    Review of selection criteria for sensor and actuator configurations suitable for internal combustion engines

    This literature review considers the problem of finding a suitable configuration of sensors and actuators for the control of an internal combustion engine. It takes a look at the methods, algorithms, processes, metrics, applications, research groups and patents relevant for this topic. Several formal metric have been proposed, but practical use remains limited. Maximal information criteria are theoretically optimal for selecting sensors, but hard to apply to a system as complex and nonlinear as an engine. Thus, we reviewed methods applied to neighboring fields including nonlinear systems and non-minimal phase systems. Furthermore, the closed loop nature of control means that information is not the only consideration, and speed, stability and robustness have to be considered. The optimal use of sensor information also requires the use of models, observers, state estimators or virtual sensors, and practical acceptance of these remains limited. Simple control metrics such as conditioning number are popular, mostly because they need fewer assumptions than closed-loop metrics, which require a full plant, disturbance and goal model. Overall, no clear consensus can be found on the choice of metrics to define optimal control configurations, with physical measures, linear algebra metrics and modern control metrics all being used. Genetic algorithms and multi-criterial optimisation were identified as the most widely used methods for optimal sensor selection, although addressing the dimensionality and complexity of formulating the problem remains a challenge. This review does present a number of different successful approaches for specific applications domains, some of which may be applicable to diesel engines and other automotive applications. For a thorough treatment, non-linear dynamics and uncertainties need to be considered together, which requires sophisticated (non-Gaussian) stochastic models to establish the value of a control architecture

    Actuator fault tolerant control of variable cycle engine using sliding mode control scheme

    This paper presents a fault tolerant control (FTC) design for the actuator faults in a variable cycle engine (VCE). Ensured by the multiple variable geometries structure of VCE, the design is realized by distributing the control effort among the unfaulty actuators with the “functional redundancy” idea. The FTC design consists of two parts: the fault reconstruction part and the fault tolerant control part, which use a sliding mode observer (SMO) and a sliding mode control (SMC) scheme respectively. Considering the inaccuracy of the fault reconstruction result, the proposed design requires only inaccurate fault information. The stability of the closed-loop control system is proved and the existence condition for the proposed control law is analyzed. This work also reveals its relation to the sliding mode control allocation design and the adaptive SMC design. An application case is then studied for tolerating the loss of effectiveness fault of the nozzle area actuator. Results show that the FTC design is able to tolerate the fault and achieves the same control goal as in the fault-free situation. Finally, a hardware-in-the-loop test is carried out to verify the design in a real-time distributed control system, which demonstrates its use from the engineering perspective

    Electric vehicles (EVs) are playing a vital role in sustainable transportation. It is estimated that by 2030, Battery EVs will become mainstream for passenger car transportation. Even though EVs are gaining interest in sustainable transportation, the future of EV power transmission is facing vital concerns and open research challenges. Considering the case of torque ripple mitigation and improved reliability control techniques in motors, many motor drive control algorithms fail to provide efficient control. To efficiently address this issue, control techniques such as Field Orientation Control (FOC), Direct Torque Control (DTC), Model Predictive Control (MPC), Sliding Mode Control (SMC), and Intelligent Control (IC) techniques are used in the motor drive control algorithms. This literature survey exclusively compares the various advanced control techniques for conventionally used EV motors such as Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM), Brushless Direct Current Motor (BLDC), Switched Reluctance Motor (SRM), and Induction Motors (IM). Furthermore, this paper discusses the EV-motors history, types of EVmotors, EV-motor drives powertrain mathematical modelling, and design procedure of EV-motors. The hardware results have also been compared with different control techniques for BLDC and SRM hub motors. Future direction towards the design of EV by critical selection of motors and their control techniques to minimize the torque ripple and other research opportunities to enhance the performance of EVs are also presented.publishedVersio

    New design of switched reluctance motor using finite element analysis for hybrid electric vehicle applications

    Switched reluctance motors (SRMs) have been gaining increasing popularity and emerging as an attractive alternative to traditional electrical motors in hybrid vehicle applications due to their simple structure, ruggedness, ability of fault-tolerance, extremely high-speed operation, high power density, and low manufacturing cost. However, large torque ripple and acoustic noise are well-known as their major disadvantages. This thesis presents a novel five-phase 15/12 SRM which features higher power density, very low level of vibration with flexibility in controlling the torque ripple profile. This design is classified as an axial field SRM, hence it needs 3-dimensional finite-element analysis model. Nonetheless, an alternative 2-dimensional model is developed and simulated using FEA software (MagNet) in order to analyze the proposed model. The findings from the simulation is scrutinized and analyzed to realize various design features along with performance of the model. The finding in reference to the proposed axial field model is then compared with existing radial field models to validate its performance improvement. The manufacturing issues were addressed to prove its feasibility and cost effectiveness in conjunction with its assembly competences. Taking all the aspects into account superiority of new model\u27s efficiency is comprehended to justify its application in HEV application
