Effect of meprobamate on the vestibulosensory and vestibular somatic reaction
The influence of meprobamate on the vestibular illusion of counter-rotation, movement coordination and vertical writing was investigated by a double blind trial method and placebo. The results confirm the possibility of the meprobamate application for prophylaxis and correction of vestibular disturbances
Finding a needle in a haystack: toward a psychologically informed method for aviation security screening
Current aviation security systems identify behavioral indicators of deception to assess risks to flights, but they lack a strong psychological basis or empirical validation. We present a new method that tests the veracity of passenger accounts. In an in vivo double-blind randomized-control trial conducted in international airports, security agents detected 66% of deceptive passengers using the veracity test method compared with less than 5% using behavioral indicator recognition. As well as revealing advantages of veracity testing over behavioral indicator identification, the study provides the highest levels to date of deception detection in a realistic setting where the known base rate of deceptive individuals is low
Acoustic Echo and Noise Cancellation System for Hand-Free Telecommunication using Variable Step Size Algorithms
In this paper, acoustic echo cancellation with doubletalk detection system is implemented for a hand-free telecommunication system using Matlab. Here adaptive noise canceller with blind source separation (ANC-BSS) system is proposed to remove both background noise and far-end speaker echo signal in presence of double-talk. During the absence of double-talk, far-end speaker echo signal is cancelled by adaptive echo canceller. Both adaptive noise canceller and adaptive echo canceller are implemented using LMS, NLMS, VSLMS and VSNLMS algorithms. The normalized cross-correlation method is used for double-talk detection. VSNLMS has shown its superiority over all other algorithms both for double-talk and in absence of double-talk. During the absence of double-talk it shows its superiority in terms of increment in ERLE and decrement in misalignment. In presence of double-talk, it shows improvement in SNR of near-end speaker signal
PROTIZINIC ACID FOR ACUTE CYSTITIS : EVALUATION BY A DOUBLE BLIND METHOD
Effect of protizinic acid as an adjuvant to antibiotics was evaluated in acute simple cystitis by a double blind method using bendinamine hydrochloride as a control drug. Both drugs showed good effect in improving symptoms, but the former was significantly superior to the latter in the total evaluation (0.05<p<0.10). Feeling of residual urine was particularly well controlled by protizinic acid. Post-urination burning was also controlled in almost all the cases. No serious side effects were experienced. Protizinic acid may be a useful drug for cystitis
COSMOGRAIL: the COSmological MOnitoring of GRAvItational Lenses XV. Assessing the achievability and precision of time-delay measurements
COSMOGRAIL is a long-term photometric monitoring of gravitationally lensed
QSOs aimed at implementing Refsdal's time-delay method to measure cosmological
parameters, in particular H0. Given long and well sampled light curves of
strongly lensed QSOs, time-delay measurements require numerical techniques
whose quality must be assessed. To this end, and also in view of future
monitoring programs or surveys such as the LSST, a blind signal processing
competition named Time Delay Challenge 1 (TDC1) was held in 2014. The aim of
the present paper, which is based on the simulated light curves from the TDC1,
is double. First, we test the performance of the time-delay measurement
techniques currently used in COSMOGRAIL. Second, we analyse the quantity and
quality of the harvest of time delays obtained from the TDC1 simulations. To
achieve these goals, we first discover time delays through a careful inspection
of the light curves via a dedicated visual interface. Our measurement
algorithms can then be applied to the data in an automated way. We show that
our techniques have no significant biases, and yield adequate uncertainty
estimates resulting in reduced chi2 values between 0.5 and 1.0. We provide
estimates for the number and precision of time-delay measurements that can be
expected from future time-delay monitoring campaigns as a function of the
photometric signal-to-noise ratio and of the true time delay. We make our blind
measurements on the TDC1 data publicly availableComment: 11 pages, 8 figures, published in Astronomy & Astrophysic
Complementary music therapy for cancer patients in at-home palliative care and their caregivers: protocol for a multicentre randomised controlled trial
Background Patients with advanced cancer, receiving at-home palliative care, are subject to numerous symptoms that are changeable and often require attention, a stressful situation that also impacts on the family caregiver. It has been suggested that music therapy may benefit both the patient and the caregiver. We propose a study to analyse the efficacy and cost utility of a music intervention programme, applied as complementary therapy, for cancer patients in palliative care and for their at-home caregivers, compared to usual treatment. Method A randomised, double-blind, multicentre clinical trial will be performed in cancer patients in at-home palliative care and their family caregivers. The study population will include two samples of 40 patients and two samples of 41 caregivers. Participants will be randomly assigned either to the intervention group or to the control group. The intervention group will receive a seven-day programme including music sessions, while the control group will receive seven sessions of (spoken word) therapeutic education. In this study, the primary outcome measure is the assessment of patients' symptoms, according to the Edmonton Symptom Assessment System, and of the overload experienced by family caregivers, measured by the Caregiver Strain Index. The secondary outcomes considered will be the participants' health-related quality of life, their satisfaction with the intervention, and an economic valuation. Discussion This study is expected to enhance our understanding of the efficacy and cost-utility of music therapy for cancer patients in palliative care and for their family caregivers. The results of this project are expected to be applicable and transferrable to usual clinical practice for patients in home palliative care and for their caregivers. The approach described can be incorporated as an additional therapeutic resource within comprehensive palliative care. To our knowledge, no previous high quality studies, based on a double-blind clinical trial, have been undertaken to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of music therapy. The cost-effectiveness of the project will provide information to support decision making, thereby improving the management of health resources and their use within the health system
