    Get PDF
This paper discusses the potential for service robots to overcome barriers and increase independence of elderly and disabled people. It includes a brief overview of the existing uses of service robots by disabled and elderly people and advances in technology which will make new uses possible and provides suggestions for some of these new applications. The paper also considers the design and other conditions to be met for user acceptance. It also discusses the complementarity of assistive service robots and personal assistance and considers the types of applications and users for which service robots are and are not suitable

Paper currency identification is one of the image processing techniques i.e. clothed to recognize currency of different countries. The paper currencies of different countries are collectively rises ever more. However, the main intention of most of the standard currency recognition systems and machines is on recognizing fake currencies. The features are extracted by using image processing toolbox in MATLAB and preprocessed by reducing the data size in captured image. The expose pluck out is discharged by considering HSV (Hue Saturation Value). The chief is neural network classifier and the next step is recognition. MATLAB is used to evolve this program. The new source of paper currency recognition is pattern recognition. But for currency recognition, converter system is an image processing method which is used to identify currency and transfer it into the other currencies as the users need. The need of currency recognition and converters is accurately to recognize the currencies and transfer the currency immediately into the other currency. This application uses the computing energy in differentiation among different kinds of currencies are differentiated with their suitable class using power computing. Fake note at present plays a key topic for the researchers. The recognition system is composed of two parts. First is the captured image and the second is recognition. Forged currencies recognition is the main aim of the standard paper currency identification system. The most mandatory system is currency identification system and it should be very accurate. The performance of different methods are surveyed to refine the exactness of currency recognition system

Eyes-Free Vision-Based Scanning of Aligned Barcodes and Information Extraction from Aligned Nutrition Tables

Visually impaired (VI) individuals struggle with grocery shopping and have to rely on either friends, family or grocery store associates for shopping. ShopMobile 2 is a proof-of-concept system that allows VI shoppers to shop independently in a grocery store using only their smartphone. Unlike other assistive shopping systems that use dedicated hardware, this system is a software only solution that relies on fast computer vision algorithms. It consists of three modules - an eyes free barcode scanner, an optical character recognition (OCR) module, and a tele-assistance module. The eyes-free barcode scanner allows VI shoppers to locate and retrieve products by scanning barcodes on shelves and on products. The OCR module allows shoppers to read nutrition facts on products and the tele-assistance module allows them to obtain help from sighted individuals at remote locations. This dissertation discusses, provides implementations of, and presents laboratory and real-world experiments related to all three modules

Adaptive and Explainable Deployment of Navigation Skills via Hierarchical Deep Reinforcement Learning

For robotic vehicles to navigate robustly and safely in unseen environments, it is crucial to decide the most suitable navigation policy. However, most existing deep reinforcement learning based navigation policies are trained with a hand-engineered curriculum and reward function which are difficult to be deployed in a wide range of real-world scenarios. In this paper, we propose a framework to learn a family of low-level navigation policies and a high-level policy for deploying them. The main idea is that, instead of learning a single navigation policy with a fixed reward function, we simultaneously learn a family of policies that exhibit different behaviors with a wide range of reward functions. We then train the high-level policy which adaptively deploys the most suitable navigation skill. We evaluate our approach in simulation and the real world and demonstrate that our method can learn diverse navigation skills and adaptively deploy them. We also illustrate that our proposed hierarchical learning framework presents explainability by providing semantics for the behavior of an autonomous agent.Comment: ICRA 2023. Detecting Deceptive Dark-Pattern Web Advertisements for Blind Screen-Reader Users

Advertisements have become commonplace on modern websites. While ads are typically designed for visual consumption, it is unclear how they affect blind users who interact with the ads using a screen reader. Existing research studies on non-visual web interaction predominantly focus on general web browsing; the specific impact of extraneous ad content on blind users\u27 experience remains largely unexplored. To fill this gap, we conducted an interview study with 18 blind participants; we found that blind users are often deceived by ads that contextually blend in with the surrounding web page content. While ad blockers can address this problem via a blanket filtering operation, many websites are increasingly denying access if an ad blocker is active. Moreover, ad blockers often do not filter out internal ads injected by the websites themselves. Therefore, we devised an algorithm to automatically identify contextually deceptive ads on a web page. Specifically, we built a detection model that leverages a multi-modal combination of handcrafted and automatically extracted features to determine if a particular ad is contextually deceptive. Evaluations of the model on a representative test dataset and \u27in-the-wild\u27 random websites yielded F1 scores of 0.86 and 0.88, respectively
