    Scattering amplitudes of massive spin-2 Kaluza-Klein states grow only as O(s)

    We present the results of the first complete calculation of the tree-level 222\to 2 high-energy scattering amplitudes of the longitudinal modes of massive spin-2 Kaluza-Klein states, both in the case where the internal space is a torus and in the Randall-Sundrum model where the internal space has constant negative curvature. While individual contributions to this amplitude grow as O(s5{\cal O}(s^5), we demonstrate explicitly that intricate cancellations occur between different contributions, reducing the growth to O(s){\cal O}(s), a slower rate of growth than previously argued in the literature. These cancellations require subtle relationships between the masses of the Kaluza-Klein states and their interactions, and reflect the underlying higher-dimensional diffeomorphism invariance. Our results provide fresh perspective on the range of validity of (effective) field theories involving massive spin-2 KK particles, with significant implications for the theory and phenomenology of these states

    Sum rules for massive spin-2 Kaluza-Klein elastic scattering amplitudes

    It has recently been shown explicitly that the high-energy scattering amplitude of the longitudinal modes of massive spin-2 Kaluza Klein states in compactified 5-dimensional gravity, which would naively grow like O(s^5), grow only like O(s). Since the individual contributions to these amplitudes do grow like O(s^5), the required cancellations between these individual contributions result from intricate relationships between the masses of these states and their couplings. Here we report the explicit form of these sum-rule relationships which ensure the necessary cancellations for elastic scattering of spin-2 Kaluza Klein states in a Randall-Sundrum model. We consider an Anti-de-Sitter space of arbitrary curvature, including the special case of a toroidal compactification in which the curvature vanishes. The sum rules demonstrate that the cancellations at O(s^5) and O(s^4) are generic for a compact extra dimension, and arise from the Sturm-Liouville structure of the eigenmode system in the internal space. Separately, the sum rules at O(s^3) and O(s^2) illustrate the essential role of the radion mode of the extra-dimensional metric, which is the dynamical mode related to the size of the internal space

    The role of recombinant epidermal growth factor and serotonin in the stimulation of tumor growth in a SCCHN xenograft model

    One challenge of squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck (SCCHN) chemotherapy is a small percentage of tumor cells that arrest in the G0 phase of the cell cycle and are thus not affected by chemotherapy. This could be one reason for tumor recurrence at a later date. The recruitment of these G0-arresting cells into the active cell cycle and thus, proliferation, may increase the efficacy of chemotherapeutic agents. The aim of this study was to investigate whether stimulation with recombinant epidermal growth factor (EGF) or serotonin leads to an increased tumor cell proliferation in xenografts. Detroit 562 cells were injected into NMRI-Foxn1nu mice. Treatment was performed with 15 µg murine or human EGF, or 200 µg serotonin. The control mice were treated with Lactated Ringer's solution (5 mice/group). Tumor size was measured on days 4, 8 and 12 after tumor cell injection. The EGF stimulated mice showed a significantly higher tumor growth compared to the serotonin-stimulated mice and the untreated controls. In the present study, we show that it is possible to stimulate tumor cells in xenografts by EGF and thus, enhance cell proliferation, resulting in a higher tumor growth compared to the untreated control group. In our future investigations, we plan to include a higher number of mice, an adjustment of the EGF dosage and cell subanalysis, considering the heterogeneity of SCCHN tumors

    An analysis o f articles about Sweden which have appeared in the Polish press from 1989 to 1999 makes it possible to distinguish the most frequent subjects chosen by Polish journalists. These subjects include the unsolved case of the assassination of Olof Palme, the drawbacks of the Swedish welfare state, the controversies connected with Swedish neutrality, the discussions on how far equality can go and the problems of a multicultural country; as well as Swedish peculiarities such as alcohol policy, liberal morals, the position of the Church in a secularized society and the attachment to the monarchy. This article covers several examples o f these most popular topics. It also examines the way in which they have been presented, with regard to the traditional perception of Sweden by Poles as well as to the sense of Polish national identity noticeable in the journalists’ comments. The problems connected with these issues are discussed in greater detail in the author’s doctoral thesis in the chapter which deals with the perception of Sweden in Poland

    Evaluating Forest Growth Models

    Effective model evaluation is not a single, simple procedure, but comprises several interrelated steps that cannot be separated from each other or from the purpose and process of model construction. We draw attention to several statistical and graphical procedures that may assist in model calibration and evaluation, with special emphasis on those useful in forest growth modelling. We propose a five-step framework to examine logic and bio-logic, statistical properties, characteristics of errors, residuals, and sensitivity analyses. Empirical evaluations may be made both with data used in fitting the model, and with additional data not previously used. We emphasize that the validity of conclusions drawn from all these assessments depends on the validity of assumptions underlying both the model and the evaluation. These principles should be kept in mind throughout model construction and evaluation

    The Silvics of Some East European and Siberian Boreal Forest Tree Species

    In recent years, the boreal forest has received increased scientific attention in light of projected climatic warming to boreal regions from increased concentrations of atmospheric carbon dioxide. The ecological consequences of such a warming could be significant. However, before the consequences of climatic change can be properly investigated, the ecology of boreal forest tree species must be adequately understood. Though the life-histories of many North American boreal forest tree species are well known, little comparable information has been compiled in English for the major boreal forest tree species of the Soviet Union. In this paper, we present a preliminary description of the silvics of seven of these species -- their ranges, optimum climatic and soil conditions, regeneration characteristics, tree growth features, responses to suboptimal site conditions, and reaction to fire. We hope that this information will provide a useful data base for use in modeling the ecology of these species
