A computational framework for aesthetical navigation in musical search space
Paper presented at 3rd AISB symposium on computational creativity, AISB 2016, 4-6th April, Sheffield. Abstract. This article addresses aspects of an ongoing project in the generation of artificial Persian (-like) music. Liquid Persian Music software (LPM) is a cellular automata based audio generator. In this paper LPM is discussed from the view point of future potentials of algorithmic composition and creativity. Liquid Persian Music is a creative tool, enabling exploration of emergent audio through new dimensions of music composition. Various configurations of the system produce different voices which resemble musical motives in many respects. Aesthetical measurements are determined by Zipf’s law in an evolutionary environment. Arranging these voices together for producing a musical corpus can be considered as a search problem in the LPM outputs space of musical possibilities. On this account, the issues toward defining the search space for LPM is studied throughout this paper

The telematic dress: Evolving garments and distributed proprioception in streaming media and fashion performance
Centered around several short films from streaming performances created in 2005, this paper
explores new ideas for movement technologies and garment design in an arts and digital research
context. The "telematic dress" project, developed at the DAP Lab in Nottingham, involves
transdisciplinary intersections between fashion and live performance, interactive system architecture,
electronic textiles, wearable technologies, choreography, and anthropology.
The concept on an evolving garment design that is materialized (moved) in live performance
originates from DAP Lab's experimentation with telematics and distributed media (http://art.ntu.ac.
uk/performance_research/birringer/dap.htm] addressing "connective tissues" through a study of
perception/proprioception in the wearer (tactile sensory processing) and the dancer/designer/viewer
relationship. This study is conducted as cross-cultural communication with online performance
partners in Europe, the US, Brazil and Japan. The inter-active space is predicated on transcultural
questions: how does the movement with an evolving design and wearable interactive sensors travel,
how does movement - and capturing of movement - allow the design to emerge toward a garment
statement, and how are bodies-in-relation-to sensory fabrics affected by the multidimensional
kinesthetics of a media-rich, responsive environment
Towards the Evolution of Novel Vertical-Axis Wind Turbines
Renewable and sustainable energy is one of the most important challenges
currently facing mankind. Wind has made an increasing contribution to the
world's energy supply mix, but still remains a long way from reaching its full
potential. In this paper, we investigate the use of artificial evolution to
design vertical-axis wind turbine prototypes that are physically instantiated
and evaluated under approximated wind tunnel conditions. An artificial neural
network is used as a surrogate model to assist learning and found to reduce the
number of fabrications required to reach a higher aerodynamic efficiency,
resulting in an important cost reduction. Unlike in other approaches, such as
computational fluid dynamics simulations, no mathematical formulations are used
and no model assumptions are made.Comment: 14 pages, 11 figure

Dynamic literature mapping : typography in screen-based media
This paper chronicles the development of a visual map representing a literature search on key theorists and thinkers in two principal topics: Typography and New Media. Its aim is to visualise and facilitate conceptual connections between key ideas and philosophies across disciplines. This literature map was drawn up by reviewing available influential literature within these topics. Related categories were later added and a further series of literature searches were conducted to build references in each topic. This on-going cyclical process serves to construct a comprehensive contextual map of knowledge. The benefit of the map is twofold. Primarily, aiding the researcher to navigate and understand complex layers of information. Secondly, allowing the researcher to present and share representations of knowledge. The clarity of the representation is crucial in eliciting the participation of fellow design researchers and practitioners to the development and growth of the literature map
Liquid Architecture 8 Sydney
Background Liquid Architecture, Australia's national festival of sound arts, made a successful Sydney debut in 2005, developing audiences for sound art through diverse, high quality programming. 2006 saw the challenge of growing the festival while maintaining quality and critical focus. Contribution In addition to previously included forms such as musique concrete and free improvisation, Liquid Architecture 7 Sydney expanded its policy of developing audiences through inclusivity by embracing sound poetry (Amanda Stewart), the contemporary classical world of New Music (composers Ros Bandt, Garth Paine and Michael Atherton) as well as new international connections, through the 'Swiss Australian Collectibles', an international project between Swiss composers and Melbourne musicians. The program of artist talks was also expanded to include panel discussions and instrument building workshops and masterclasses. Significance Tony Osborne, writing in RealTime, said that the festival "set up exciting juxtapositions and provoked plenty of interesting debate" which means that the festival achieved its curatorial goals, building on its previous success and continuing to attract and develop audiences with new work and opportunities to engage with sound in its many forms
