Creating and affording ensembleness through the integration of movement in vocal ensemble compositions:Portfolio of compositions and supporting commentary

This portfolio comprises two individual compositions and three cycles for vocal ensemble, totalling nineteen pieces. These works integrate movement and interactions among performers and with the audience as key structural and technical elements within the creative process. Movement is treated as an inseparable medium from music, shaping both structure and sound. My aims are to explore:• The development of multidisciplinary music and movement compositions adaptable to professional and non-professional vocal ensembles, ensuring style and coherence.• Clear notation options that facilitate memorisation.• Training to develop ensemble cohesion, to achieve coherent and nuanced performances of these compositions without a conductor or clear cues.• The role of the composer-conductor in this practice.• The ensemble's comfort and practice as a real-time co-creator.My work focuses on developing ensembleness – a stronger sense of cohesion within the ensemble, along with a heightened awareness of spatial dynamics and creative possibilities – as core of my compositional approach, shifting from a theoretical framework to a performer-driven practice-based methodology. By promoting the ensemble's readiness and competence to perform beyond traditional practices, this approach to movement-based composition potentially dissolves the distinction between levels of expertise. This practice explores and compares conceptual, practical, and notational strategies from composers like Andy Ingamells, James Whittle, Jennifer Walshe, Meredith Monk, and Pauline Oliveros, alongside movement practitioners such as Dick McCaw, Émile Jaques-Dalcroze, Peter Brook, and Rudolf Laban. As a result, I strategically adopt colour coding and font sizing to aid memorisation in multidisciplinary works involving movement, developing movement and ensemble training exercises into performances, reflecting on their benefits and challenges. Discussions on memorisation practices support these findings and inform the portfolio's development. The performer-driven repertoire in this portfolio draws conclusions regarding the role of ensemble dynamics in shaping my compositional approach, aiming to develop strategies for the conceptual and practical advancement of multidisciplinary practice, leading to tangible performance improvements

    In Conversation in Apocalyptic Times

Undoubtedly one of the most prominent and most important Russian directors of the past two decades, Yury Butusov here refers to several landmarks of his artistic trajectory, gradually revealing a sense of oeuvre, of a body of work connected by a distinctive worldview. Not all of his productions of exceptional significance are cited here, and Flight (2015), at the Vakhtangov Theatre in Moscow, not having found its rightful place here, appears separately at the end. This Conversation, while intentionally taking a wide perspective, nevertheless focuses on production details so as to foreground various artistic qualities that distinguish his approach. Butusov discusses at some length what constitutes his directorial method and methodology, stressing, above all, the primacy of creative freedom for his actors and himself from which emerge complex and highly charged theatre constructions. Butusov, who is against war as such, speaks of his position on the Russian-Ukrainian war, which led to his resignation in 2018 from the artistic directorship of the Lensoviet Theatre in St Petersburg. He became Principal Director of the Vakhtangov, alongside the acclaimed Rimas Tuminas, Artistic Director of this theatre. Tuminas resigned from his post in spring 2022. Butusov and his family left Russia for Paris, and Butusov resigned from the Vakhtangov in November 2022. His production of Tom Stoppard’s Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead is to be premiered at the Russian- and Lithuanian-speaking Vilnius Old Theatre in September 2023. This conversation took place on 23 March and 27 April 2023 on Zoom, and was translated from the Russian and edited by Maria Shevtsova

The idea for metrorhythmic complementariness and synchronism as aspects of interpretation represent a significant part of the education process of music students. In this research, based on surveys and personal experiences, a particular stress is put on interpretation as a main component for building a complete musician. This theme is a rarity in scientific papers and it is often neglected by theory. We will especially discuss the ratio between instruments in a chamber music ensemble as a problem of melodic and metrorhythmic cooperation between instruments. The development of chamber and instrumental genres is one of the basic phenomena in the case of evolution in a certain national culture. The XX century as a period is crucially important for interpretation when all kinds of differen

Thirteen texts every student must read to have a well-rounded high school theatre education

This thesis is a discussion of theatre literature and its place in the high school curriculum. Until now, no one has published what specific theatre texts should be taught to students in high school before they graduate. However, with national standards paving the way for the future of education, and the idea that no child will be left behind, every curriculum, not just the core ones, needs to have a list of required reading before a student graduates from high school. This is the only way to insure a well-rounded high school education in theatre. Thirteen diverse texts ranging from technical theatre to performance to playscripts make up this list. I conclude that these thirteen are the most accessible and, along with regular theatre classes, will give the student the well-rounded education that he or she needs to graduate from high school with a solid understanding of the collaborative art form

Christian temples of the Nakh peoples as manifestation of religious contaminations

The article reveals that the general principle of localization of temples and sacred complexes on the territory of the Nakhs’ residence corresponded to the radial-route model of space development: the most revered temple was necessarily located in the center of the ethnic community, temples and cult complexes existed in every patronymic community and patronymic family. Ensembleness is one of the leading characteristics of the temple architecture of this period. The hierarchical principle has received the greatest development. It is revealed that the identity of the variants of “folk” church building is determined to a greater extent by the nature of the introduction of traditional culture features into it, however, in this case, its formation was largely influenced by the Christian cultures of various directions existing in the specified territory (Orthodoxy, Catholicism and Nestorianism), as well as Islam. The significant influence of Nestorian Christian culture on the process of formation of the features of the church building of the Sunny Valley strip of Nestorian Christian culture is indicated

The article considers one of the genres of publishing discourse, namely, the website of a publish-ing house. The novelty of the article is due to the lack of knowledge with regard to the phenomenon of exploiting a publisher’s website as a means for promoting a book. The purpose of the study is to identify strategies for promoting a pedagogical book that are presented on the website of the Italian publishing house Edilingua, including an addressing strategy, an information strategy and a meta-discursive strategy. These strategies of the book publishing discourse are considered to have a communicative and pragmatic potential to influence the reader. The author offers an analysis of the ways to express the humanitarian and educational missions of the publishing house presented in the texts of special headings. The article focuses on ways to implement the concept of «usability» via the texts of the Edilingua web-site. The paper offers an analysis of such characteristics of the texts presented on the publisher's website as informational attractiveness and ensembleness. The linguistic features of the publishing discourse genres, specifically, the abstract of a particular book and the electronic catalog are considered. The prospects of further research into the genres of publishing discourse are outlined
