What Should we Expect of 'Erasmus Generations'?
The Erasmus programme promotes student mobility within the EU largely on the assumption that mobile students will become more pro-European. This article presents the results of a panel study of Erasmus students which suggest that, while former Erasmus students may be more pro-European than their peers, this is because students who choose to take part are already more pro-European. The attitudes to Europe and voting preferences of Erasmus students do not seem to diverge from their non-mobile peers while they are abroad. Although the programme may have other benefits, expecting it to create Europhile ‘Erasmus generations’ seems unrealistic

Gender gap in the ERASMUS mobility program
Studying abroad has become very popular among students. The ERASMUS mobility
program is one of the largest international student exchange programs in the
world, which has supported already more than three million participants since
1987. We analyzed the mobility pattern within this program in 2011-12 and found
a gender gap across countries and subject areas. Namely, for almost all
participating countries, female students are over-represented in the ERASMUS
program when compared to the entire population of tertiary students. The same
tendency is observed across different subject areas. We also found a gender
asymmetry in the geographical distribution of hosting institutions, with a bias
of male students in Scandinavian countries. However, a detailed analysis
reveals that this latter asymmetry is rather driven by subject and consistent
with the distribution of gender ratios among subject areas
Virtual Erasmus - A new chance not only for Europe
Virtual Mobility among two or more educational institutions offers students a virtual trip abroad. There is an opportunity to acquire a number of ECTS-points at one of the foreign partner institutions or through a joint activity which are counted to the student’s degree at his/her home university. This paper is based on the research conducted among ERASMUS coordinators within the EU. The research was part of the MoreVM project which aims at facilitating the virtual mobility, encouraging participation and enhancing efficiency of virtual mobility in higher education. The central focus was on the position of the virtual mobility coordinator, if such exists. There will be an overview of the main research findings reflecting the present situation in managing the virtual mobility. We hope that sharing good experience including the MoreVM project results will increase the development of the virtual mobility which will get similar attention and success as Erasmus physical mobility. Fraction of clear skies above astronomical sites: a new analysis from the GOES12 satellite
Comparing the number of clear nights (cloud free) available for astronomical
observations is a critical task because it should be based on homogeneous
methodologies. Current data are mainly based on different judgements based on
observer logbooks or on different instruments. In this paper we present a new
homogeneous methodology on very different astronomical sites for modern optical
astronomy, in order to quantify the available night time fraction. The data are
extracted from night time GOES12 satellite infrared images and compared with
ground based conditions when available. In this analysis we introduce a wider
average matrix and 3-Bands correlation in order to reduce the noise and to
distinguish between clear and stable nights. Temporal data are used for the
classification. In the time interval 2007-2008 we found that the percentage of
the satellite clear nights is 88% at Paranal, 76% at La Silla, 72.5% at La
Palma, 59% at Mt. Graham and 86.5% at Tolonchar. The correlation analysis of
the three GOES12 infrared bands B3, B4 and B6 indicates that the fraction of
the stable nights is lower by 2% to 20% depending on the site
Language skills, peer rejection, and the development of externalizing behavior from kindergarten to fourth grade
Background: Children with poorer language skills are more likely to show externalizing behavior problems, as well as to become rejected by their peers. Peer rejection has also been found to affect the development of externalizing behavior. This study explored the role of peer rejection in the link between language skills and the development of externalizing behavior. Methods: Six hundred and fifteen (615) children were followed from kindergarten to grade 4. Receptive language skills were measured with the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test in grade 2. Teachers reported externalizing behavior and peer reports of social rejection were measured annually. Results: Children with poorer receptive language skills showed increasing externalizing behavior, while children with better receptive language skills showed decreases in externalizing behavior. Children with poorer receptive language skills experienced peer rejection most frequently. The link between receptive language skills and the development of externalizing behavior was mediated by the development of peer rejection. Findings suggested that this mediational link applied mostly to boys. Conclusion: Children with poorer language skills are at increased risk of becoming rejected by mainstream peers, which adds to the development of externalizing behavior. © 2010 The Authors.
