The Advanced Expander Test Bed (AETB) is a key element in NASA's Space Chemical Engine Technology Program for development and demonstration of expander cycle oxygen/hydrogen engine and advanced component technologies applicable to space engines as well as launch vehicle upper stage engines. The AETB will be used to validate the high pressure expander cycle concept, study system interactions, and conduct studies of advanced mission focused components and new health monitoring techniques in an engine system environment. The split expander cycle AETB will operate at combustion chamber pressures up to 1200 psia with propellant flow rates equivalent to 20,000 lbf vacuum thrust

Orbital Transfer Vehicle (OTV) engine study. Phase A: Extension
An orbital transfer vehicle OTV engine study program was undertaken to provide additional expander and staged combustion cycle data in the design definition of the OTV engine. The proposed program effort optimizes the expander cycle engine concept (consistent with identified OTV engine requirements), investigates the feasibility of kitting the staged combustion cycle engine to provide extended low thrust operation, and conducts in-depth analysis of development risk, crew safety, and reliability for both cycles. Additional tasks to establish the cost of a 10K thrust expander cycle engine and to render support of OTV systems study contractors are reported

Process analysis of pressurized oxy-coal power cycle for carbon capture application integrated with liquid air power generation and binary cycle engines
In this paper, the thermodynamic advantage of integrating liquid air power generation (LAPG) process and binary cycle waste heat recovery technology to a standalone pressurized oxy-coal combustion supercritical steam power generation cycle is investigated through modeling and simulation using Aspen Plus® simulation software version 8.4. The study shows that the integration of LAPG process and the use of binary cycle heat engine which convert waste heat from compressor exhaust to electricity, in a standalone pressurized oxy-coal combustion supercritical steam power generation cycle improves the thermodynamic efficiency of the pressurized oxy-coal process. The analysis indicates that such integration can give about 12–15% increase in thermodynamic efficiency when compared with a standalone pressurized oxy-coal process with or without CO2 capture. It was also found that in a pressurized oxy-coal process, it is better to pump the liquid oxygen from the cryogenic ASU to a very high pressure prior to vapourization in the cryogenic ASU main heat exchanger and subsequently expand the gaseous oxygen to the required combustor pressure than either compressing the atmospheric gaseous oxygen produced from the cryogenic ASU directly to the combustor pressure or pumping the liquid oxygen to the combustor pressure prior to vapourization in the cryogenic ASU main heat exchanger. The power generated from the compressor heat in the flue gas purification, carbon capture and compression unit using binary cycle heat engine was also found to offset about 65% of the power consumed in the flue gas cleaning and compression process. The work presented here shows that there is a synergistic and thermodynamic advantage of utilizing the nitrogen-rich stream from the cryogenic ASU of an oxy-fuel power generation process for power generation instead of discarding it as a waste stream
Comparison between single and cascaded organic Rankine cycle systems accounting for the effects of expansion volume ratio on expander performance
Compared to single-stage organic Rankine cycle (ORC) systems, cascaded ORC systems, in which a high-temperature topping cycle and low-temperature bottoming cycle are coupled together, could have advantages in terms of removing the potential for sub-atmospheric condensation conditions and improving expander performance as the expansion process is effectively divided across two stages. Moreover, reducing the expansion volume ratio could facilitate the use of volumetric expanders, such as twin-screw expanders, which, in turn, could facilitate two-phase expansion to be utilised in one, or both, of the cycles. The aim of this paper is to compare single-stage and cascaded ORC systems, accounting for the effect of the expander volume ratio on expander performance. To investigate this, thermodynamic models for single-stage and cascaded ORC systems are developed, which include variable efficiency expander models for both radial turbines and twin-screw expanders that can estimate the effect of the expansion volume ratio on the expander isentropic efficiency. Using this model, three different scenarios are compared for different temperature heat-source temperatures, namely: (i) single-stage ORC systems with vapour-phase expansion obtained using a turboexpander; (ii) single-stage ORC systems operating with a twin-screw expander, with the possibility for two-phase expansion; and (iii) cascaded cycles with either vapour- or two-phase expansion. The results from this comparison are used to identify applications where cascaded ORC systems could offer performance benefits
A 15 kWe (nominal) solar thermal-electric power conversion concept definition study: Steam Rankin reciprocator system
A conceptual design of a 3600 rpm reciprocation expander was developed for maximum thermal input power of 80 kW. The conceptual design covered two engine configurations; a single cylinder design for simple cycle operation and a two cylinder design for reheat cycle operation. The reheat expander contains a high pressure cylinder and a low pressure cylinder with steam being reheated to the initial inlet temperature after expansion in the high pressure cylinder. Power generation is accomplished with a three-phase induction motor coupled directly to the expander and connected electrically to the public utility power grid. The expander, generator, water pump and control system weigh 297 kg and are dish mounted. The steam condenser, water tank and accessory pumps are ground based. Maximum heat engine efficiency is 33 percent: maximum power conversion efficiency is 30 percent. Total cost is 138 per kW of maximum output power
ORCSim: a generalized Organic Rankine cycle simulation tool
An increasing interest in organic Rankine cycle (ORC) technology has led to numerous simulation and
optimization studies. In the open-literature different modeling approaches can be found, but general software
tools available to the academic/industrial community are limited. A generalized ORC simulation
tool, named ORCSim, is proposed in this paper. The framework is developed using object-oriented programming
that easily allows improvements and future extensions. Currently two cycle configurations are
implemented, i.e. a basic ORC and an ORC with liquid-flooded expansion. The software architecture,
the thermo-physical property wrappers, the component library and the solution algorithm are discussed
with particular emphasis on the ORC with liquid-flooded expansion. A thorough validation both at component
and cycle levels is proposed by considering the aforementioned cycle architectures
