The main idea of this survey was to gather the data related to Malaysian Open Access Journals (OAJs) with respect to their subject, host organization, indexing, full text availability and language during 2005-2012. Malaysian journals were selected for this survey because Malaysia is currently one of the successful countries in science and technology among other Islamic countries. Data gathering was performed through using various sources of information such as literature, search engines, and directories. Altogether 216 Malaysian scientific OAJs were identified and analyzed. Most of these journals are published by universities in comparison with research institutes. The number of OAJs in “Social Sciences” and “Engineering and Technology” is higher than other subject fields. The main language of Malaysian OAJs is English. IRANDOR4 : 98.1000/ijism.92.11221

EJUM (Electronic Journal of the University of Malaya) is an Internet-based journal hosting system, specially designed to serve scholarly digital journal libraries. It currently hosts 13 issues (1996-2002) of the Malaysian Journal of Computer Science (MJCS) and the Malaysian Journal of Library and Information Science (MJLIS). Both journals are published semi-annually. MJCS is indexed by the INSPEC database whilst, MJLIS is indexed by LISAPlus and Library Literature. This system aims: (a) To provide an avenue for scholarly journals to be hosted by a single system, making it easy for academic publishers to be involved in electronic publishing; (b) To provide participating academic journal publishers with the means to electronically manage article contributions; (c) To provide journal publishers with the facility to archive their older issues; (d) To provide academic publishers the means to electronically manage subscriptions; (e) To automate the editorial and refereeing process common to scholarly journals; (f) To provide users with an efficient and varied search and retrieval options; (g) To provide users with a personalization service, which profile their search interests and alert them of any new articles subsequently published; and (h) To provide subscriber’s and access reports. A survey of e-journals in Malaysia over the Internet reveals that very few publishers provide full-text access, let alone a comprehensive search and retrieval function. Most e-journals are single journal systems and provide access to only the abstract of articles. The proposed e-journal system aims to automate most of the journal publishing processes with features that are user friendly. The first version of EJUM was developed in 1996 and was improved in 2002
