    Thirty Years of Machine Learning: The Road to Pareto-Optimal Wireless Networks

    Future wireless networks have a substantial potential in terms of supporting a broad range of complex compelling applications both in military and civilian fields, where the users are able to enjoy high-rate, low-latency, low-cost and reliable information services. Achieving this ambitious goal requires new radio techniques for adaptive learning and intelligent decision making because of the complex heterogeneous nature of the network structures and wireless services. Machine learning (ML) algorithms have great success in supporting big data analytics, efficient parameter estimation and interactive decision making. Hence, in this article, we review the thirty-year history of ML by elaborating on supervised learning, unsupervised learning, reinforcement learning and deep learning. Furthermore, we investigate their employment in the compelling applications of wireless networks, including heterogeneous networks (HetNets), cognitive radios (CR), Internet of things (IoT), machine to machine networks (M2M), and so on. This article aims for assisting the readers in clarifying the motivation and methodology of the various ML algorithms, so as to invoke them for hitherto unexplored services as well as scenarios of future wireless networks.Comment: 46 pages, 22 fig

    Recent Advances in Joint Wireless Energy and Information Transfer

    In this paper, we provide an overview of the recent advances in microwave-enabled wireless energy transfer (WET) technologies and their applications in wireless communications. Specifically, we divide our discussions into three parts. First, we introduce the state-of-the-art WET technologies and the signal processing techniques to maximize the energy transfer efficiency. Then, we discuss an interesting paradigm named simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT), where energy and information are jointly transmitted using the same radio waveform. At last, we review the recent progress in wireless powered communication networks (WPCN), where wireless devices communicate using the power harvested by means of WET.     Wireless networks are susceptible and prone to assorted attacks at different layers from multiple sources and therefore it is required to understand the mechanism as well as taxonomy of attacks. By this perspective, there is need to investigate the network level attacks, their impact and remedial measures so that the overall scenario can be made secured. The nodes in wireless environment are affected adversely by number of attacks focusing of the resources used by the nodes participating in the communication. These network nodes are generally associated with the assorted functional aspects including battery or energy, power, log of neighboring nodes, cache and number of services. In a network attack, the malicious node or packet attempts to temporarily or permanently halt these parameters so that the authentic and realistic communication can be damaged. A number of algorithmic solutions work against assorted attacks but there is huge scope of research in this segment.
