Vocabulary Games for the Beginner Interpreter Classroom

According to the (American) National Association of Judiciary Interpreters and Translators (NAJIT) and many experts in the field of court and legal interpretation, every court interpreter should strive for an ample and extensive vocabulary in his or her working languages. Although some more traditional vocabulary activities such as fill-in-the-blank exercises, crosswords, and word searches may aid prospective and practicing court interpreters reach this goal, there are some new approaches to language teaching that make this daunting task more entertaining and engaging. Where Angels Fear to Trade:The Role of Religion in Household Finance

Although the relationship between religion and economic development on the macro-level has been investigated, it is less clear how religious background influences economic attitudes and financial decision-making on the level of the individual or household, the micro-level. We use panel data from the extensive DNB Household Survey, covering the period from 1995 to 2008, to investigate whether - and through which channel - religious denomination affects household finance in the Netherlands. We find evidence that, in general, religious households care more about saving, are more risk-averse, consider themselves more trusting, have a more external locus of control, and have a stronger request motive. Furthermore, Catholics and Protestants have longer planning horizons, and Protestants and Evangelicals seem to have a greater sense of individual financial responsibility. Most of these factors matter for household financial decision-making, albeit to differing degrees. Using our religion variables as instruments for economic attitudes (and controlling for demographic and background risk characteristics), we demonstrate that the above-mentioned differences in economic beliefs and preferences explain the higher propensity to save by religious households in general and the lower investments in risky assets by Catholic households.

Combining interactive multiple goal linear programming with an inter-stakeholder communication matrix to generate land use options

An Interactive Multiple Goal Linear Programming (IMGLP) model is developed that considers objectives of multiple stakeholders, i.e. different farmer groups, district agricultural officers and agricultural scientists for agricultural land use analysis. The analysis focuses on crop selection; considering irrigated and non-irrigated crops such as rice, sugarcane, sorghum, cotton, millet, pulses and groundnut. Interests of the most important stakeholders, farmers, policy makers and water users association are investigated. Important objectives of the farmers are increased income and retaining paddy area; of the policy makers (Agricultural Department) increased farmers’ income, maintaining rural employment, improve water-use efficiency, reduce fertiliser and biocide use and discourage farmers from cultivating marginal lands; of the water users association optimising water use. Scenarios have been constructed by combining objectives and constraints. A Stakeholder Communication Matrix (SCM) indicating the level of communication and information flow among stakeholders in the district was generated after a Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA). Results of the scenarios generated with the IMGLP model were compared with the matrix. The relevance of analysing the results of the scenarios generated with the IMGLP model in the context of the SCM is illustrated for a sample set of scenarios. Scenario 1 (S1), where both the paddy area and the agricultural area are retained at the current level, is preferred by the farmers. However, the Agricultural Department would identify more easily with S10 in which the paddy area is reduced by 50% and the agricultural area by 20%, in accordance with the policy of limiting the area of high water-demanding crops and dissuading farmers from cultivating marginal lands, while the water users association would prefer S12, where water use is minimised by expanding the area of crops that are relatively less water-demanding. Income in S12 is 22% lower than in S1, while water use is 36% lower, and there is a significant reduction in biocide use. The conflict between S1 and S10 is compounded by the fact that communication between small-scale farmers and the Agricultural Department is relatively weak. Analysing the scenarios in the context of the SCM is useful to gain insight into the interactions among stakeholders in the system and take curative measures if required for improved communication. While the IMGLP model considers the bio-economics of the land use system, the SCM describes its social aspects, which may be critical for successful implementation of the IMGLP model

Reading the Juggler of Notre Dame

In this two-part anthology, Jan M. Ziolkowski builds on themes uncovered in his earlier The Juggler of Notre Dame and the Medievalizing of Modernity. Here he focuses particularly on the performing arts. Part one contextualises Our Lady’s Tumbler, a French poem of the late 1230s, by comparing it with episodes in the Bible and miracles in a wide variety of medieval European sources. Searching Cell Phones After Arrest: Exceptions to the Warrant and Probable Cause Requirements

Police officers lawfully arrest a suspect, search him, and seize his cell phone. Sometime later, without first getting a search warrant, an officer answers an incoming call, reads an incoming text, or examines the phone’s memory, call log, prior text messages, photographs, or Internet access records. As a result, the police acquire information that leads to additional evidence concerning the arrest crime, or a totally different and unrelated crime. Prior to trial, the defendant moves to suppress the evidence. The prosecutor argues that the officer’s action was justified by exigent circumstances, constituted a lawful search incident to the arrest, or both. Part I of this Article sets out the general rules governing searches and seizures by the police. Part II examines the exigent circumstances doctrine and its application to cell phone searches. It concludes that, properly construed, that doctrine can be applied to cell phone searches without excessive invasions of privacy. Part III examines the search incident to arrest doctrine, criticizes the courts that have taken either too permissive or too restrictive an approach to that doctrine’s application to cell phone searches, and proposes an approach that strikes an appropriate balance between the purposes underlying the doctrine and respect for the quantity and kinds of information that the typical cell phone contains
