A review on flicker-free ac-dc LED drivers for single-phase and three-phase ac power grids

    Get PDF
Light-Emitting Diodes (LEDs) are coming strongly into the lighting market due to their advantages over conventional lighting solutions: energy efficient, controllable in both light and color, long lifetime, lack of a warm-up period and high power density. Some of these advantages will make LED light sources to be more than just a lightbulb, being able to transmit data, control light color, hue and intensity or even detect people in indoor environments. Nevertheless, these advantages attributed to LED capabilities are, in reality, achieved thanks to the LED driver. The present work reviews the current stateof- the-art strategies to drive LEDs from ac power grids with special emphasis into removing the most limiting component from the point of view of the lifetime, which is the electrolytic capacitor, while achieving a flicker-free performance of the light output of the LED driver. Moreover, it focuses on analyzing the required regulations, challenges and applicability of LED drivers in both single-phase and three-phase ac power gridsTrabajo apoyado en parte por el Gobierno español en virtud del Proyecto MINECO-17-DPI2016-75760-R, por el Principado de Asturias bajo la subvención BP14-142 de Severo Ochoa y el Proyecto GRUPIN2018 JAVIER SEBASTIAN, y en parte por el Fondo Europeo de Desarrollo Regional (FEDER

Heat Treated NiP–SiC Composite Coatings: Elaboration and Tribocorrosion Behaviour in NaCl Solution

    Get PDF
Tribocorrosion behaviour of heat-treated NiP and NiP–SiC composite coatings was investigated in a 0.6 M NaCl solution. The tribocorrosion tests were performed in a linear sliding tribometer with an electrochemical cell interface. It was analyzed the influence of SiC particles dispersion in the NiP matrix on current density developed, on coefficient of friction and on wear volume loss. The results showed that NiP–SiC composite coatings had a lower wear volume loss compared to NiP coatings. However, the incorporation of SiC particles into the metallic matrix affects the current density developed by the system during the tribocorrosion test. It was verified that not only the volume of co-deposited particles (SiC vol.%) but also the number of SiC particles per coating area unit (and consequently the SiC particles size) have made influence on the tribocorrosion behaviour of NiP–SiC composite coatings

A combined photolytic–electrolytic system for the simultaneous recovery of copper and degradation of phenol or 4-chlorophenol in mixed solutions

    Get PDF
The effects of the presence of copper on the photooxidation of phenol and 4-chlorophenol and of the presence of the phenols on the recovery of copper by electrodeposition are studied in three systems: a photolytic cell in the presence and absence of TiO2 as a catalyst or H2O2 as an oxidant; an electrolytic cell and a combined photolytic – electrolytic system. The optimum system for the simultaneous removal of copper and destruction of the phenols which overcomes the effects of copper-phenol reactions is a combined system with concentrator electrode technology incorporated into the electrolytic cell. This combined system achieves > 99% removal of copper and destruction of phenol or 4-chlorophenol in an 8 h period.EPSRC/Environmental Technology Best Practice Programme (ETBPP) and Fluid Dynamic International Ltd. for a grant under the Link (WMR03) programme

Effect of operational parameters and Pd/In catalyst in the reduction of nitrate using copper electrode

    Get PDF
Water with high concentration of nitrate may cause damage to health and to the environment. This study investigated how concentration, current density, flow, pH, the use of Pd/In catalyst and operating mode (constant current density and constant cell potential) have an influence in the electrochemical reduction of nitrate and in the formation of gaseous compounds using copper electrode. Experiments were performed in two-compartment electrolytic cells separated by a cationic membrane with nitrate model solutions prepared as a surrogate of concentrated brines from membrane desalination plants. The results show that the electroreduction process has potential for reduction of nitrate and that it is influenced by the operational conditions. The best conditions found for the treatment - with satisfactory reduction of nitrate, formation of compounds and reproducibility - were at nitrate concentrations of 600 and 1000 mg.L-1, current density of 1.1 mA.cm-2 and without pH control, since in these conditions the production of gaseous compounds is higher than the production of nitrite. When Pd/In catalyst was used, the nitrate reduction was 50% after 6 hours of experiment and the predominant product were gaseous compounds. When compared to the experiment without the catalyst, the arrangement with Pd/In was the most efficient one.Fil: Beltrame, Thiago Favarini. Ufrgds Lacor; BrasilFil: Coelho, Vanessa. Critical aspects in the management of new technologies: A case study

    Get PDF
The good and effective management of a new technology is fundamental for its success not only among the scientific and technical community, but especially for its entry and expansion in the market. There are many examples of new product or process technologies that, notwithstanding the technological relevance and many chances to succeed, have found many obstacles to their dimensional development due to a lack of management of technology in their specific sector. The aim of this paper is to analyse the case of many new process technologies developed along 50 years in the titanium metal sector where some critical aspects ad mistakes in the management of these new technologies have limited or stopped their complete development and the following introduction in the sector. Some useful elements will be pointed out in order to reach more general remarks.Technological Barriers, Management of Technology, Electrolytic Process, Titanium.
