Expediting Support for Social Learning with Behavior Modeling
An important research problem for Educational Data Mining is to expedite the
cycle of data leading to the analysis of student learning processes and the
improvement of support for those processes. For this goal in the context of
social interaction in learning, we propose a three-part pipeline that includes
data infrastructure, learning process analysis with behavior modeling, and
intervention for support. We also describe an application of the pipeline to
data from a social learning platform to investigate appropriate goal-setting
behavior as a qualification of role models. Students following appropriate goal
setters persisted longer in the course, showed increased engagement in hands-on
course activities, and were more likely to review previously covered materials
as they continued through the course. To foster this beneficial social
interaction among students, we propose a social recommender system and show
potential for assisting students in interacting with qualified goal setters as
role models. We discuss how this generalizable pipeline can be adapted for

SEKE2018 will also be dedicated in memory of Professor Lofti Zadeh, a great scholar, pioneer and leader in fuzzy sets theory and soft computing.
The conference aims at bringing together experts in software engineering and knowledge engineering to discuss on relevant results in either software engineering or knowledge engineering or both. Special emphasis will be put on the transference of methods between both domains. The theme this year is soft computing in software engineering & knowledge engineering. Informatics: the fuel for pharmacometric analysis
The current informal practice of pharmacometrics as a combination art and science makes it hard to appreciate the role that informatics can and should play in the future of the discipline and to comprehend the gaps that exist because of its absence. The development of pharmacometric informatics has important implications for expediting decision making and for improving the reliability of decisions made in model-based development. We argue that well-defined informatics for pharmacometrics can lead to much needed improvements in the efficiency, effectiveness, and reliability of the pharmacometrics process.
The purpose of this paper is to provide a description of the pervasive yet often poorly appreciated role of informatics in improving the process of data assembly, a critical task in the delivery of pharmacometric analysis results. First, we provide a brief description of the pharmacometric analysis process. Second, we describe the business processes required to create analysis-ready data sets for the pharmacometrician.
Third, we describe selected informatic elements required to support the pharmacometrics and data assembly processes. Finally, we offer specific suggestions for performing a systematic analysis of existing challenges as an approach to defi ning the next generation of pharmacometric informatics

How Committed Individuals Shape Social Dynamics: A Survey on Coordination Games and Social Dilemma Games
Committed individuals, who features steadfast dedication to advocating strong
beliefs, values, and preferences, have garnered much attention across
statistical physics, social science, and computer science. This survey delves
into the profound impact of committed individuals on social dynamics that
emerge from coordination games and social dilemma games. Through separate
examinations of their influence on coordination, including social conventions
and color coordination games, and social dilemma games, including one-shot
settings, repeated settings, and vaccination games, this survey reveals the
significant role committed individuals play in shaping social dynamics. Their
contributions range from accelerating or overturning social conventions to
addressing cooperation dilemmas and expediting solutions for color coordination
and vaccination issues. Furthermore, the survey outlines three promising
directions for future research: conducting human behavior experiments for
empirical validation, leveraging advanced large language models as proxies for
committed individuals in complex scenarios, and addressing potential negative
impacts of committed individuals
Water resources management in a homogenizing world: Averting the Growth and Underinvestment trajectory
Biotic homogenization, a de facto symptom of a global biodiversity crisis, underscores the urgency of reforming water resources management to focus on the health and viability of ecosystems. Global population and economic growth, coupled with inadequate investment in maintenance of ecological systems, threaten to degrade environmental integrity and ecosystem services that support the global socioeconomic system, indicative of a system governed by the Growth and Underinvestment (G&U) archetype. Water resources management is linked to biotic homogenization and degradation of system integrity through alteration of water systems, ecosystem dynamics, and composition of the biota. Consistent with the G&U archetype, water resources planning primarily treats ecological considerations as exogenous constraints rather than integral, dynamic, and responsive parts of the system. It is essential that the ecological considerations be made objectives of water resources development plans to facilitate the analysis of feedbacks and potential trade-offs between socioeconomic gains and ecological losses. We call for expediting a shift to ecosystem-based management of water resources, which requires a better understanding of the dynamics and links between water resources management actions, ecological side-effects, and associated long-term ramifications for sustainability. To address existing knowledge gaps, models that include dynamics and estimated thresholds for regime shifts or ecosystem degradation need to be developed. Policy levers for implementation of ecosystem-based water resources management include shifting away from growth-oriented supply management, better demand management, increased public awareness, and institutional reform that promotes adaptive and transdisciplinary management approaches
