Beyond the Hype: On Using Blockchains in Trust Management for Authentication
Trust Management (TM) systems for authentication are vital to the security of
online interactions, which are ubiquitous in our everyday lives. Various
systems, like the Web PKI (X.509) and PGP's Web of Trust are used to manage
trust in this setting. In recent years, blockchain technology has been
introduced as a panacea to our security problems, including that of
authentication, without sufficient reasoning, as to its merits.In this work, we
investigate the merits of using open distributed ledgers (ODLs), such as the
one implemented by blockchain technology, for securing TM systems for
authentication. We formally model such systems, and explore how blockchain can
help mitigate attacks against them. After formal argumentation, we conclude
that in the context of Trust Management for authentication, blockchain
technology, and ODLs in general, can offer considerable advantages compared to
previous approaches. Our analysis is, to the best of our knowledge, the first
to formally model and argue about the security of TM systems for
authentication, based on blockchain technology. To achieve this result, we
first provide an abstract model for TM systems for authentication. Then, we
show how this model can be conceptually encoded in a blockchain, by expressing
it as a series of state transitions. As a next step, we examine five prevalent
attacks on TM systems, and provide evidence that blockchain-based solutions can
be beneficial to the security of such systems, by mitigating, or completely

The technological advancements witnessed by our society in recent decades have brought
improvements in our quality of life, but they have also created a number of opportunities for
attackers to cause harm. Before the Internet revolution, most crime and malicious activity
generally required a victim and a perpetrator to come into physical contact, and this limited
the reach that malicious parties had. Technology has removed the need for physical contact
to perform many types of crime, and now attackers can reach victims anywhere in the world, as long as they are connected to the Internet. This has revolutionised the characteristics of crime and warfare, allowing operations that would not have been possible before. In this document, we provide an overview of the malicious operations that are happening on the Internet today. We first provide a taxonomy of malicious activities based on the attacker’s motivations and capabilities, and then move on to the technological and human elements that adversaries require to run a successful operation. We then discuss a number of frameworks that have been proposed to model malicious operations. Since adversarial behaviours are not a purely technical topic, we draw from research in a number of fields (computer science, criminology, war studies). While doing this, we discuss how these frameworks can be used by researchers and practitioners to develop effective mitigations against malicious online operations.Published versio
A systematic literature review of blockchain cyber security
Since the publication of Satoshi Nakamoto's white paper on Bitcoin in 2008, blockchain has (slowly) become one of the most frequently discussed methods for securing data storage and transfer through decentralized, trustless, peer-to-peer systems. This research identifies peer-reviewed literature that seeks to utilize blockchain for cyber security purposes and presents a systematic analysis of the most frequently adopted blockchain security applications. Our findings show that the Internet of Things (IoT) lends itself well to novel blockchain applications, as do networks and machine visualization, public key cryptography, web applications, certification schemes and the secure storage of Personally Identifiable Information (PII). This timely systematic review also sheds light on future directions of research, education and practices in the blockchain and cyber security space, such as security of blockchain in IoT, security of blockchain for AI data, and sidechain security,etc
