coordination on a Sphere: A Conic Control Barrier Function Approach
This letter studies a distributed collision avoidance control problem for a group of rigid bodies on a sphere. A rigid body network, consisting of multiple rigid bodies constrained to a spherical surface and an interconnection topology, is first formulated. In this formulation, it is shown that motion coordination on a sphere is equivalent to attitude coordination on the 3-dimensional Special Orthogonal group. Then, an angle-based control barrier function that can handle a geodesic distance constraint on a spherical surface is presented. The proposed control barrier function is then extended to a relative motion case and applied to a collision avoidance problem for a rigid body network operating on a sphere. Each rigid body chooses its control input by solving a distributed optimization problem to achieve a nominal distributed motion coordination strategy while satisfying constraints for collision avoidance.
