Photophysics of indole upon x-ray absorption
A photofragmentation study of gas-phase indole (CHN) upon
single-photon ionization at a photon energy of 420 eV is presented. Indole was
primarily inner-shell ionized at its nitrogen and carbon orbitals.
Electrons and ions were measured in coincidence by means of velocity map
imaging. The angular relationship between ionic fragments is discussed along
with the possibility to use the angle-resolved coincidence detection to perform
experiments on molecules that are strongly oriented in their recoil-frame. The
coincident measurement of electrons and ions revealed
fragmentation-pathway-dependent electron spectra, linking the structural
fragmentation dynamics to different electronic excitations. Evidence for
photoelectron-impact self-ionization was observed.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figure
Visual and computational analysis of structure-activity relationships in high-throughput screening data
Novel analytic methods are required to assimilate the large volumes of structural and bioassay data generated by combinatorial chemistry and high-throughput screening programmes in the pharmaceutical and agrochemical industries. Perceptual-based textures for scene labeling: a bottom-up and a top-down approach
Due to the semantic gap, the automatic interpretation of digital images is a very challenging task. Both the segmentation and classification are intricate because of the high variation of the data. Therefore, the application of appropriate features is of utter importance. This paper presents biologically inspired texture features for material classification and interpreting outdoor scenery images. Experiments show that the presented texture features obtain the best classification results for material recognition compared to other well-known texture features, with an average classification rate of 93.0%. For scene analysis, both a bottom-up and top-down strategy are employed to bridge the semantic gap. At first, images are segmented into regions based on the perceptual texture and next, a semantic label is calculated for these regions. Since this emerging interpretation is still error prone, domain knowledge is ingested to achieve a more accurate description of the depicted scene. By applying both strategies, 91.9% of the pixels from outdoor scenery images obtained a correct label
Scalable aggregation predictive analytics: a query-driven machine learning approach
We introduce a predictive modeling solution that provides high quality predictive analytics over aggregation queries in Big Data environments. Our predictive methodology is generally applicable in environments in which large-scale data owners may or may not restrict access to their data and allow only aggregation operators like COUNT to be executed over their data. In this context, our methodology is based on historical queries and their answers to accurately predict ad-hoc queries’ answers. We focus on the widely used set-cardinality, i.e., COUNT, aggregation query, as COUNT is a fundamental operator for both internal data system optimizations and for aggregation-oriented data exploration and predictive analytics. We contribute a novel, query-driven Machine Learning (ML) model whose goals are to: (i) learn the query-answer space from past issued queries, (ii) associate the query space with local linear regression & associative function estimators, (iii) define query similarity, and (iv) predict the cardinality of the answer set of unseen incoming queries, referred to the Set Cardinality Prediction (SCP) problem. Our ML model incorporates incremental ML algorithms for ensuring high quality prediction results. The significance of contribution lies in that it (i) is the only query-driven solution applicable over general Big Data environments, which include restricted-access data, (ii) offers incremental learning adjusted for arriving ad-hoc queries, which is well suited for query-driven data exploration, and (iii) offers a performance (in terms of scalability, SCP accuracy, processing time, and memory requirements) that is superior to data-centric approaches. We provide a comprehensive performance evaluation of our model evaluating its sensitivity, scalability and efficiency for quality predictive analytics. In addition, we report on the development and incorporation of our ML model in Spark showing its superior performance compared to the Spark’s COUNT method
Be It Unresolved: Measuring Time Delays from Lensed Supernovae
Gravitationally lensed Type Ia supernovae may be the next frontier in cosmic
probes, able to deliver independent constraints on dark energy, spatial
curvature, and the Hubble constant. Measurements of time delays between the
multiple images become more incisive due to the standardized candle nature of
the source, monitoring for months rather than years, and partial immunity to
microlensing. While currently extremely rare, hundreds of such systems should
be detected by upcoming time domain surveys. Even more will have the images
spatially unresolved, with the observed lightcurve a superposition of time
delayed image fluxes. We investigate whether unresolved images can be
recognized as lensed sources given only lightcurve information, and whether
time delays can be extracted robustly. We develop a method that successfully
identifies such systems, with a false positive rate of , and
measures the time delays with a completeness of and with a bias
