Gram-scale cryogenic calorimeters for rare-event searches
The energy threshold of a cryogenic calorimeter can be lowered by reducing
its size. This is of importance since the resulting increase in signal rate
enables new approaches in rare-event searches, including the detection of MeV
mass dark matter and coherent scattering of reactor or solar neutrinos. A
scaling law for energy threshold vs. detector size is given. We analyze the
possibility of lowering the threshold of a gram-scale cryogenic calorimeter to
the few eV regime. A prototype 0.5 g AlO device achieved an energy
threshold of () eV, the lowest value reported for a macroscopic

Large-scale event extraction from literature with multi-level gene normalization
Text mining for the life sciences aims to aid database curation, knowledge summarization and information retrieval through the automated processing of biomedical texts. To provide comprehensive coverage and enable full integration with existing biomolecular database records, it is crucial that text mining tools scale up to millions of articles and that their analyses can be unambiguously linked to information recorded in resources such as UniProt, KEGG, BioGRID and NCBI databases. In this study, we investigate how fully automated text mining of complex biomolecular events can be augmented with a normalization strategy that identifies biological concepts in text, mapping them to identifiers at varying levels of granularity, ranging from canonicalized symbols to unique gene and proteins and broad gene families. To this end, we have combined two state-of-the-art text mining components, previously evaluated on two community-wide challenges, and have extended and improved upon these methods by exploiting their complementary nature. Using these systems, we perform normalization and event extraction to create a large-scale resource that is publicly available, unique in semantic scope, and covers all 21.9 million PubMed abstracts and 460 thousand PubMed Central open access full-text articles. This dataset contains 40 million biomolecular events involving 76 million gene/protein mentions, linked to 122 thousand distinct genes from 5032 species across the full taxonomic tree. Detailed evaluations and analyses reveal promising results for application of this data in database and pathway curation efforts. The main software components used in this study are released under an open-source license. Further, the resulting dataset is freely accessible through a novel API, providing programmatic and customized access (http://www.evexdb.org/api/v001/). Boosted Event Topologies from TeV Scale Light Quark Composite Partners
We propose a new search strategy for quark partners which decay into a
boosted Higgs and a light quark. As an example, we consider phenomenologically
viable right handed up-type quark partners of mass TeV in composite
pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone-boson Higgs models within the context of flavorful
naturalness. Our results show that and signal significance of is achievable at TeV LHC with 35 of
integrated luminosity, sufficient to claim discovery of a new particle. A
combination of a multi-dimensional boosted Higgs tagging technique, kinematics
of pair produced heavy objects and -tagging serves to efficiently diminish
the large QCD backgrounds while maintaining adequate levels of signal
efficiency. We present the analysis in the context of effective field theory,
such that our results can be applied to any future search for pair produced

Responses of football fans to relegation of their team from the English Premier League: PTS?
Objectives : To measure the level of psychological distress caused to supporters of a football team by relegation from the English Premier League. The relationship between age, sex and psychological distress are examined. Method : Opportunity sample cross-sectional survey. Participants were approached through networks of fans and through e-mail networks. Participants were supporters (n = 65) of two relegated premiership football teams. Participants completed the Impact of Event Scale. Results : Mean total Impact of Event Scale scores indicated a clinically significant degree of psychological distress for the majority of respondents. Age or sex of the participants did not predict Impact of Event Scale scores. Conclusions : The results are discussed in terms of the magnitude of Impact of Event Scale scores in relation to other stressors. It is concluded that the impact of such s porting events is psychologically significant. The psychological literature has considered traumatic stress responses to a number of stressors such as threats to life, threats to psychological well-being, threats to physical/ psychological well-being of others, witnessing traumatic events and involvement in a human or natural disaster
Nighttime mesospheric returns associated with a large scale flare event
Magnetic storms associated with large flares can give D region ionization. Special measurements are made at night to evaluate the nature of mesospheric returns obtained under storm conditions. Five periods of time are tabulated varying in length from 20 min to 60 min at which scattered power is observed above the noise level. The three values of k(p) corresponding to the five periods are also given, as is the mean power over noise observed. The scattered powers from 78 to 81 km are comparable with those observed during the day, indicating that a similar ionization density is present. The peak power levels are approximately the same in both cases; but whereas the night data come from an essentially zero background, the day data arise from a substantial level of background scatter. This implies that the periods indicated are the only times at which any substantial particle precipitation is taking place; and that the consequent ionization is confined to the height region shown
