    In the wake : postcolonial migrations from the Horn of Africa

    Abu Bakr Khaal’s African Titanics (written in Arabic) and Jonny Steinberg’s A Man of Good Hope (written in English) track diasporic movements from the former Italian colonies of Eritrea and Somalia. Focusing on mobility as well as memory, both books trace complicated and unpredictable patterns of forced displacement and precarious settlement. African Titanics charts the journey from Eritrea to the shores of the Mediterranean and the sea crossing to Europe, while A Man of Good Hope follows the movement overland from Somalia to South Africa. Both texts delineate communities networked across national borders and propose an alternative geography formed by cultural commonality rather than geopolitical division. The essay draws on Christina Sharpe’s concept of the ‘wake’ as a means of understanding how migrant subjectivity and community are formed through the multiple forms of racialized violence experienced in transnational mobility.PostprintPeer reviewe

    The new urban paradigm

    This paper argues in favor of a new urban model that harnesses the power that cities have to curb global warming. Such a model tackles fundamental management challenges in the energy, building and transport sectors to promote the growth of diverse and compact cities. Such a model is essential for meeting complex challenges in cities, such as promoting a cohesive social life and a competitive economic base while simultaneously preserving agricultural and natural systems crucial to soil, energy, and material resources. With most of the population living in urban areas, the G20 should recognize the key role that cities play in addressing global challenges such as climate change. Improved measures taken by cities should be an indispensable solution.     Revolutionizing PIP joint fracture treatment: A case of surgical precision and rapid recovery

    Introduction: Proximal interphalangeal joint (PIPj) fractures are a common yet challenging injury, particularly in athletes. This case study explores innovative surgical techniques combined with targeted rehabilitation to optimize recovery and functionality. Case presentation: A 20-year-old male soccer goalkeeper sustained a severe Proximal Interphalangeal Joint fracture-dislocation of the third finger during a game. He was treated using the wide awake local anesthesia no tourniquet (WALANT) technique and a Medartis TriLock plate, originally designed for the proximal phalanx but adapted for use on the middle phalanx. Clinical discussion: Immediate postoperative mobilization was facilitated by the WALANT technique, enhancing pain management and functional recovery. The adaptation of the TriLock plate, typically not used in this context, proved crucial for stabilizing the complex fracture. Follow-up included regular physiotherapy, focusing on mobility exercises and strength training, which were instrumental in the patient's quick return to sport. Conclusions: This case underscores the effectiveness of combining innovative surgical adaptations with early rehabilitation in treating complex hand injuries. Such approaches can lead to successful outcomes, significantly improving recovery times and functional results in athletic populations. This strategy may set a precedent for future treatment protocols in sports-related hand injuries

PCIG10-GA-2011-303728 (CIG Grant NBHCHOICE, Neighbourhood choice, neighbourhood sorting, and neighbourhood effects).The life course framework guides us towards investigating how dynamic life course careers affect residential mobility decision-making and behaviour throughout long periods of individual lifetimes. However, most longitudinal studies linking mobility decision-making to subsequent moving behaviour focus only on year-to-year transitions. This study moves beyond this snapshot approach by analysing the long-term sequencing of moving desires and mobility behaviour within individual lives. Using novel techniques to visualise the desire–mobility sequences of British Household Panel Survey respondents, the study demonstrates that revealing the meanings and significance of particular transitions in moving desires and mobility behaviour requires these transitions to be arranged into mobility biographies. The results highlight the oft-neglected importance of residential stability over the life course, uncovering groups of individuals persistently unable to act in accordance with their moving desires.PostprintPeer reviewe

    Mobility and mobility-related participation outcomes of powered wheelchair and scooter interventions after 4-months and 1-year use.

    Purpose: The aim was to investigate outcomes of powered wheelchair and scooter interventions after 4-months and 1-year use regarding need for assistance when moving around, frequency of mobility-related participation, easiness/difficulty in mobility during participation, and number of participation aspects performed in everyday life. Method: The study was a prospective cohort study, using an instrument focusing on mobility-related participation outcomes of mobility device interventions (NOMO 1.0), at baseline, after 4-months and 1-year use. Results: The results show that the outcomes in terms of participation frequency and easiness in mobility occur in a short time perspective, and that the effects remained stable at 1-year follow-up. The frequency of going for a walk increased most prominently (26%). Even though the majority of the participation aspects were not performed, more often they became easier to perform: 56-91% found that shopping, walking and visiting family/friends were easier. Moreover, independence outdoors and indoors increased. Conclusions: This small study provides knowledge about the outcomes of powered wheelchairs and scooters in terms of mobility and mobility-related participation in real-life situations. The study supports results from former studies, but even so, larger studies are required in order to provide evidence for the effectiveness of powered wheelchairs and scooters. [Box: see text]

    How to face design thinking : Human-centered problem solving and designer\u27s attitude to approach

    In this moment the way of understanding the role of design is considerably different from the past. This commentary provides the issues and possibilities of design thinking from the viewpoint of GK Dynamics, which has long been engaged in design focusing on mobility through pondering about “design thinking and how we are going to utilize it in business. The word design thinking has penetrated society and has been utilized in many scenes in companies and organizations, however various positive and negative opinions of its effectiveness exist. The interpretation of design thinking is diverse; some may believe it is a way to solve problems using designers\u27 thinking methods. The designer should already possess the ability in the first place. Also, one portion of the total solution does not have great value independently. Within a project, designers are required to have the ability to participate in the respective role of finding problems as a design thinker, presenting solutions as practical designers, and considering benefits as users in a timely manner. It is only now that the solution process as “design thinking” has been known widely, and whole society has recognized the importance and benefits of design, determining again the essence as what to do for various problems with human’s own imagination is getting significant

    Efficacy of Chondroprotective Food Supplements Based on Collagen Hydrolysate and Compounds Isolated from Marine Organisms †

    Osteoarthritis belongs to the most common joint diseases in humans and animals and shows increased incidence in older patients. The bioactivities of collagen hydrolysates, sulfated glucosamine and a special fatty acid enriched dog-food were tested in a dog patient study of 52 dogs as potential therapeutic treatment options in early osteoarthritis. Biophysical, biochemical, cell biological and molecular modeling methods support that these well-defined substances may act as effective nutraceuticals. Importantly, the applied collagen hydrolysates as well as sulfated glucosamine residues from marine organisms were strongly supported by both an animal model and molecular modeling of intermolecular interactions. Molecular modeling of predicted interaction dynamics was evaluated for the receptor proteins MMP-3 and ADAMTS-5. These proteins play a prominent role in the maintenance of cartilage health as well as innate and adapted immunity. Nutraceutical data were generated in a veterinary clinical study focusing on mobility and agility. Specifically, key clinical parameter (MMP-3 and TIMP-1) were obtained from blood probes of German shepherd dogs with early osteoarthritis symptoms fed with collagen hydrolysates. Collagen hydrolysate, a chondroprotective food supplement was examined by high resolution NMR experiments. Molecular modeling simulations were used to further characterize the interaction potency of collagen fragments and glucosamines with protein receptor structures. Potential beneficial effects of collagen hydrolysates, sulfated glycans (i.e., sulfated glucosamine from crabs and mussels) and lipids, especially, eicosapentaenoic acid (extracted from fish oil) on biochemical and physiological processes are discussed here in the context of human and veterinary medicine
