Pathological changes in an organ or tissue may be reflected in proteomic patterns in serum. The early detection of cancer is crucial for successful treatment. Some cancers affect the concentration of certain molecules in the blood, which allows early diagnosis by analyzing the blood mass spectrum. It is possible that exclusive serum proteomic patterns could be used to differentiate cancer samples from non-cancer ones. Several techniques have been developed for the analysis of mass-spectrum curve, and use them for the detection of prostate, ovarian, breast, bladder, pancreatic, kidney, liver, and colon cancers. In present study, we applied data mining to the diagnosis of ovarian cancer and identified the most informative points of the mass-spectrum curve, then used student t-test and neural networks to determine the differences between the curves of cancer patients and healthy people. Two serum SELDI MS data sets were used in this research to identify serum proteomic patterns that distinguish the serum of ovarian cancer cases from non-cancer controls. Statistical testing and genetic algorithm-based methods are used for feature selection respectively. The results showed that (1) data mining techniques can be successfully applied to ovarian cancer detection with a reasonably high performance; (2) the discriminatory features (proteomic patterns) can be very different from one selection method to another

The number of people with lung cancer has reached approximately 2.09 million people worldwide. Out of 9.06 million cases of death, 1.76 million people die due to lung cancer. Lung cancer can be automatically identified using a computer-aided diagnosis system (CAD) such as image processing. The steps taken for early detection are pre-processing feature extraction, and classification. Pre-processing is carried out in several stages, namely grayscale images, noise removal, and contrast limited adaptive histogram equalization. This image feature extracted using GLCM and classified using 2 method of neural network which is feed forward neural network (FFNN) dan feed backward neural network (FBNN). This research aims to obtain the best neural network model to classify lung cancer a. Based on training time and accuracy, the best method of FFNN is kernel extreme learning machine (KELM), with a training time of 12 seconds and an accuracy of 93.45%, while the best method of FBNN is Backpropagation with a training time of 18 minutes 04 seconds and an accuracy of 97.5%

This paper proposes a breast cancer detection module using Artificial Neural Network for small data set. The developed system consists of hardware and software. Hardware included UWB transceiver and a pair of home- made directional sensor/antenna. The software included a Graphical User Interface (GUI) and k-fold based feed-forward back propagation Neural Network module to detect the tumor existence, size and location along with soft interface between software and hardware. Forward scattering technique is used by placing two sensors diagonally opposite sides of a breast phantom. UWB pulses are transmitted from one side of phantom and received from other side, controlled by the software interface in PC environment. Firstly feed forward backpropagation neural network (FFBNN) is developed. Then, k-fold is combined with developed FFBNN for testing purpose. Four data sets are created where contains 125, 95, 65 and 30 data samples in 1st,2nd,3rd and 4th data set respectively. Collected received signals were then fed into the NN module for training, testing and validation. The process is done for all data sets separately. The system exhibits detection efficiency of tumor existence, location (x, y, z), and size were approximately 87.72%, 87.24%, 83.93% and 80.51% for 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th data set respectively. The proposed module is very practical with low-cost and user friendly. The developed breast cancer detection module can be used for large data samples as well as for minimum data samples

Breast cancer cases are increasing year by year and second leading reasons for the women's death worldwide. Early detection is very important and will help to save thousands of peoples' lives. The available systems such as Mammogram, MRI and ultrasound are invasive, expensive and need expert to operate. This paper presents a low cost and non-invasive breast cancer detection system for early detection. This system consisted hardware which consist a pair of home-made antenna and Ultra wide-band (UWB) and software which consist of a Neural Network (NN) module. Antenna will transmit the signal while another will receive. Both forward scattering and backward scattering performance are analyzed. The received signals are fed into NN module for further processing. Breast phantom is placed in the center and a pair of home-made antennas was placed diagonally opposite side of the breast phantom. K-fold cross validation based feed forward NN is used to train, validate and test the features. The system can screen the breast cancer with average detection performance of 87.55% using backward scattering signals while 84.17% using forward scattering signal. The proposed breast cancer detection system will be very useful for home user to check breast health regularly

Given that neural networks have been widely reported in the research community of medical imaging, we provide a focused literature survey on recent neural network developments in computer-aided diagnosis, medical image segmentation and edge detection towards visual content analysis, and medical image registration for its pre-processing and post-processing, with the aims of increasing awareness of how neural networks can be applied to these areas and to provide a foundation for further research and practical development. Representative techniques and algorithms are explained in detail to provide inspiring examples illustrating: (i) how a known neural network with fixed structure and training procedure could be applied to resolve a medical imaging problem; (ii) how medical images could be analysed, processed, and characterised by neural networks; and (iii) how neural networks could be expanded further to resolve problems relevant to medical imaging. In the concluding section, a highlight of comparisons among many neural network applications is included to provide a global view on computational intelligence with neural networks in medical imaging

This paper presents a simple feed-forward back-propagation Neural Network (NN) model to detect and locate early breast cancer/tumor efficiently through the investigation of Electromagnetic (EM) waves. A spherical tumor of radius 0.25 cm was created and placed at arbitrary locations in a breast model using an EM simulator. Directional antennas were used to transmit and receive Ultra-Wide Band (UWB) signals in 4 to 8 GHz frequency range. Small training and validation sets were constructed to train and test the NN. The received signals were fed into the trained NN model to find the presence and location of tumor. Very optimistic results (about 100% and 94.4% presence and location detection rate of tumor respectively) have been observed for early received signal components with the NN model. Hence, the proposed model is very potential for early tumor detection to save human lives in the future
