    Examining Online Switching Costs over Search Product and Experience Product Contexts

    Many Internet vendors have realized the importance of “locking-in” online customers in order to ensure their profitability. For this reason, many researchers have paid attention to the formation of switching costs which acting as a barrier that prevent customers from easily changing from one vendor to another. Erection of switching barriers will represent an important strategy for locking in customers and increasing their willingness to pay price premium. This study aims to examine the relationships among customer satisfaction, perceived value, relative advantage, and switching costs. This study further examines the effect of switching costs on customer’s willingness to pay more. This study collects data and test the research model over two contexts, search product context and experience product context. The empirical results show the key role of switching costs in leading to willingness to pay more and the relationships among the four constructs. The theoretical and practical implications of this study are then discussed

    Effects of user experience on user resistance to change to the voice user interface of an in‑vehicle infotainment system: Implications for platform and standards competition

    This study examines the effects of user experience on user resistance to change—particularly, on the relationship between user resistance to change and its antecedents (i.e. switching costs and perceived value) in the context of the voice user interface of an in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) system. This research offers several salient findings. First, it shows that user experience positively moderates the relationship between uncertainty costs (one type of switching cost) and user resistance. It also negatively moderates the association between perceived value and user resistance. Second, the research test results demonstrate that users with a high degree of prior experience with the voice user interface of other smart devices exhibit low user resistance to change to the voice user interface in an IVI system. Third, we show that three types of switching costs (transition costs, in particular) may directly influence users to resist a change to the voice user interface. Fourth, our test results empirically demonstrate that both switching costs and perceived value affect user resistance to change in the context of an IVI system, which differs from the traditional IS research setting (i.e. enterprise systems). These findings may guide not only platform leaders in designing user interfaces, user experiences, and marketing strategies, but also firms that want to defend themselves from platform envelopment while devising defensive strategies in platform and standards competition

    Critical review of the e-loyalty literature: a purchase-centred framework

    Over the last few years, the concept of online loyalty has been examined extensively in the literature, and it remains a topic of constant inquiry for both academics and marketing managers. The tremendous development of the Internet for both marketing and e-commerce settings, in conjunction with the growing desire of consumers to purchase online, has promoted two main outcomes: (a) increasing numbers of Business-to-Customer companies running businesses online and (b) the development of a variety of different e-loyalty research models. However, current research lacks a systematic review of the literature that provides a general conceptual framework on e-loyalty, which would help managers to understand their customers better, to take advantage of industry-related factors, and to improve their service quality. The present study is an attempt to critically synthesize results from multiple empirical studies on e-loyalty. Our findings illustrate that 62 instruments for measuring e-loyalty are currently in use, influenced predominantly by Zeithaml et al. (J Marketing. 1996;60(2):31-46) and Oliver (1997; Satisfaction: a behavioral perspective on the consumer. New York: McGraw Hill). Additionally, we propose a new general conceptual framework, which leads to antecedents dividing e-loyalty on the basis of the action of purchase into pre-purchase, during-purchase and after-purchase factors. To conclude, a number of managerial implementations are suggested in order to help marketing managers increase their customers’ e-loyalty by making crucial changes in each purchase stage

    The Relationship between Buyer and a B2B e-Marketplace: Cooperation Determinants in an Electronic Market Context

    In this article, the authors argue that cooperation may be achieved by adding technology dimensions to the core product. Given the growing importance of real time information exchange and interactivity, a better understanding of the use of technology to the establishment and development of the buyer-supplier cooperative relationships is essential for knowledge advancement. Using a sample of nearly 400 SMEs purchasing managers, this paper reveals that in an electronic market context, cooperation is positively affected by termination costs, supplier policies and practices, communication and information exchange, and negatively affected by product prices and opportunistic behavior.     Exploring Online Repeat Purchase Intentions: The Role of Habit

    By focusing on online stores, this study investigates the repeat purchase intention of experienced online buyers. Prior research on online behavior continuance models perceived usefulness, trust, satisfaction, and perceived value as the major determinants of continued adoption or loyalty, overlooking the important role of habit. Building on previous work in other disciplines, we define habit in the context of online shopping as the extent to which buyers tend to shop online automatically because of learning. Using recent work on the continued usage of IS (IS continuance) and repeat purchase, we have developed a model suggesting that repeat purchase intention is not only a consequence of trust and switching cost, but also of habit. In particular, in our research model, we propose that online shopping habit moderate the influence of trust such that its importance in determining repeat purchase intention decreases as the online shopping behavior takes on a more habitual nature. Integrating prior research on habit, IS continuance, and repeat purchase further, we suggest how antecedents of repeat purchase intention relate to drivers of habitualization. Data collected from 462 of Yahoo!Kimo shopping center’s customers provide strong support for the research model. Results indicate that higher level of habit deflated trust’s effect on repeat purchase intention. The data also show that satisfaction and familiarity are key to habit formation and thus relevant in the context of online repeat purchase

Despite this, there have been very few scholarly findings about which services and characteristics make a Web site a portal and which dimensions determine the customers’ evaluation of the portal’s quality. Taking the example of financial portals, the authors develop a theoretical framework of the Web portal quality construct by determining the number and nature of corresponding dimensions, which are: security and trust, basic services quality, cross-buying services quality, added values, transaction support and relationship quality. Researchers have recently started to study information technology (IT) switching. However, no studies have concentrated on the unique context of mobile applications. Mobile application switching differs from the switching behavior related to many other IT products and services because of the highlighted role of alternatives, beta versions, updates, reviews, and users’ spontaneous behavior. To address this gap, we develop a mobile-specific model by using a qualitative research approach. As a theoretical contribution, we introduce trialing behavior as a predecessor of switching behavior and present six new behavioral antecedents for them. As practical implications, we suggest ways for mobile application providers and developers to reduce user churn. We present a model of the effects of multiple team membership (MTM) on learning and productivity via the mediating processes of individual context switching, team temporal misalignment, and intra-organizational connectivity. These effects are curvilinear, with learning and productivity peaking at moderate levels of these mediating processes
