Two-Layered Superposition of Broadcast/Multicast and Unicast Signals in Multiuser OFDMA Systems
We study optimal delivery strategies of one common and independent
messages from a source to multiple users in wireless environments. In
particular, two-layered superposition of broadcast/multicast and unicast
signals is considered in a downlink multiuser OFDMA system. In the literature
and industry, the two-layer superposition is often considered as a pragmatic
approach to make a compromise between the simple but suboptimal orthogonal
multiplexing (OM) and the optimal but complex fully-layered non-orthogonal
multiplexing. In this work, we show that only two-layers are necessary to
achieve the maximum sum-rate when the common message has higher priority than
the individual unicast messages, and OM cannot be sum-rate optimal in
general. We develop an algorithm that finds the optimal power allocation over
the two-layers and across the OFDMA radio resources in static channels and a
class of fading channels. Two main use-cases are considered: i) Multicast and
unicast multiplexing when users with uplink capabilities request both
common and independent messages, and ii) broadcast and unicast multiplexing
when the common message targets receive-only devices and users with uplink
capabilities additionally request independent messages. Finally, we develop a
transceiver design for broadcast/multicast and unicast superposition
transmission based on LTE-A-Pro physical layer and show with numerical
evaluations in mobile environments with multipath propagation that the capacity
improvements can be translated into significant practical performance gains
compared to the orthogonal schemes in the 3GPP specifications. We also analyze
the impact of real channel estimation and show that significant gains in terms
of spectral efficiency or coverage area are still available even with
estimation errors and imperfect interference cancellation for the two-layered
superposition system
MCS MAP FOR LINK-LEVEL SIMULATION OF TWO-USER PD-NOMA SYSTEM
Power Domain Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (PD-NOMA) is a promising technique for future wireless networks. Currently, the growing number of researchers are addressing PD-NOMA issues. The great number of known results are based on the Shannon capacity theorem, assuming infinite code block length. However, they cannot be achieved in practice when modulation and coding schemes (MCS) with finite code block length are used. To solve this problem, we propose an approach which allows utilizing LTE MCSs in the link-level simulation of PD-NOMA. In this paper, we present an adaptive MCS map for a PD-NOMA system with two users, considering non-perfect Serial Interference Cancelation (SIC). In addition, we have developed a map for power allocation coefficients (PAC). The max-sum rate criterion and 10%-Block Error Rate constraint are utilized. The MCS and PAC maps allow access point to jointly and adaptively select MCS parameters for the users depending on their SNR values. The proposed MCS maps can be used in a link-level simulation of the PD-NOMA system to near-practical performance
Operating multi-user transmission for 5G and beyond cellular systems
Every decade, a new generation of cellular networks is released to keep up with the ever-growing demand for data and use cases. Traditionally, cellular networks rely on partitioning radio resources into a set of physical resource blocks (PRBs). Each PRB is used by the base-station to transmit exclusively to one user, which is referred to as single-user transmission. Recently, multi-user transmission has been introduced to enable the base-station to simultaneously serve multiple users using the same PRB. While multi-user transmission can be much more efficient than its single-user counterpart, it is significantly more challenging to operate. Thus, in this thesis we study the operation, i.e., the Radio Resource Management (RRM), for two popular multi-user transmission technologies; namely, 1) Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA) and 2) Multi-User Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MU-MIMO).
For NOMA RRM, we study a multi-cell, multi-carrier downlink system. First, we formulate and solve a centralized proportional fair scheduling genie problem that jointly performs user selection, power allocation and power distribution, and Modulation and Coding Scheme (MCS) selection. While such a centralized schedule is practically infeasible, it upper bounds the achievable performance. Then, we propose a simple static coordinated power allocation scheme across all cells for NOMA using a simple power map that is easily calibrated offline. We find that using a simple static coordinated power allocation scheme improves performance by 80% compared to equal power allocation. Finally, we focus on online network operation and study practical schedulers that perform user-selection, power distribution, and MCS selection. We propose a family of practical scheduling algorithms, each of them exhibiting a different trade-off between complexity (i.e., run-time) and performance. The one we selected sacrifices a maximum of 10% performance while reducing the computation time by a factor of 45 with respect to the optimal user scheduler.
