Quantifying Potential Energy Efficiency Gain in Green Cellular Wireless Networks
Conventional cellular wireless networks were designed with the purpose of
providing high throughput for the user and high capacity for the service
provider, without any provisions of energy efficiency. As a result, these
networks have an enormous Carbon footprint. In this paper, we describe the
sources of the inefficiencies in such networks. First we present results of the
studies on how much Carbon footprint such networks generate. We also discuss
how much more mobile traffic is expected to increase so that this Carbon
footprint will even increase tremendously more. We then discuss specific
sources of inefficiency and potential sources of improvement at the physical
layer as well as at higher layers of the communication protocol hierarchy. In
particular, considering that most of the energy inefficiency in cellular
wireless networks is at the base stations, we discuss multi-tier networks and
point to the potential of exploiting mobility patterns in order to use base
station energy judiciously. We then investigate potential methods to reduce
this inefficiency and quantify their individual contributions. By a
consideration of the combination of all potential gains, we conclude that an
improvement in energy consumption in cellular wireless networks by two orders
of magnitude, or even more, is possible.Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1210.843
ADAPTIVE RESOURCE ALLOCATION FOR WIRELESS MULTICAST MIMO-OFDM SYSTEMS
Multiple antenna orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) is a promissing technique for the high downlink capacity in the next generation wireless systems, in which adaptive resource allocation would be an important research issue that can significantly improve the performance with guaranteed QoS for users. Moreover, most of the current source allocation algorithms are limited to the unicast system. In this paper, dynamic resource allocation is studied for multiple antenna OFDMA based systems which provide multicast service. The performance of multicast system is simulated and compared with that of the unicast system. Numerical results also show that the propossed algorithms improve the system capacity significantly compared with the conventional scheme
Adaptive Communications for Next Generation Broadband Wireless Access Systems
In Broadband Wireless Access systems the efficient use of the resources is crucial from many points of views. From the operator point of view, the bandwidth is a scarce, valuable, and expensive resource which must be exploited in an efficient manner while the Quality of Service (QoS) provided to the users is guaranteed. On the other hand, a tight delay and link quality constraints are imposed on each data flow hence the user experiences the same quality as in fixed networks. During the last few years many techniques have been developed in order to increase the spectral efficiency and the throughput. Among them, the use of multiple antennas at the transmitter and the receiver (exploiting spatial multiplexing) with the joint optimization of the medium access control layer and the physical layer parameters. In this Ph.D. thesis, different adaptive techniques for B3G multicarrier wireless systems are developed and proposed focusing on the SS-MC-MA and the OFDM(A) (IEEE 802.16a/e/m standards) communication schemes. The research lines emphasize into the adaptation of the transmission having (Partial) knowledge of the Channel State Information for both; single antenna and multiple antenna links. For single antenna links, the implementation of a joint resource allocation and scheduling strategy by including adaptive modulation and coding is investigated. A low complexity resource allocation and scheduling algorithm is proposed with the objective to cope with real- and/or non-real- time requirements and constraints. A special attention is also devoted in reducing the required signalling. However, for multiple antenna links, the performance of a proposed adaptive transmit antenna selection scheme jointly with space-time block coding selection is investigated and compared with conventional structures. In this research line, mainly two optimizations criteria are proposed for spatial link adaptation, one based on the minimum error rate for fixed throughput, and the second focused on the maximisation of the rate for fixed error rate. Finally, some indications are given on how to include the spatial adaptation into the investigated and proposed resource allocation and scheduling process developed for single antenna transmission

of demand for high data rate wideband wireless services. The design of a
multi-carrier system, such as an OFDMA system, enables high system capacity
suited for these wideband wireless services. This system capacity can be
further optimized with a resource allocation scheme by exploiting the
characteristics of the wireless fading channels. The fundamental idea of a
resource allocation scheme is to efficiently distribute the available wireless
resources, such as the subcarriers and transmission power, among all admitted
users in the system.
Regarding the problems of resource allocation in OFDMA-based wireless
communicationsystems, much of the research effort mainly focuses on finding
efficient power controland subcarrier assignment policies. With systems
employing multicast transmission, the available schemes in literature are not
always applicable. Moreover, the existing approachesare particularly
inaccessible in practical systems in which there are a large numberof OFDM
subcarriers being utilized, as the required computational burden is
prohibitivelyhigh.
