    Bellman Error Based Feature Generation using Random Projections on Sparse Spaces

    We address the problem of automatic generation of features for value function approximation. Bellman Error Basis Functions (BEBFs) have been shown to improve the error of policy evaluation with function approximation, with a convergence rate similar to that of value iteration. We propose a simple, fast and robust algorithm based on random projections to generate BEBFs for sparse feature spaces. We provide a finite sample analysis of the proposed method, and prove that projections logarithmic in the dimension of the original space are enough to guarantee contraction in the error. Empirical results demonstrate the strength of this method

    Stacked Auto Encoder Based Deep Reinforcement Learning for Online Resource Scheduling in Large-Scale MEC Networks

    An online resource scheduling framework is proposed for minimizing the sum of weighted task latency for all the Internet-of-Things (IoT) users, by optimizing offloading decision, transmission power, and resource allocation in the large-scale mobile-edge computing (MEC) system. Toward this end, a deep reinforcement learning (DRL)-based solution is proposed, which includes the following components. First, a related and regularized stacked autoencoder (2r-SAE) with unsupervised learning is applied to perform data compression and representation for high-dimensional channel quality information (CQI) data, which can reduce the state space for DRL. Second, we present an adaptive simulated annealing approach (ASA) as the action search method of DRL, in which an adaptive h -mutation is used to guide the search direction and an adaptive iteration is proposed to enhance the search efficiency during the DRL process. Third, a preserved and prioritized experience replay (2p-ER) is introduced to assist the DRL to train the policy network and find the optimal offloading policy. The numerical results are provided to demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can achieve near-optimal performance while significantly decreasing the computational time compared with existing benchmarks

    Toward Interpretable Deep Reinforcement Learning with Linear Model U-Trees

    Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) has achieved impressive success in many applications. A key component of many DRL models is a neural network representing a Q function, to estimate the expected cumulative reward following a state-action pair. The Q function neural network contains a lot of implicit knowledge about the RL problems, but often remains unexamined and uninterpreted. To our knowledge, this work develops the first mimic learning framework for Q functions in DRL. We introduce Linear Model U-trees (LMUTs) to approximate neural network predictions. An LMUT is learned using a novel on-line algorithm that is well-suited for an active play setting, where the mimic learner observes an ongoing interaction between the neural net and the environment. Empirical evaluation shows that an LMUT mimics a Q function substantially better than five baseline methods. The transparent tree structure of an LMUT facilitates understanding the network's learned knowledge by analyzing feature influence, extracting rules, and highlighting the super-pixels in image inputs.Comment: This paper is accepted by ECML-PKDD 201
