Stop decisions in software development projects - The development of a decision-support-model based on key figures
In times of globalization, short product life-cycles and fast technical progress projects gain in importance in all industries â so in the software industry. Practically every company these days has to put in great efforts into project management to meet the increasing requirements, select the right projects and execute these chosen projects well. A serious problem in this context is that circumstances and key success factors may change during the entire course of the project. As a result the increase of costs and/or the decrease of gains may be sufficiently serious to stop the project. The question whether a running project should be continued or stopped under changed conditions is one of the key issues in project management. At present this key-question, however, is neglected both in general project management and in software development projects. Therefore the main objective of my research was to develop a generic model to support decision-making in this context. The model can be seen as a framework, which is designed for use in different types of software development projects and different data availability. It focuses the integration of key risk factors in the estimation of remaining project costs and gains in order to give a suitable decision support
