    Dynamic literature mapping : typography in screen-based media

    This paper chronicles the development of a visual map representing a literature search on key theorists and thinkers in two principal topics: Typography and New Media. Its aim is to visualise and facilitate conceptual connections between key ideas and philosophies across disciplines. This literature map was drawn up by reviewing available influential literature within these topics. Related categories were later added and a further series of literature searches were conducted to build references in each topic. This on-going cyclical process serves to construct a comprehensive contextual map of knowledge. The benefit of the map is twofold. Primarily, aiding the researcher to navigate and understand complex layers of information. Secondly, allowing the researcher to present and share representations of knowledge. The clarity of the representation is crucial in eliciting the participation of fellow design researchers and practitioners to the development and growth of the literature map

    This project aimed to develop and evaluate "Realm Paradox," a video game designed to introduce the concept of the 4th dimension to a broad audience. The game had educational components and went through a rigorous playtesting procedure to see how well it will help players better grasp the fourth dimension. Through the analysis of playtest data and participant feedback, it was determined that the game successfully improved players' comprehension of the 4th dimension. Overall, "Realm Paradox" demonstrated its potential as an engaging and educational tool for exploring higher dimensional concepts

    Escaping Flatland: Designing data visualizations in augmented reality

    Augmented reality is becoming increasingly common in digital news, as nearly every major newsroom has released AR-driven stories in recent years. For this technology to become more than a fad, AR creators will need to pay attention to the user experience and find ways of telling stories that people will understand and remember. This study aims to solve a small part of that challenge, through a user-testing study of data visualizations in augmented reality. Drawing upon the 2D data visualization theories of Edward Tufte, Jaques Bertin, and others, three visualizations were created in AR and examined using user testing methodologies set out by previous AR researchers, as well as user experience researchers like Nielsen and Norman. Twenty-three undergraduate students viewed the augmented reality in the context of a sample news article, then answered comprehension questions and were interviewed about their experiences. Their reactions showed that AR design has particular complications to be careful of: users frequently expressed confusion about objects being occluded behind each other, labels being hard to read, and scales being difficult to measure. All their observations were condensed into five key best practices for AR development: “Keep all items in view,” “Optimize for macro/micro compositions,” “Assume users won’t move around,” “Use labels sparingly,” and “Allow opportunities to learn and fail.” With these guidelines, future development of AR data visualizations can continue to improve user experiences and help promote more widespread adoption of this new technology.Bachelor of Art

Carbon Footprint Calculator visually represents the quantity of greenhouse gases individuals generate and quantifies each state\u27s carbon usage. It collects data regarding people\u27s carbon usage as far as transportation and electricity. This project\u27s goal involves using data visualization to make important and complex information more accessible and less boring. resulting in an informed user and consequently, a more responsible citizen

    Designing Restaurant Digital Menus to Enhance User Experience

    Menu is a primary marketing and communication tools in the restaurants industry. Business-to-consumer digital devices are widely used in both daily life and business, especially the hospitality industry. Menus have a history of 260 years and now more restaurants are revising menus and starting to use digital menus. Marketing research and reports from Nation\u27s Restaurant and New York Times show that digital menu helps restaurants to increase profit by making food more accessible, selling more and requiring less labor in comparison to the traditional printed paper menu. The design principles and user interface are different in print menu and digital menus and we need design guidelines for new generation of digital menus. Digital menus also offer great opportunities of customization and personalization for using interaction to enhance user experience.There is little research that has been done in the graphic design and human computer interaction field for digital menu design. It seems that digital menus create a more effective and flexible way of reading and ordering while at the same time people have different experiences and expectations for using digital menus with interaction, not to mention personalization and customization will create better user experience. Currently no specific research shows how typography, orientation, layout and columns work for digital menus; what the efficient ways of arranging all the elements in digital menus are, and how images, graphic elements and descriptions would help to communicate with viewers
