    Exploiting c\mathbf{c}-Closure in Kernelization Algorithms for Graph Problems

    A graph is c-closed if every pair of vertices with at least c common neighbors is adjacent. The c-closure of a graph G is the smallest number such that G is c-closed. Fox et al. [ICALP '18] defined c-closure and investigated it in the context of clique enumeration. We show that c-closure can be applied in kernelization algorithms for several classic graph problems. We show that Dominating Set admits a kernel of size k^O(c), that Induced Matching admits a kernel with O(c^7*k^8) vertices, and that Irredundant Set admits a kernel with O(c^(5/2)*k^3) vertices.     Recognizing Graphs Close to Bipartite Graphs with an Application to Colouring Reconfiguration

    We continue research into a well-studied family of problems that ask whether the vertices of a graph can be partitioned into sets AA and~BB, where AA is an independent set and BB induces a graph from some specified graph class G{\cal G}. We let G{\cal G} be the class of kk-degenerate graphs. This problem is known to be polynomial-time solvable if k=0k=0 (bipartite graphs) and NP-complete if k=1k=1 (near-bipartite graphs) even for graphs of maximum degree 44. Yang and Yuan [DM, 2006] showed that the k=1k=1 case is polynomial-time solvable for graphs of maximum degree 33. This also follows from a result of Catlin and Lai [DM, 1995]. We consider graphs of maximum degree k+2k+2 on nn vertices. We show how to find AA and BB in O(n)O(n) time for k=1k=1, and in O(n2)O(n^2) time for k2k\geq 2. Together, these results provide an algorithmic version of a result of Catlin [JCTB, 1979] and also provide an algorithmic version of a generalization of Brook's Theorem, which was proven in a more general way by Borodin, Kostochka and Toft [DM, 2000] and Matamala [JGT, 2007].     Crossing Patterns in Nonplanar Road Networks

    We define the crossing graph of a given embedded graph (such as a road network) to be a graph with a vertex for each edge of the embedding, with two crossing graph vertices adjacent when the corresponding two edges of the embedding cross each other. In this paper, we study the sparsity properties of crossing graphs of real-world road networks. We show that, in large road networks (the Urban Road Network Dataset), the crossing graphs have connected components that are primarily trees, and that the remaining non-tree components are typically sparse (technically, that they have bounded degeneracy). We prove theoretically that when an embedded graph has a sparse crossing graph, it has other desirable properties that lead to fast algorithms for shortest paths and other algorithms important in geographic information systems. Notably, these graphs have polynomial expansion, meaning that they and all their subgraphs have small separators.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures.     A Novel Approach to Finding Near-Cliques: The Triangle-Densest Subgraph Problem

    Many graph mining applications rely on detecting subgraphs which are near-cliques. There exists a dichotomy between the results in the existing work related to this problem: on the one hand the densest subgraph problem (DSP) which maximizes the average degree over all subgraphs is solvable in polynomial time but for many networks fails to find subgraphs which are near-cliques. On the other hand, formulations that are geared towards finding near-cliques are NP-hard and frequently inapproximable due to connections with the Maximum Clique problem. In this work, we propose a formulation which combines the best of both worlds: it is solvable in polynomial time and finds near-cliques when the DSP fails. Surprisingly, our formulation is a simple variation of the DSP. Specifically, we define the triangle densest subgraph problem (TDSP): given G(V,E)G(V,E), find a subset of vertices SS^* such that τ(S)=maxSVt(S)S\tau(S^*)=\max_{S \subseteq V} \frac{t(S)}{|S|}, where t(S)t(S) is the number of triangles induced by the set SS. We provide various exact and approximation algorithms which the solve the TDSP efficiently. Furthermore, we show how our algorithms adapt to the more general problem of maximizing the kk-clique average density. Finally, we provide empirical evidence that the TDSP should be used whenever the output of the DSP fails to output a near-clique.Comment: 42 page

    Approximation Algorithms for Polynomial-Expansion and Low-Density Graphs

    We study the family of intersection graphs of low density objects in low dimensional Euclidean space. This family is quite general, and includes planar graphs. We prove that such graphs have small separators. Next, we present efficient (1+ε)(1+\varepsilon)-approximation algorithms for these graphs, for Independent Set, Set Cover, and Dominating Set problems, among others. We also prove corresponding hardness of approximation for some of these optimization problems, providing a characterization of their intractability in terms of density
