Content Delivery Latency of Caching Strategies for Information-Centric IoT

In-network caching is a central aspect of Information-Centric Networking (ICN). It enables the rapid distribution of content across the network, alleviating strain on content producers and reducing content delivery latencies. ICN has emerged as a promising candidate for use in the Internet of Things (IoT). However, IoT devices operate under severe constraints, most notably limited memory. This means that nodes cannot indiscriminately cache all content; instead, there is a need for a caching strategy that decides what content to cache. Furthermore, many applications in the IoT space are timesensitive; therefore, finding a caching strategy that minimises the latency between content request and delivery is desirable. In this paper, we evaluate a number of ICN caching strategies in regards to latency and hop count reduction using IoT devices in a physical testbed. We find that the topology of the network, and thus the routing algorithm used to generate forwarding information, has a significant impact on the performance of a given caching strategy. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study that focuses on latency effects in ICN-IoT caching while using real IoT hardware, and the first to explicitly discuss the link between routing algorithm, network topology, and caching effects.Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures, journal pape

Soft Cache Hits and the Impact of Alternative Content Recommendations on Mobile Edge Caching

Caching popular content at the edge of future mobile networks has been widely considered in order to alleviate the impact of the data tsunami on both the access and backhaul networks. A number of interesting techniques have been proposed, including femto-caching and "delayed" or opportunistic cache access. Nevertheless, the majority of these approaches suffer from the rather limited storage capacity of the edge caches, compared to the tremendous and rapidly increasing size of the Internet content catalog. We propose to depart from the assumption of hard cache misses, common in most existing works, and consider "soft" cache misses, where if the original content is not available, an alternative content that is locally cached can be recommended. Given that Internet content consumption is increasingly entertainment-oriented, we believe that a related content could often lead to complete or at least partial user satisfaction, without the need to retrieve the original content over expensive links. In this paper, we formulate the problem of optimal edge caching with soft cache hits, in the context of delayed access, and analyze the expected gains. We then show using synthetic and real datasets of related video contents that promising caching gains could be achieved in practice

Routing and Caching Strategy in Information-Centric Network (ICN)

The main usage of Internet today is content distribution and retrieval. In today’s Internet, connections and data exchanging can only happen between hosts, which is also called host centric end-to-end communication. As the network users and demand of contents grows quickly, current network paradigm is getting more and more complicated and can barely meet the needs in the future. Recently, the architecture of information/content centric networking (ICN) has been proposed and is expected to replace the current communication model. As an in-network caching system, the cache management scheme is a key factor of ICN. To improve the performance of this architecture, a lot of effort has been put by many researchers into this area. In this paper, a new strategy about content caching and routing is introduced. And the results of this new scheme show that this strategy leads to a good performance, i.e., the new scheme can reach less hops, when comparing with regular LRU cache strategy. And less hops means the requested object can be found in nearer routers, the network traffic, hence, is reduced
