The Relationship Between Ethics and Literature in Light of Levinas’s Work

    Get PDF
In my paper I intend to uncover the relationship between ethics and literature. The aforementioned issue is connected to ’ethical turn’ — new orientation in literary studies, which was introduced in the nineties of 20th century. In order to uncover its source of inspiration, I refer to Lévinas’s works, such as Reality and its Shadow, The poet’s vision, Totality and Infinity, Otherwise than Being. I advocate the view that not only Lévinas’s concept of language, but also his account of poetry and responsibility underlie ethical criticism. Therefore, they are regarded as crucial to understand this new approach to literary studies. To illustrate my thesis, I attempt to interpret literary works, i.e. Wordsworth’s and Coetzee’s in light of Lévinas’s concepts.Numer został przygotowany przy wsparciu Ministerstwa Nauki i Szkolnictwa Wyższego

oai:ojs.pressto.amu.edu.pl:article/13332The present article amounts to an attempt to analyze the work Axe is the name of mine by Alexander Dugin — a theorist of Eurasianism ideology in Russia. In this article Dugin touches upon the novel Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoyevsky. Dugin analyzes the novel in the context of cultural opposition between the orthodox Russia and the secular Western Europe, whose symbol is the capital of the Russian Empire— Saint Petersburg. The city in this case is the negation of the orthodox tradition of Moscow — The Third Rome. Dugin extremely relativized the meaning of Dostoyevsky‘snovel

Dignity: Two Riddles and Four Concepts

“Dissecting Bioethics,” edited by Tuija Takala and Matti Häyry, welcomes contributions on the conceptual and theoretical dimensions of bioethics. The section is dedicated to the idea that words defined by bioethicists and others should not be allowed to imprison people's actual concerns, emotions, and thoughts. Papers that expose the many meanings of a concept, describe the different readings of a moral doctrine, or provide an alternative angle to seemingly self-evident issues are therefore particularly appreciated. The themes covered in the section so far include dignity, naturalness, public interest, community, disability, autonomy, parity of reasoning, symbolic appeals, and toleration

Literary Mystification: Hermeneutical Questions of the Early Dialectical Theology

This contribution addresses some hermeneutical problems related to Karl Barth's Römerbrief II. First, it surveys the role of the unpublished archive materials from the Karl Barth-Archiv, i.e. the commentaries, text additions and corrections Eduard Thurneysen sent to Barth during his work on Römerbrief II. Second, because Barth and Thurneysen allude to a literary character from Dostoevsky, Ivan Karamazov, the problem of an appropriation of literature in theology is discussed. These hermeneutic problems have a deeper theological ground, exemplified in Thurneysen's proposal for an extensive insertion in Barth's commentary on Rom. 8:18, which was entirely adopted by Barth and thus came to function as an integral part of Barth's commentary on Rom. 8:17-18. An appendix lists the extant documents of Thurneysen's intensive occupation with Römerbrief II (commentaries on Barth's manuscript, the galley and paper proofs). These documents are relevant for the genesis and chronology of Römerbrief II and yield important new insights into social, political and intellectual aspects of the Umwelt of early dialectical theology
