Applied project submitted to the Department of Computer Science, Ashesi University College, in partial fulfillment of Bachelor of Science degree in Management Information Systems, April 2017There have been many changes in Ghana’s school language policy and this is main due to the desire to improve literacy acquisition. However, there has been little improvement in the literacy and numeracy skills of students. There is now a recognised need for a better means of effectively teaching children, especially when it comes to English. The Mother Tongue Literacy Project was established to enhance mother tongue literacy acquisition and teach English as a second language. This project aims at developing a technological tool that will support the teachers and coaches of the organisation. The application is tailored for the literacy project, and as such, it includes the lesson guides for the teachers and additional features such as a timer, an assessment form and a way to share and view photos of teaching and learning materials, to make it easy for them to prepare and teach each lesson.Ashesi University Colleg

ABSTRACT We report results of a 2 ½-month pilot study of Project Listen's PC-based Reading Tutor program for enhancing English education in India. Our focus was on low-income elementary school students, a population that has little or no exposure to English outside of school. The students showed measurable improvement on quantitative tests of reading fluency while using the tutor. Post-pilot interviews explored the students' experience of the reading tutor. Further, a survey of educational programs gives a picture of the wide range of institutions providing training in English in and around Bangalore to low-income populations. Each has associated infrastructure, personnel, and curricular constraints that would be faced by interventions like the reading tutor, even if it can be shown to be effective. The perceived advantages of literacy software and associated measures of success also vary by program
