    Time in written spaces

Time in written form pervades our social existence. From the daily news, whether on the web or in print, to wall calendars in our homes or offices, which tell us what day it is; from personal watches or cellphones to public clocks, which tell us what hour it is; from small change in our purses or pockets to use-by dates on our groceries, which remind us when things were made; and from personal or recreational diaries to bus and train timetables, which tell us when we did or should do things, we are constantly made aware of time and its passing in the modern world. And because of the means by which we tell the time in these contexts, it is easy to fall into the trap of thinking that the ancient world did not have such persistent reminders as well. Yet archaeology and literature combine to tell us differently. In this chapter I wish to discuss aspects of this combination, focusing on time in written forms, on the collocation of the mechanisms of time and writing, and on the spatial setting in which these are found, all of which demonstrate a politicization of time in the late Republic and early Empire

    Get PDF
Since the studies of Pierre Salama, milestones have been considered as inscriptions which exude and express the imperial power. Notwithstanding, the studies on the Epigraphy of this road have been generally seen firstly from an epigraphical view and secondly, as a proof to fill in the gap for road system. The aim of this research is linking the geographical information with their characteristic as element of power. This allows me to draw the spaces of power in the province of Baetica and to delve into administrative implications of these inscriptions. It also allows me to propose propaganda as their main function, more than their traditional consideration as an informative element

In this article we present an inscription, transcribed by the Catalan humanist Pere Miquel Carbonell at the end of the fifteenth century. This inscription has been little cited and often rejected by authors who have worked on the situation and structure of the Pompey trophies erected on the limits between Gaul and Hispania Citerior. Here we propose to add this new testimony, taking into account its tradition (almost minimal) in later historians as well as comparing it with previous and later testimonies on the same monument. We revise its rejection and also question the role of the Pyrenees as a border since the creation of the Hispanic provinces until the first century AC. The characteristics of the text lead us to propose that it formed part of a Res Gestae by Pompeius Magnus, constituting a precedent ormodel later used by August

    Get PDF
This paper aims to demonstrate that the status of the province of Baetica within the Roman Empire was much greater than has previously been believed. For a long time it has been thought that the sphere of jurisdiction of the senate was for those members of the ordo who lacked either the emperor's backing or the solid support of their allies, so that if a senator of praetorian rank was designated to govern a proconsular province, this was considered an obstacle to his career. None the less, it can be shown that government of Baetica did not represent a hiatus in a senator's cursus, and this province was not undervalued, as might have been the case with others whose government was not attractive to senators desiring promotion

A confrontation between epigraphic and literary sources is necessary to reconstruct the proconsular list of Asia for the mid reign of Marcus Aurelius (168-173 AD): in those years the province Asia was directly involved in Marcus' wars against barbarian raiders, especially the bellum Germanicum et Sarmaticum on the Danube (169-175) and the raids of Costobocs in the Balkans and Bastarnae in Anatolia (170-171). Therefore the imperial government ordered supplementary recruitments and new taxes. At the same time, the New Prophecy of Montanus, an apocalyptic Christian movement, broke out in Phrygia and Lydia (171-172) and the bishop of Laodikeia on the Lykos, Sagaris, was sentenced to death. These were the main emergencies that the Roman proconsuls of Asia were requested to face in the early Seventies of the 2nd cent. AD
