This paper describes feedback as a tool to facilitate CSCL and shows how feedback is applied in the K3 research project. K3 uses feedback on a group as well as on an individual level to achieve positive motivational and cognitive effects on part of the learners. Feedback is provided a) to the learning results and b) to the collaborative processes themselves. Feedback in K3 is based on a variety of different criteria which serve as performance measures. Learning results are primarily judged on the basis of qualitative criteria – e.g. validity. Learning Processes are primarily assessed with the help of quantitative measures, for example number of contributions on group/individual levels. Such quantitative process measures are on the on hand very limited concerning their expressiveness but on the other hand are able to be given in real time. Therefore they are also an instrument to compensate reduced social presence in virtual learning spaces like K3
