    Ultra low range sidelobe level pulse compression waveform design for spaceborne meteorological radars.

    Meteorological measurements from spaceborne radars present several advantages over current passive techniques, due to the radar capability to discriminate backscattered energy in range. However, the system configuration imposes stringent design requirements in order to guarantee cloud and rain detectability, in particular on the radar waveform. Since power is severely restricted on board a satellite, it is necessary to achieve an efficient range resolution with low transmitted power requirements. Pulse compression theory solves the previous conflicting demand, but the transmitted signal needs to be carefully designed in order to allow the significantly large dynamic range (between 60 and 80 dB depending on the type of meteorological target) needed to carry out the measurements. Several pulse compression range sidelobe reduction techniques of differing natures have been investigated and reported in the literature during the past 50 years. A detailed survey of the most relevant range sidelobe supression procedures has been carried out in order to identify the most suitable frequency modulation candidates which are potentially capable of meeting the stringent specifications of spaceborne radar meteorology. Novel pulse compression waveform design techniques have also been developed, employing linear FM predistortion functions and asymmetric frequency modulation laws, which provide excellent performance in terms of range sidelobe level (below -60 dB) and Doppler tolerance. Different options for the provision of a rain mode for the RA-2 Radar Altimeter (due to fly on European Space Agency ENVISAT satellite) are described, based on altimetry linear FM full-deramp technique concepts. Finally, amplitude modulated pulse compression waveform design alternatives are analysed for the MACSIM radar (Millimetre wave Active Cloud Structure Imaging Mission, European Space Agency Pre Phase A Study), which allow to measure different type of clouds within the Mission required radiometric resolution accuracy

    Innovative Adaptive Techniques for Multi Channel Spaceborne SAR Systems

    Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) is a well-known technology which allows to coherently combine multiple returns from (typically) ground-based targets from a moving radar mounted either on an airborne or on a space-borne vehicle. The relative motion between the targets on ground and the platform causes a Doppler effect, which is exploited to discriminate along-track positions of targets themselves. In addition, as most of conventional radar, a pulsed wide-band waveform is transmitted periodically, thus allowing even a radar discrimination capability in the range direction (i.e. in distance). For side-looking acquisition geometries, the along-track and the range directions are almost orthogonal, so that the two dimensional target discrimination capabiliy results in the possibility to produce images of the illuminated area on ground. A side-looking geometry consists in the radar antenna to be, either mechanically or electronically, oriented perpendicular to the observed area. Nowadays technology allows discrimination capability (also referred to as resolution) in both alongtrack and range directions in the order of few tenths of centimeters. Since the SAR is a microwave active sensor, this technology assure the possibility to produce images of the terrain independently of the sunlight illumination and/or weather conditions. This makes the SAR a very useful instrument for monitoring and mapping both the natural and the artificial activities over the Earth’s surface. Among all the limitations of a single-channel SAR system, this work focuses over some of them which are briefly listed below: a) the performance achievable in terms of resolution are usually paid in terms of system complexity, dimension, mass and cost; b) since the SAR is a coherent active sensor, it is vulnerable to both intentionally and unintentionally radio-frequency interferences which might limit normal system operability; c) since the Doppler effect it is used to discriminate targets (assumed to be stationary) on the ground, this causes an intrinsic ambiguity in the interpretation of backscattered returns from moving targets. These drawbacks can be easily overcome by resorting to a Multi-cannel SAR (M-SAR) system

    Aircraft and satellite measurement of ocean wave directional spectra using scanning-beam microwave radars

    A microwave radar technique for remotely measuring the vector wave number spectrum of the ocean surface is described. The technique, which employs short-pulse, noncoherent radars in a conical scan mode near vertical incidence, is shown to be suitable for both aircraft and satellite application, the technique was validated at 10 km aircraft altitude, where we have found excellent agreement between buoy and radar-inferred absolute wave height spectra

    A rationale and recommendations for planning, implementing, and operating an altimetric system aboard the Earth observing system (Eos) spacecraft is provided. In keeping with the recommendations of the Eos Science and Mission Requirements Working Group, a complete altimetric system is defined that is capable of perpetuating the data set to be derived from TOPEX/Poseidon, enabling key scientific questions to be addressed. Since the scientific utility and technical maturity of spaceborne radar altimeters is well documented, the discussion is limited to highlighting those Eos-specific considerations that materially impact upon radar altimetric measurements

