Typically, the mechanical feedback that a user obtains during a gesture is simply the mechanical weight and friction of the specific input device being employed. This is very different from everyday experience. Here mechanical feedback to the hand and arm results from the manual manipulation of tools and other objects. This paper reports preliminary research to provide tactile feedback within gestural human computer interaction (HCI) at the users desktop. It discusses our preliminary ideas on the use of force display within gestural HCI for broadband telematics applications. 1. Introduction Future communications systems are expected to carry many of the current activities of daily life. In the presentation of these services analogy and metaphor to real world objects will be necessary to provide easy command and control of technology being used. Typically, this is expected to be via virtual objects within virtual worlds. In this context haptic display has a vital role to play as..