For MU-MIMO RRM, we focus on the study of the downlink of an OFDMA massive MU-MIMO single cell assuming ZFT (Zero Forcing Transmission) precoding. An offline study is initiated with the goal of finding the best achievable performance by jointly optimizing user-selection, power distribution and MCS selection. The best performance is analyzed by using both Branch-Reduce-and-Bound (BRB) global optimization technique for upper-bounding the achievable performance and a set of different greedy searches for lower bounding the achievable performance to find good feasible solutions. The results suggest that a specific search strategy referred to as greedy-down-all-the-way (GDAW) with full-drop (FD) is quasi-optimal. Afterwards, we design a simple practical scheduler that achieves 97% of the performance to GDAW with FD and has comparable runtime to that of the state-of-the-art benchmark that selects all users, performs ZFT precoding followed
by power distribution using water-filling. The proposed scheme performs a simple round robin grouping to select users, followed by ZFT precoding and joint power distribution and MCS selection via a novel greedy algorithm with a possible additional iteration to take zero-rate users into account. Our solution outperforms the benchmark by 281%
Multi-destination Aggregation with Binary Symmetric Broadcast Channel Based Coding in 802.11 WLANs
In this paper we consider the potential benefits of adopting a binary symmetric broadcast channel paradigm for multi-destination aggregation in 802.11 WLANs, as opposed to a more conventional packet erasure channel paradigm. We propose two approaches for multi-destination aggregation, i.e. superposition coding and a simpler time-sharing coding. Theoretical and simulation results for both unicast and multicast traffic demonstrate that increases in network throughput of more than 100% are possible over a wide range of network conditions and that the much simpler time-sharing scheme yields most of these gains and have minimal loss of performance. Importantly, these performance gains are achieved exclusively through software rather than hardware changes
Performance analysis of 4G wireless networks using system level simulator
Doutoramento em Engenharia ElectrotécnicaIn the last decade, mobile wireless communications have witnessed an explosive
growth in the user’s penetration rate and their widespread deployment around the
globe. In particular, a research topic of particular relevance in telecommunications
nowadays is related to the design and implementation of mobile communication
systems of 4th generation (4G). 4G networks will be characterized by the support
of multiple radio access technologies in a core network fully compliant with the
Internet Protocol (all IP paradigms). Such networks will sustain the stringent
quality of service (QoS) requirements and the expected high data rates from the
type of multimedia applications (i.e. YouTube and Skype) to be available in the
near future. Therefore, 4G wireless communications system will be of paramount
importance on the development of the information society in the near future.
As 4G wireless services will continue to increase, this will put more and more
pressure on the spectrum availability. There is a worldwide recognition that
methods of spectrum managements have reached their limit and are no longer
optimal, therefore new paradigms must be sought. Studies show that most of the
assigned spectrum is under-utilized, thus the problem in most cases is inefficient
spectrum management rather spectrum shortage. There are currently trends
towards a more liberalized approach of spectrum management, which are tightly
linked to what is commonly termed as Cognitive Radio (CR).
Furthermore, conventional deployment of 4G wireless systems (one BS in cell and
mobile deploy around it) are known to have problems in providing fairness (users
closer to the BS are more benefited relatively to the cell edge users) and in
covering some zones affected by shadowing, therefore the use of relays has been
proposed as a solution.
To evaluate and analyse the performances of 4G wireless systems software tools
are normally used. Software tools have become more and more mature in recent
years and their need to provide a high level evaluation of proposed algorithms and
protocols is now more important. The system level simulation (SLS) tools provide
a fundamental and flexible way to test all the envisioned algorithms and protocols
under realistic conditions, without the need to deal with the problems of live
networks or reduced scope prototypes. Furthermore, the tools allow network
designers a rapid collection of a wide range of performance metrics that are useful
for the analysis and optimization of different algorithms.