The ultimate goal of this Thesis is therefore to propose affordable mechanisms
toflexibly and effectively share out the available resources in multicast
wireless systems deployingOFDMA technology. Specifically, according to
multicast system, it is assumed thatboth the BS and each user are equipped
witha single antenna and the allocation unit is not the subcarrier,as in
conventional OFDMA systems, but a set of contiguoussubcarriers, which is called
chunk, in order to alleviate the heavy computational burden.
An efficient algorithmis proposed whose aim is to maximize the total throughput
subject to constraints on totalavailable power,BER over a chunk, and
proportional data rates constraints among multicast groups. Simulation and
complexity analysis are provided to support thebenefits of chunk-based resource
allocation to multicast OFDMA systems with targeting proportional data rates
among multicast groups
Packet Scheduling Study for Heterogeneous Traffic in Downlink 3GPP LTE System
Long Term Evolution (LTE) network deploys Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) technology for downlink multi-carrier transmission. To meet the Quality of Service (QoS) requirements for LTE networks, packet scheduling has been employed. Packet scheduling determines when and how the user’s packets are transmitted to the receiver. Therefore effective design of packet scheduling algorithm is an important discussion. The aims of packet scheduling are maximizing system throughput, guaranteeing fairness among users, andminimizing either or both PacketLoss Ratio (PLR)and packet delay. Inthis paper, the performance of two packet scheduling algorithms namely Log Maximum-Largest Weighted Delay First (LOG-MLWDF) and Max Delay Unit (MDU), developed for OFDM(Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing)networks, has been investigated in LTE downlink networks, and acomparison of those algorithmswith a well-known scheduling algorithm namely Maximum-Largest Weighted Delay First(MLWDF) has been studied. The performance evaluation was in terms of system throughput, PLR and fairness index. This study was performed forboth real time (voice and video streaming)and non-real time (best effort)perspectives. Results show that for streaming flows,LOG-MLWDF shows best PLR performance among the considered scheduling schemes, and for best effort flows, it outperforms theother two algorithms in terms of packet delay and throughput
Subcarrier and Power Allocation in WiMAX
Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) is one of the latest technologies for providing Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) in a metropolitan area. The use of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) transmissions has been proposed in WiMAX to mitigate the complications which are associated with frequency selective channels. In addition, the multiple access is achieved by using orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) scheme which has several advantages such as flexible resource allocation, relatively simple transceivers, and high spectrum efficient. In OFDMA the controllable resources are the subcarriers and the allocated power per subband. Moreover, adaptive subcarrier and power allocation techniques have been selected to exploit the natural multiuser diversity. This leads to an improvement of the performance by assigning the proper subcarriers to the user according to their channel quality and the power is allocated based on water-filling algorithm. One simple method is to allocate subcarriers and powers equally likely between all users. It is well known that this method reduces the spectral efficiency of the system, hence, it is not preferred unless in some applications.
In order to handle the spectral efficiency problem, in this thesis we discuss three novel resources allocation algorithms for the downlink of a multiuser OFDM system and analyze the algorithm performances based on capacity and fairness measurement. Our intensive simulations validate the algorithm performances.fi=Opinnäytetyö kokotekstinä PDF-muodossa.|en=Thesis fulltext in PDF format.|sv=Lärdomsprov tillgängligt som fulltext i PDF-format
Resource Allocation in 4G and 5G Networks: A Review
The advent of 4G and 5G broadband wireless networks brings several challenges with respect to resource allocation in the networks. In an interconnected network of wireless devices, users, and devices, all compete for scarce resources which further emphasizes the fair and efficient allocation of those resources for the proper functioning of the networks. The purpose of this study is to discover the different factors that are involved in resource allocation in 4G and 5G networks. The methodology used was an empirical study using qualitative techniques by performing literature reviews on the state of art in 4G and 5G networks, analyze their respective architectures and resource allocation mechanisms, discover parameters, criteria and provide recommendations. It was observed that resource allocation is primarily done with radio resource in 4G and 5G networks, owing to their wireless nature, and resource allocation is measured in terms of delay, fairness, packet loss ratio, spectral efficiency, and throughput. Minimal consideration is given to other resources along the end-to-end 4G and 5G network architectures. This paper defines more types of resources, such as electrical energy, processor cycles and memory space, along end-to-end architectures, whose allocation processes need to be emphasized owing to the inclusion of software defined networking and network function virtualization in 5G network architectures. Thus, more criteria, such as electrical energy usage, processor cycle, and memory to evaluate resource allocation have been proposed. Finally, ten recommendations have been made to enhance resource allocation along the whole 5G network architecture
