Unbalanced load flow with hybrid wavelet transform and support vector machine based Error-Correcting Output Codes for power quality disturbances classification including wind energy
Purpose. The most common methods to designa multiclass classification consist to determine a set of binary classifiers and to combine them. In this paper support vector machine with Error-Correcting Output Codes (ECOC-SVM) classifier is proposed to classify and characterize the power qualitydisturbances such as harmonic distortion, voltage sag, and voltage swell include wind farms generator in power transmission systems. Firstly three phases unbalanced load flow analysis is executed to calculate difference electric network characteristics, levels of voltage, active and reactive power. After, discrete wavelet transform is combined with the probabilistic ECOC-SVM model to construct the classifier. Finally, the ECOC-SVM classifies and identifies the disturbance type according tothe energy deviation of the discrete wavelet transform. The proposedmethod gives satisfactory accuracy with 99.2% compared with well known methods and shows that each power quality disturbances has specific deviations from the pure sinusoidal waveform, this is good at recognizing and specifies the type of disturbance generated from the wind
power generator.
Submodular Load Clustering with Robust Principal Component Analysis
Traditional load analysis is facing challenges with the new electricity usage
patterns due to demand response as well as increasing deployment of distributed
generations, including photovoltaics (PV), electric vehicles (EV), and energy
storage systems (ESS). At the transmission system, despite of irregular load
behaviors at different areas, highly aggregated load shapes still share similar
characteristics. Load clustering is to discover such intrinsic patterns and
provide useful information to other load applications, such as load forecasting
and load modeling. This paper proposes an efficient submodular load clustering
method for transmission-level load areas. Robust principal component analysis
(R-PCA) firstly decomposes the annual load profiles into low-rank components
and sparse components to extract key features. A novel submodular cluster
center selection technique is then applied to determine the optimal cluster
centers through constructed similarity graph. Following the selection results,
load areas are efficiently assigned to different clusters for further load
analysis and applications. Numerical results obtained from PJM load demonstrate
the effectiveness of the proposed approach.Comment: Accepted by 2019 IEEE PES General Meeting, Atlanta, G

Fault Location in Power Distribution Systems via Deep Graph Convolutional Networks
This paper develops a novel graph convolutional network (GCN) framework for
fault location in power distribution networks. The proposed approach integrates
multiple measurements at different buses while taking system topology into
account. The effectiveness of the GCN model is corroborated by the IEEE 123 bus
benchmark system. Simulation results show that the GCN model significantly
outperforms other widely-used machine learning schemes with very high fault
location accuracy. In addition, the proposed approach is robust to measurement
noise and data loss errors. Data visualization results of two competing neural
networks are presented to explore the mechanism of GCN's superior performance.
A data augmentation procedure is proposed to increase the robustness of the
model under various levels of noise and data loss errors. Further experiments
show that the model can adapt to topology changes of distribution networks and
perform well with a limited number of measured buses.Comment: Accepcted by IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communicatio
High Voltage Insulator Surface Evaluation Using Image Processing
High voltage insulators are widely deployed in power systems to isolate the
live- and dead-part of overhead lines as well as to support the power line
conductors mechanically. Permanent, secure and safe operation of power
transmission lines require that the high voltage insulators are inspected and
monitor, regularly. Severe environment conditions will influence insulator
surface and change creepage distance. Consequently, power utilities and
transmission companies face significant problem in operation due to insulator
damage or contamination. In this study, a new technique is developed for
real-time inspection of insulator and estimating the snow, ice and water over
the insulator surface which can be a potential risk of operation breakdown. To
examine the proposed system, practical experiment is conducted using ceramic
insulator for capturing the images with snow, ice and wet surface conditions.
Gabor and Standard deviation filters are utilized for image feature extraction.
The best achieved recognition accuracy rate was 87% using statistical approach
the Standard deviation.Comment: 2017 International Symposium on Electrical Insulating Materials,

Diagnosis of Combination Faults in a Planetary Gearbox using a Modulation Signal Bispectrum based Sideband Estimator
This paper presents a novel method for diagnosing combination faults in planetary gearboxes. Vibration signals measured on the gearbox housing exhibit complicated characteristics because of multiple modulations of concurrent excitation sources, signal paths and noise. To separate these modulations accurately, a modulation signal bispectrum based sideband estimator (MSB-SE) developed recently is used to achieve a sparse representation for the complicated signal contents, which allows effective enhancement of various sidebands for accurate diagnostic information. Applying the proposed method to diagnose an industrial planetary gearbox which coexists both bearing faults and gear faults shows that the different severities of the faults can be separated reliably under different load conditions, confirming the superior performance of this MSB-SE based diagnosis scheme