This dissertation proposes the design and implementation of conventional system
level simulator (SLS), which afterwards enhances for the 4G wireless technologies
namely cognitive Radios (IEEE802.22) and Relays (IEEE802.16j). SLS is then
used for the analysis of proposed algorithms and protocols.FC
Eficiência energética avançada para sistema OFDMA CoMP coordenação multiponto
Doutoramento em Engenharia EletrotécnicaThe ever-growing energy consumption in mobile networks stimulated by
the expected growth in data tra ffic has provided the impetus for mobile
operators to refocus network design, planning and deployment towards reducing
the cost per bit, whilst at the same time providing a signifi cant step
towards reducing their operational expenditure. As a step towards incorporating
cost-eff ective mobile system, 3GPP LTE-Advanced has adopted the
coordinated multi-point (CoMP) transmission technique due to its ability
to mitigate and manage inter-cell interference (ICI). Using CoMP the cell
average and cell edge throughput are boosted. However, there is room for
reducing energy consumption further by exploiting the inherent
exibility of
dynamic resource allocation protocols. To this end packet scheduler plays
the central role in determining the overall performance of the 3GPP longterm
evolution (LTE) based on packet-switching operation and provide a
potential research playground for optimizing energy consumption in future
networks. In this thesis we investigate the baseline performance for down
link CoMP using traditional scheduling approaches, and subsequently go
beyond and propose novel energy e fficient scheduling (EES) strategies that
can achieve power-e fficient transmission to the UEs whilst enabling both
system energy effi ciency gain and fairness improvement. However, ICI can
still be prominent when multiple nodes use common resources with di fferent
power levels inside the cell, as in the so called heterogeneous networks (Het-
Net) environment. HetNets are comprised of two or more tiers of cells. The
rst, or higher tier, is a traditional deployment of cell sites, often referred
to in this context as macrocells. The lower tiers are termed small cells, and
can appear as microcell, picocells or femtocells. The HetNet has attracted
signiffi cant interest by key manufacturers as one of the enablers for high
speed data at low cost. Research until now has revealed several key hurdles
that must be overcome before HetNets can achieve their full potential:
bottlenecks in the backhaul must be alleviated, as well as their seamless
interworking with CoMP. In this thesis we explore exactly the latter hurdle,
and present innovative ideas on advancing CoMP to work in synergy with
HetNet deployment, complemented by a novel resource allocation policy
for HetNet tighter interference management. As system level simulator has
been used to analyze the proposed algorithm/protocols, and results have
concluded that up to 20% energy gain can be observed.O aumento do consumo de energia nas TICs e em particular nas redes de
No entanto
(i) os estrangulamentos no backhaul devem ser aliviados; (ii) bem
como sua perfeita interoperabilidade com CoMP. Nesta tese exploramos

Adaptive Communications for Next Generation Broadband Wireless Access Systems
In Broadband Wireless Access systems the efficient use of the resources is crucial from many points of views. From the operator point of view, the bandwidth is a scarce, valuable, and expensive resource which must be exploited in an efficient manner while the Quality of Service (QoS) provided to the users is guaranteed. On the other hand, a tight delay and link quality constraints are imposed on each data flow hence the user experiences the same quality as in fixed networks. During the last few years many techniques have been developed in order to increase the spectral efficiency and the throughput. Among them, the use of multiple antennas at the transmitter and the receiver (exploiting spatial multiplexing) with the joint optimization of the medium access control layer and the physical layer parameters. In this Ph.D. thesis, different adaptive techniques for B3G multicarrier wireless systems are developed and proposed focusing on the SS-MC-MA and the OFDM(A) (IEEE 802.16a/e/m standards) communication schemes. The research lines emphasize into the adaptation of the transmission having (Partial) knowledge of the Channel State Information for both; single antenna and multiple antenna links. For single antenna links, the implementation of a joint resource allocation and scheduling strategy by including adaptive modulation and coding is investigated. A low complexity resource allocation and scheduling algorithm is proposed with the objective to cope with real- and/or non-real- time requirements and constraints. A special attention is also devoted in reducing the required signalling. However, for multiple antenna links, the performance of a proposed adaptive transmit antenna selection scheme jointly with space-time block coding selection is investigated and compared with conventional structures. In this research line, mainly two optimizations criteria are proposed for spatial link adaptation, one based on the minimum error rate for fixed throughput, and the second focused on the maximisation of the rate for fixed error rate. Finally, some indications are given on how to include the spatial adaptation into the investigated and proposed resource allocation and scheduling process developed for single antenna transmission
Multilayer optimization in radio resource allocation for the packet transmission in wireless networks
no desempenho do sistema.
camadas fÃsica e de acesso ao meio do standard IEEE802.16e.In the last decade mobile wireless communications have witnessed an explosive growth in the user’s penetration rate and their widespread deployment around the globe. It is expected that this tendency will continue to increase with the convergence of fixed Internet wired networks with mobile ones and with the evolution to the full IP architecture paradigm. Therefore mobile wireless communications will be of paramount importance on the development of the information society of the near future.
