Selecting source image sensor nodes based on 2-hop information to improve image transmissions to mobile robot sinks in search \& rescue operations
We consider Robot-assisted Search Rescue operations enhanced with some
fixed image sensor nodes capable of capturing and sending visual information to
a robot sink. In order to increase the performance of image transfer from image
sensor nodes to the robot sinks we propose a 2-hop neighborhood
information-based cover set selection to determine the most relevant image
sensor nodes to activate. Then, in order to be consistent with our proposed
approach, a multi-path extension of Greedy Perimeter Stateless Routing (called
T-GPSR) wherein routing decisions are also based on 2-hop neighborhood
information is proposed. Simulation results show that our proposal reduces
packet losses, enabling fast packet delivery and higher visual quality of
received images at the robot sink
A Geometric Approach to Slot Alignment in Wireless Sensor Networks
Traditionally, slotted communication protocols have employed guard times to delineate and align slots. These guard times may expand the slot duration significantly, especially when clocks are allowed to drift for longer time to reduce clock synchronization overhead. Recently, a new class of lightweight protocols for statistical estimation in wireless sensor networks have been proposed. This new class requires very short transmission durations (jam signals), thus the traditional approach of using guard times would impose significant overhead. We propose a new, more efficient algorithm to align slots. Based on geometrical properties of space, we prove that our approach bounds the slot duration by only a constant factor of what is needed. Multi-Target Tracking in Distributed Sensor Networks using Particle PHD Filters
Multi-target tracking is an important problem in civilian and military
applications. This paper investigates multi-target tracking in distributed
sensor networks. Data association, which arises particularly in multi-object
scenarios, can be tackled by various solutions. We consider sequential Monte
Carlo implementations of the Probability Hypothesis Density (PHD) filter based
on random finite sets. This approach circumvents the data association issue by
jointly estimating all targets in the region of interest. To this end, we
develop the Diffusion Particle PHD Filter (D-PPHDF) as well as a centralized
version, called the Multi-Sensor Particle PHD Filter (MS-PPHDF). Their
performance is evaluated in terms of the Optimal Subpattern Assignment (OSPA)
metric, benchmarked against a distributed extension of the Posterior
Cram\'er-Rao Lower Bound (PCRLB), and compared to the performance of an
existing distributed PHD Particle Filter. Furthermore, the robustness of the
proposed tracking algorithms against outliers and their performance with
respect to different amounts of clutter is investigated.Comment: 27 pages, 6 figure
Distributed Regression in Sensor Networks: Training Distributively with Alternating Projections
Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have attracted considerable attention in
recent years and motivate a host of new challenges for distributed signal
processing. The problem of distributed or decentralized estimation has often
been considered in the context of parametric models. However, the success of
parametric methods is limited by the appropriateness of the strong statistical
assumptions made by the models. In this paper, a more flexible nonparametric
model for distributed regression is considered that is applicable in a variety
of WSN applications including field estimation. Here, starting with the
standard regularized kernel least-squares estimator, a message-passing
algorithm for distributed estimation in WSNs is derived. The algorithm can be
viewed as an instantiation of the successive orthogonal projection (SOP)
algorithm. Various practical aspects of the algorithm are discussed and several
