Simulation of structural and electronic properties of amorphous tungsten oxycarbides
Electron beam induced deposition with tungsten hexacarbonyl W(CO)6 as
precursors leads to granular deposits with varying compositions of tungsten,
carbon and oxygen. Depending on the deposition conditions, the deposits are
insulating or metallic. We employ an evolutionary algorithm to predict the
crystal structures starting from a series of chemical compositions that were
determined experimentally. We show that this method leads to better structures
than structural relaxation based on guessed initial structures. We approximate
the expected amorphous structures by reasonably large unit cells that can
accommodate local structural environments that resemble the true amorphous
structure. Our predicted structures show an insulator to metal transition close
to the experimental composition at which this transition is actually observed.
Our predicted structures also allow comparison to experimental electron

Extremely sharp carbon nanocone probes for atomic force microscopy imaging
A simple and reliable catalyst patterning technique combined with electric-field-guided growth is utilized to synthesize a sharp and high-aspect-ratio carbon nanocone probe on a tipless cantilever for atomic force microscopy. A single carbon nanodot produced by an electron-beam-induced deposition serves as a convenient chemical etch mask for catalyst patterning, thus eliminating the need for complicated, resist-based, electron-beam lithography for a nanoprobe fabrication. A gradual, sputtering-induced size reduction and eventual removal of the catalyst particle at the probe tip during electric-field-guided growth creates a sharp probe with a tip radius of only a few nanometers. These fabrication processes are amenable for the wafer-scale synthesis of multiple probes. High resolution imaging of three-dimensional features and deep trenches, and mechanical durability enabling continuous operation for many hours without noticeable image deterioration have been demonstrated

The CantiClever: a dedicated probe for magnetic force microscopy
We present a new cantilever for magnetic-force microscopy (MFM), the CantiClever, which is not derived from atomic-force microscopy (AFM) probes but optimized for MFM. Our design integrates the cantilever and the magnetic tip in a single manufacturing process with the use of silicon micromachining techniques, which allows for batch fabrication of the probes. This manufacturing process enables precise control on all dimensions of the magnetic tip, resulting in a very thin magnetic element with a very high aspect ratio. Using. the CantiClever, magnetic features down to 30 nm could be observed in a CAMST reference sample