In particular a research topic of particular relevance in telecommunications nowadays is related to the design and implementation of mobile communication systems of 4th generation. 4G networks will be characterized by the support of
multiple radio access technologies in a core network fully compliant with the Internet Protocol (all IP paradigm). Such networks will sustain the stringent quality of service (QoS) requirements and the expected high data rates from the type of multimedia applications to be available in the near future. The approach followed in the design and implementation of the mobile wireless networks of current generation (2G and 3G) has been the stratification of the architecture into a communication protocol model composed by a set of layers, in which each one encompasses some set of functionalities. In such protocol layered model, communications is only allowed between adjacent layers and through specific interface service points. This modular concept eases the
implementation of new functionalities as the behaviour of each layer in the protocol stack is not affected by the others. However, the fact that lower layers in the protocol stack model do not utilize information available from upper layers, and vice versa, downgrades the performance achieved. This is particularly relevant if multiple antenna systems, in a MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) configuration, are implemented. MIMO schemes introduce another degree of freedom for radio resource allocation: the space domain.
Contrary to the time and frequency domains, radio resources mapped into the spatial domain cannot be assumed as completely orthogonal, due to the
amount of interference resulting from users transmitting in the same frequency sub-channel and/or time slots but in different spatial beams. Therefore, the availability of information regarding the state of radio resources, from lower to upper layers, is of fundamental importance in the prosecution of the levels of QoS expected from those multimedia applications.
In order to match applications requirements and the constraints of the mobile radio channel, in the last few years researches have proposed a new paradigm for the layered architecture for communications: the cross-layer design framework. In a general way, the cross-layer design paradigm refers to a protocol design in which the dependence between protocol layers is actively
exploited, by breaking out the stringent rules which restrict the communication only between adjacent layers in the original reference model, and allowing
direct interaction among different layers of the stack.
An efficient management of the set of available radio resources demand for the implementation of efficient and low complexity packet schedulers which prioritize user’s transmissions according to inputs provided from lower as well as upper layers in the protocol stack, fully compliant with the cross-layer design paradigm. Specifically, efficiently designed packet schedulers for 4G networks
should result in the maximization of the capacity available, through the consideration of the limitations imposed by the mobile radio channel and
comply with the set of QoS requirements from the application layer.
IEEE 802.16e standard, also named as Mobile WiMAX, seems to comply with the specifications of 4G mobile networks. The scalable architecture, low cost implementation and high data throughput, enable efficient data multiplexing and low data latency, which are attributes essential to enable broadband data services. Also, the connection oriented approach of Its medium access layer is
fully compliant with the quality of service demands from such applications.
Therefore, Mobile WiMAX seems to be a promising 4G mobile wireless networks candidate.
In this thesis it is proposed the investigation, design and implementation of packet scheduling algorithms for the efficient management of the set of
available radio resources, in time, frequency and spatial domains of the Mobile WiMAX networks. The proposed algorithms combine input metrics from physical layer and QoS requirements from upper layers, according to the crosslayer design paradigm. Proposed schedulers are evaluated by means of system level simulations, conducted in a system level simulation platform implementing the physical and medium access control layers of the
IEEE802.16e standard
Prediction-based techniques for the optimization of mobile networks
Mención Internacional en el tÃtulo de doctorMobile cellular networks are complex system whose behavior is characterized by the superposition
of several random phenomena, most of which, related to human activities, such as mobility,
communications and network usage. However, when observed in their totality, the many individual
components merge into more deterministic patterns and trends start to be identifiable and
predictable.
In this thesis we analyze a recent branch of network optimization that is commonly referred to
as anticipatory networking and that entails the combination of prediction solutions and network
optimization schemes. The main intuition behind anticipatory networking is that knowing in
advance what is going on in the network can help understanding potentially severe problems and
mitigate their impact by applying solution when they are still in their initial states. Conversely,
network forecast might also indicate a future improvement in the overall network condition (i.e.
load reduction or better signal quality reported from users). In such a case, resources can be
assigned more sparingly requiring users to rely on buffered information while waiting for the
better condition when it will be more convenient to grant more resources.
In the beginning of this thesis we will survey the current anticipatory networking panorama
and the many prediction and optimization solutions proposed so far. In the main body of the work,
we will propose our novel solutions to the problem, the tools and methodologies we designed to
evaluate them and to perform a real world evaluation of our schemes.
By the end of this work it will be clear that not only is anticipatory networking a very promising
theoretical framework, but also that it is feasible and it can deliver substantial benefit to current
and next generation mobile networks. In fact, with both our theoretical and practical results we
show evidences that more than one third of the resources can be saved and even larger gain can
be achieved for data rate enhancements.Programa Oficial de Doctorado en IngenierÃa TelemáticaPresidente: Albert Banchs Roca.- Presidente: Pablo Serrano Yañez-Mingot.- Secretario: Jorge OrtÃn Gracia.- Vocal: Guevara Noubi
