On the Sample Complexity of Multichannel Frequency Estimation via Convex Optimization
The use of multichannel data in line spectral estimation (or frequency
estimation) is common for improving the estimation accuracy in array
processing, structural health monitoring, wireless communications, and more.
Recently proposed atomic norm methods have attracted considerable attention due
to their provable superiority in accuracy, flexibility and robustness compared
with conventional approaches. In this paper, we analyze atomic norm
minimization for multichannel frequency estimation from noiseless compressive
data, showing that the sample size per channel that ensures exact estimation
decreases with the increase of the number of channels under mild conditions. In
particular, given channels, order samples per channel, selected randomly from
equispaced samples, suffice to ensure with high probability exact
estimation of frequencies that are normalized and mutually separated by at
least . Numerical results are provided corroborating our analysis.Comment: 14 pages, double column, to appear in IEEE Trans. Information Theor
3D Shape Estimation from 2D Landmarks: A Convex Relaxation Approach
We investigate the problem of estimating the 3D shape of an object, given a
set of 2D landmarks in a single image. To alleviate the reconstruction
ambiguity, a widely-used approach is to confine the unknown 3D shape within a
shape space built upon existing shapes. While this approach has proven to be
successful in various applications, a challenging issue remains, i.e., the
joint estimation of shape parameters and camera-pose parameters requires to
solve a nonconvex optimization problem. The existing methods often adopt an
alternating minimization scheme to locally update the parameters, and
consequently the solution is sensitive to initialization. In this paper, we
propose a convex formulation to address this problem and develop an efficient
algorithm to solve the proposed convex program. We demonstrate the exact
recovery property of the proposed method, its merits compared to alternative
methods, and the applicability in human pose and car shape estimation.Comment: In Proceedings of CVPR 201
A Compact Formulation for the Mixed-Norm Minimization Problem
Parameter estimation from multiple measurement vectors (MMVs) is a
fundamental problem in many signal processing applications, e.g., spectral
analysis and direction-of- arrival estimation. Recently, this problem has been
address using prior information in form of a jointly sparse signal structure. A
prominent approach for exploiting joint sparsity considers mixed-norm
minimization in which, however, the problem size grows with the number of
measurements and the desired resolution, respectively. In this work we derive
an equivalent, compact reformulation of the mixed-norm
minimization problem which provides new insights on the relation between
different existing approaches for jointly sparse signal reconstruction. The
reformulation builds upon a compact parameterization, which models the
row-norms of the sparse signal representation as parameters of interest,
resulting in a significant reduction of the MMV problem size. Given the sparse
vector of row-norms, the jointly sparse signal can be computed from the MMVs in
closed form. For the special case of uniform linear sampling, we present an
extension of the compact formulation for gridless parameter estimation by means
of semidefinite programming. Furthermore, we derive in this case from our
compact problem formulation the exact equivalence between the
mixed-norm minimization and the atomic-norm minimization. Additionally, for the
case of irregular sampling or a large number of samples, we present a low
complexity, grid-based implementation based on the coordinate descent method