    Efficient SAR MTI simulator of marine scenes

    Tècniques de detecció de moviment amb radars d'apertura sintètica multicanals sobre escenaris marítims.[ANGLÈS] Multichannel spaceborne and airborne synthetic aperture radars (SAR) offer the opportunity to monitor maritime traffic through specially designed instruments and applying a suitable signal processing in order to reject sea surface clutter. These processing techniques are known as Moving Target Indication techniques (MTI) and the choice of the most adequate method depends on the radar system and operating environment. In maritime scenes the seas presents a complicated clutter whose temporal/spatial coherence models and background reflectivity depends on a large number of factors and are still subject of research. Moreover the targets kinematics are influenced by the sea conditions, producing in some situations high alterations in the imaged target. These aspects make difficult the detectability analysis of vessels in maritime scenarios, requiring both theoretical models and numerical simulations. This thesis looks into the few available MTI techniques and deals experimentally with them in a developed simulator for maritime SAR images. The results are also presented in a image format, giving the sequence for one trial simulation and the asymptotic probability of detection for the simulated conditions.[CASTELLÀ] Los radares de apertura sintética (SAR) multicanal a bordo de satélites o plataformas aerotransportadas ofrecen la oportunidad de monitorizar el tráfico marítimo a través de instrumentos especialmente diseñados y procesando los datos recibidos de forma adecuada para rechazar la señal provocada por la reflexión del mar. A estas técnicas se las conoce como Moving Target Indication techniques (MTI) y la elección de la más adecuada depende del sistema y del entorno de aplicación. En escenarios marinos, el mar presenta un clutter complicado de modelar, cuya coherencia espacio-temporal y reflectividad radar dependen de un gran número de factores que hoy en día todavía siguen siendo investigados. Por otra parte los parámetros dinámicos del target estan influenciados por las condiciones del mar, produciendo en algunas situaciones graves alteraciones en la formación de la imagen. Estos aspectos dificultan el análisis de la detección de las embarcaciones, requiriendo modelos teóricos y simulaciones numéricas. Este Proyecto Final de Carrera investiga las técnicas MTI disponibles, aplicándolas sobre las imágenes marítimas generadas por un simulador SAR. A aquestes tècniques se les coneix com Moving Target indication techniques (MTI) i l'elecció de la més adequada depèn del sistema i de l'entorn d'aplicació. En escenaris marins, el mar presenta un clutter complicat de modelar, la coherència espai-temporal i reflectivitat radar depenen d'un gran nombre de factors que avui dia encara segueixen sent investigats. D'altra banda els paràmetres dinàmics del target estan influenciats per les condicions de la mar, produint en algunes situacions greus alteracions en la formació de la imatge. Aquests aspectes dificulten l'anàlisi de la detecció de les embarcacions, requerint models teòrics i simulacions numèriques. Aquest Projecte Final de Carrera investiga les tècniques MTI disponibles, aplicant-les sobre les imatges marítimes generades per un simulador SAR.     The objective is to investigate the application of Doppler radar systems for global wind measurement. A model of the satellite-based radar wind sounder (RAWS) is discussed, and many critical problems in the designing process, such as the antenna scan pattern, tracking the Doppler shift caused by satellite motion, and backscattering of radar signals from different types of clouds, are discussed along with their computer simulations. In addition, algorithms for measuring mean frequency of radar echoes, such as the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) estimator, the covariance estimator, and the estimators based on autoregressive models, are discussed. Monte Carlo computer simulations were used to compare the performance of these algorithms. Anti-alias methods are discussed for the FFT and the autoregressive methods. Several algorithms for reducing radar ambiguity were studied, such as random phase coding methods and staggered pulse repitition frequncy (PRF) methods. Computer simulations showed that these methods are not applicable to the RAWS because of the broad spectral widths of the radar echoes from clouds. A waveform modulation method using the concept of spread spectrum and correlation detection was developed to solve the radar ambiguity. Radar ambiguity functions were used to analyze the effective signal-to-noise ratios for the waveform modulation method. The results showed that, with suitable bandwidth product and modulation of the waveform, this method can achieve the desired maximum range and maximum frequency of the radar system

    Validation of CReSIS Synthetic Aperture Radar Processor and Optimal Processing Parameters

    Sounding the ice sheets of Greenland and Antarctica is a vital component in determining the effect of global warming on sea level rise. Of particular importance are measurements of the bedrock topography of the outlet glaciers that transport ice from the ice sheet's interior to the margin where it calves into icebergs, contributing to sea level rise. These outlet glaciers are difficult to sound due to crevassing caused by the relatively fast movement of the ice in the glacial channel and higher signal attenuation caused by warmer ice. The Center for Remote Sensing of Ice Sheets (CReSIS) uses multi-channel airborne radars which employ methods for achieving better resolution and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) to better sound outlet glaciers. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) techniques are used in the along-track dimension, pulse compression in the range dimension, and an antenna array in the cross-track dimension. CReSIS has developed the CReSIS SAR processor (CSARP) to effectively and efficiently process the data collected by these radars in each dimension. To validate the performance of this processor a SAR simulator was developed with the functionality to test the implementation of the processing algorithms in CSARP. In addition to the implementation of this simulator for validation of processing the data in the along-track, cross-track and range dimensions, there are a number of data-dependent processing steps that can affect the quality of the final data product. CSARP was tested with an ideal simulated point target in white Gaussian noise. The SNR change achieved by range compression, azimuth compression, array combination with and without matched filtering, and lever arm application were all within .2 dB of the theoretical expectation. Channel equalization, when paired with noise-based matched filtering, provided 1-2 dB of gain on average but significantly less than the expected gain. Extending the SAR aperture length to sound bedrock will improve the along-track resolution, but at the expense of SNR. Increasing the taper of a window in the fast-time and slow-time will slightly improve the SNR of the data. Changing the relative permittivity used to process the data improved the resulting SNR by no more than 0.025 dB for the test dataset
