    Empirical Investigation into Impact of Electronic Commerce Systems Richness on User Behavior: The Case of a Complex Product

    There is no doubt that growth of electronic commerce (EC) on the Internet/Web is only going to accelerate even more. However, given that commerce in these environments are virtual in nature and that most consumers feel uncomfortable with this virtuality a more compelling issue is how can the EC environments be made more acceptable to consumers to approximate their real-world physical store purchases behavior. Drawing upon previous literature, this study uses the theme of “fit” between EC environment and the product type, develops four different prototype systems depicting different EC environments, and using laboratory-based experiments examines the influence of “fit” on four user outcomes.     CrossFlow: Integrating Workflow Management and Electronic Commerce

    The CrossFlow1 architecture provides support for cross-organisational workflow management in dynamically established virtual enterprises. The creation of a business relationship between a service provider organisation performing a service on behalf of a consumer organisation can be made dynamic when augmented by virtual market technology, the dynamic configuration of the contract enactment infrastructures, and the provision of fine grained service monitoring and control. Standard ways of describing services and contracts can be combined with matchmaking technology to create a virtual market for such service provision and consumption. A provider can then advertise its services in the market and consumers can search for a compatible business partner. This provides choice in selecting a partner and allows the deferment of the decision to a point in time where it can be made on the most up-to-date requirements of the consumer and service offers in the market. The penalty for deferred decision making is the time to set up the infrastructure in each organisation for the dynamically established contract. Thus, a further aspect of CrossFlow was to exploit the contract in the dynamic and automatic configuration of the contract enactment and supervision infrastructures of the respective organisations and in linking them in a dynamic fashion. The electronic contract, which results from the agreement between the newly established business partners, completely specifies the intended collaboration between them. Given the importance of the business process enacted by the provider, this includes fine-grained monitoring and control to allow tight co-operation between the organisations

    CrossFlow: Cross-Organizational Workflow Management for Service Outsourcing in Dynamic Virtual Enterprises

    In this report, we present the approach to cross-organizational workflow management of the CrossFlow project. CrossFlow is a European research project aiming at the support of cross-organizational workflows in dynamic virtual enterprises. The cooperation in these virtual enterprises is based on dynamic service outsourcing specified in electronic contracts. Service enactment is performed by dynamically linking the workflow management infrastructures of the involved organizations. Extended service enactment support is provided in the form of cross-organizational transaction management and process control, advanced quality of service monitoring, and support for high-level flexibility in service enactment. CrossFlow technology is realized on top of a commercial workflow management platform and applied in two real-world scenarios in the contexts of a logistics and an insurance company

    E-consulting of Small and Medium Agribusiness Enterprises: The case of eEurope Godigital application into the Peloponnese Region

    This study describes the design and development of a web-based electronic training system aiming at business operations of small and medium-sized agribusiness enterprises (SMAEs). The proposed system will meet current and future needs of SMAEs for timely, accurate, and customised training removing the barriers of geographical solitude and economies of scale. The objectives of this system are: (a) to offer training and consultancy to SMAEs on how to use information and communication technologies as business tools in order to improve their operations and gain competitive advantage (b) to provide education material customised to the special needs of each SMAE, (c) to provide on-line training, advice and consultancy using special-trained operators, and (d) to provide on-line training, advice and consultancy by skilled operators who have been trained to offer those services. ETS will be an Internet-based system. The system will operate as a third-party trusted intermediate between SMAEs, consultants, and content providers. The system design will be extended to cover the needs of the programme "Training support for Go-Digital Project" funded by Greek Ministry of Development which aims to offer training and support in the usage of Internet services to 50.000 SMEs

    Studying How E-Markets Evaluation Can Enhance Trust in Virtual Business Communities

    One of the major drawbacks of conducting business online is the raised level of risk associated with business transactions. Potential business partners usually have limited information about each others reliability or product / service quality before an online transaction. In this paper, we focus on the problem of selecting a trustful electronic market (e-market), in order to perform business transactions with it. In particular, we examine how the decision of selecting an appropriate e-market can be facilitated by an e-market recommendation algorithm. For this purpose, a metadata model for collecting and storing e-market evaluations from the members of a virtual business community in a reusable and interoperable manner is introduced. Then, an e-market recommendation algorithm that can synthesize existing e-market evaluations stored using the metadata model, is designed.     Maritime transport in digital world

    Authors investigate the impact of the electronic economy to the transport value chain, and especially the port as technological node. The electronic economy impacts on the transport chain, and on logistics outline different view on the port operations. The ports do not only bound themselves to basic transit operations only, but rather involve the sophisticated logistic operations. Simulation has been used to define economic behaviour of the model and its entities for two generic case studies – usage of the electronic and paper documents. The results show that electronic documents can decrease the transaction costs Electronic documents diminish the time used to obtain, create the documents, and thus the costs are decreased. For one shipment (total of 103 documents) electronic documents are 39% cheaper then paper documents and the difference between the electronic and paper documents is 295.44$ for one set of 103 documents in one shipment.

    Business-to-business e-commerce: an innovative tool for food chain management

    A supply chain is a network of facilities and distribution options that performs the functions of procurement of materials, transformation of these materials into intermediate and finished goods, and the distribution of the final goods to customers. The management of food chains, particular of fresh produce chains, need to achieve two goals: (a) create efficient physical flows of products by minimising logistics cost, and reducing lead times (b) run an effective value chain by safeguarding mutual gains for all members of the chain, building trust between suppliers and buyers and at the same time maintaining quality for end consumers. Food chain management was always at a loss for tools to leveraging its efforts on achieving value for chain members and eventually the end-consumers. Although food industry, both in USA and Europe, has experimented with various alternative solutions to this multimillion chain management, yet more can be expected. Business-to-business e-commerce (B2B) appears to be an innovative tool that meets the high standards of the industry and the potential growth. This study examines the uses of B2B in food industry to give chain management solutions. It reviews the uses of B2B and, in particular, highlights the applications of B2B by small agribusiness in order to forge their ring in food chains. It builds upon communication in supply chain. It describes contracting as an example how B2B e-commerce can advance supply activities and reports the development of a B2B olive oil supply chain application. It concludes that B2B can be a strong leverage for food chain management to achieve its goals and produce value for the members of the chain and the end consumers
