Investigating Retrieval Method Selection with Axiomatic Features
We consider algorithm selection in the context of ad-hoc information retrieval. Given a query and a pair of retrieval methods, we propose a meta-learner that predicts how to combine the methods' relevance scores into an overall relevance score. Inspired by neural models' different properties with regard to IR axioms, these predictions are based on features that quantify axiom-related properties of the query and its top ranked documents. We conduct an evaluation on TREC Web Track data and find that the meta-learner often significantly improves over the individual methods. Finally, we conduct feature and query weight analyses to investigate the meta-learner's behavior
Hopfield Networks in Relevance and Redundancy Feature Selection Applied to Classification of Biomedical High-Resolution Micro-CT Images
We study filter–based feature selection methods for classification of biomedical images. For feature selection, we use two filters — a relevance filter which measures usefulness of individual features for target prediction, and a redundancy filter, which measures similarity between features. As selection method that combines relevance and redundancy we try out a Hopfield network. We experimentally compare selection methods, running unitary redundancy and relevance filters, against a greedy algorithm with redundancy thresholds [9], the min-redundancy max-relevance integration [8,23,36], and our Hopfield network selection. We conclude that on the whole, Hopfield selection was one of the most successful methods, outperforming min-redundancy max-relevance when\ud

Improving feature selection algorithms using normalised feature histograms
The proposed feature selection method builds a histogram of the most stable
features from random subsets of a training set and ranks the features based on
a classifier based cross-validation. This approach reduces the instability of
features obtained by conventional feature selection methods that occur with
variation in training data and selection criteria. Classification results on
four microarray and three image datasets using three major feature selection
criteria and a naive Bayes classifier show considerable improvement over
benchmark results
Feature selection when there are many influential features
Recent discussion of the success of feature selection methods has argued that
focusing on a relatively small number of features has been counterproductive.
Instead, it is suggested, the number of significant features can be in the
thousands or tens of thousands, rather than (as is commonly supposed at
present) approximately in the range from five to fifty. This change, in orders
of magnitude, in the number of influential features, necessitates alterations
to the way in which we choose features and to the manner in which the success
of feature selection is assessed. In this paper, we suggest a general approach
that is suited to cases where the number of relevant features is very large,
and we consider particular versions of the approach in detail. We propose ways
of measuring performance, and we study both theoretical and numerical
properties of the proposed methodology.Comment: Published in at http://dx.doi.org/10.3150/13-BEJ536 the Bernoulli

Exploring Language-Independent Emotional Acoustic Features via Feature Selection
We propose a novel feature selection strategy to discover
language-independent acoustic features that tend to be responsible for emotions
regardless of languages, linguistics and other factors. Experimental results
suggest that the language-independent feature subset discovered yields the
performance comparable to the full feature set on various emotional speech
corpora.Comment: 15 pages, 2 figures, 6 table
