Dynamic Chunk Adjustment for Prioritized SCTP Video Streaming in Heterogeneous WLAN and UMTS Networks

SCTP (Stream Control Transmission Protocol) has demonstrated its scalability and flexibility in multiplexing multiple video streams into a single association as compared to other transport layer protocols. Yet in a single SCTP association, it lacks the QoS provision of prioritized multimedia streams with different requirements. This paper therefore presents a dynamic chunk adjustment for SCTP (DC-SCTP) in supporting multiple prioritized video streams in a heterogeneous WLAN and UMTS network. The proposed DC-SCTP not only allows us to specify different bit rate requirements for prioritized multimedia streams in a single association, but it also offers the “de-association” capability to minimize the unnecessary channel wastage, when a mobile node moves into a UMTS network from a WLAN. Simulation performed on NS-2 demonstrates the effectiveness and the advantages of our proposed DC-SCTP schemes over the original SCTP
