Probability density estimation with tunable kernels using orthogonal forward regression
A generalized or tunable-kernel model is proposed for probability density function estimation based on an orthogonal forward regression procedure. Each stage of the density estimation process determines a tunable kernel, namely, its center vector and diagonal covariance matrix, by minimizing a leave-one-out test criterion. The kernel mixing weights of the constructed sparse density estimate are finally updated using the multiplicative nonnegative quadratic programming algorithm to ensure the nonnegative and unity constraints, and this weight-updating process additionally has the desired ability to further reduce the model size. The proposed tunable-kernel model has advantages, in terms of model generalization capability and model sparsity, over the standard fixed-kernel model that restricts kernel centers to the training data points and employs a single common kernel variance for every kernel. On the other hand, it does not optimize all the model parameters together and thus avoids the problems of high-dimensional ill-conditioned nonlinear optimization associated with the conventional finite mixture model. Several examples are included to demonstrate the ability of the proposed novel tunable-kernel model to effectively construct a very compact density estimate accurately
Image-based deep learning for classification of noise transients in gravitational wave detectors
The detection of gravitational waves has inaugurated the era of gravitational
astronomy and opened new avenues for the multimessenger study of cosmic
sources. Thanks to their sensitivity, the Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo
interferometers will probe a much larger volume of space and expand the
capability of discovering new gravitational wave emitters. The characterization
of these detectors is a primary task in order to recognize the main sources of
noise and optimize the sensitivity of interferometers. Glitches are transient
noise events that can impact the data quality of the interferometers and their
classification is an important task for detector characterization. Deep
learning techniques are a promising tool for the recognition and classification
of glitches. We present a classification pipeline that exploits convolutional
neural networks to classify glitches starting from their time-frequency
evolution represented as images. We evaluated the classification accuracy on
simulated glitches, showing that the proposed algorithm can automatically
classify glitches on very fast timescales and with high accuracy, thus
providing a promising tool for online detector characterization.Comment: 25 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in Classical and

Brain image clustering by wavelet energy and CBSSO optimization algorithm
Previously, the diagnosis of brain abnormality was significantly important in the saving of social and hospital resources. Wavelet energy is known as an effective feature detection which has great efficiency in different utilities. This paper suggests a new method based on wavelet energy to automatically classify magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) brain images into two groups (normal and abnormal), utilizing support vector machine (SVM) classification based on chaotic binary shark smell optimization (CBSSO) to optimize the SVM weights.
The results of the suggested CBSSO-based KSVM are compared favorably to several other methods in terms of better sensitivity and authenticity. The proposed CAD system can additionally be utilized to categorize the images with various pathological conditions, types, and illness modes
Skeleton-Based Human Action Recognition with Global Context-Aware Attention LSTM Networks
Human action recognition in 3D skeleton sequences has attracted a lot of
research attention. Recently, Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks have shown
promising performance in this task due to their strengths in modeling the
dependencies and dynamics in sequential data. As not all skeletal joints are
informative for action recognition, and the irrelevant joints often bring noise
which can degrade the performance, we need to pay more attention to the
informative ones. However, the original LSTM network does not have explicit
attention ability. In this paper, we propose a new class of LSTM network,
Global Context-Aware Attention LSTM (GCA-LSTM), for skeleton based action
recognition. This network is capable of selectively focusing on the informative
joints in each frame of each skeleton sequence by using a global context memory
cell. To further improve the attention capability of our network, we also
introduce a recurrent attention mechanism, with which the attention performance
of the network can be enhanced progressively. Moreover, we propose a stepwise
training scheme in order to train our network effectively. Our approach
achieves state-of-the-art performance on five challenging benchmark datasets
for skeleton based action recognition
Feature selection for microarray gene expression data using simulated annealing guided by the multivariate joint entropy
In this work a new way to calculate the multivariate joint entropy is presented. This measure is the basis for a fast information-theoretic based evaluation of gene relevance in a Microarray Gene Expression data context. Its low complexity is based on the reuse of previous computations to calculate current feature relevance. The mu-TAFS algorithm --named as such to differentiate it from previous TAFS algorithms-- implements a simulated annealing technique specially designed for feature subset selection. The algorithm is applied to the maximization of gene subset relevance in several public-domain microarray data sets. The experimental results show a notoriously high classification performance and low size subsets formed by biologically meaningful genes.Postprint (published version
