    Beam scanning by liquid-crystal biasing in a modified SIW structure

    A fixed-frequency beam-scanning 1D antenna based on Liquid Crystals (LCs) is designed for application in 2D scanning with lateral alignment. The 2D array environment imposes full decoupling of adjacent 1D antennas, which often conflicts with the LC requirement of DC biasing: the proposed design accommodates both. The LC medium is placed inside a Substrate Integrated Waveguide (SIW) modified to work as a Groove Gap Waveguide, with radiating slots etched on the upper broad wall, that radiates as a Leaky-Wave Antenna (LWA). This allows effective application of the DC bias voltage needed for tuning the LCs. At the same time, the RF field remains laterally confined, enabling the possibility to lay several antennas in parallel and achieve 2D beam scanning. The design is validated by simulation employing the actual properties of a commercial LC medium

This Irish Ocean Climate & Ecosystem Status Summary for Policymakers brings together the latest evidence of ocean change in Irish waters. The report is intended to summarise the current trends in atmospheric patterns, ocean warming, sea level rise, ocean acidification, plankton and fish distributions and abundance, and seabird population trends. The report represents a collaboration between marine researchers within the Marine Institute and others based in Ireland’s higher education institutes and public bodies. It includes authors from Met Éireann, Maynooth University, the University of Galway, the Atlantic Technological University, National Parks and Wildlife, Birdwatch Ireland, Trinity College Dublin, University College Dublin, Inland Fisheries Ireland, The National Water Forum, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the Dundalk Institute of Technology.This report is intended to summarise the current trends in Ireland’s ocean climate. Use has been made of archived marine data held by a range of organisations to elucidate some of the key trends observed in phenomena such as atmospheric changes, ocean warming, sea level rise, acidification, plankton and fish distributions and abundance, and seabirds. The report aims to summarise the key findings and recommendations in each of these areas as a guide to climate adaptation policy and for the public. It builds on the previous Ocean Climate & Ecosystem Status Report published in 2010. The report examines the recently published literature in each of the topic areas and combines this in many cases with analysis of new data sets including long-term time series to identify trends in essential ocean variables in Irish waters. In some cases, model projections of the likely future state of the atmosphere and ocean are presented under different climate emission scenarios.Marine Institut

    Examinee Variance in Strategy Shifts During Testing: An Explanatory IRT Approach

    Considerable work (both within the psychometric and cognitive literature) has explored the tendency for response strategies to shift within the course of a single assessment. The current project proposes a novel, flexible item response model that intends to capture the pattern of these strategy shifts, as well as any latent classes defined by differences in these shifting patterns. The novel model represents an integration of hidden Markov techniques within the framework of Explanatory Item Response Modeling. The feasibility of such a modeling approach is evaluated via parameter recovery with a set of Monte Carlo simulations, and its practical utility demonstrated with an empirical example involving response data from a spatial reasoning task. While structural parameters are generally estimated well, much caution should be exercised when interpreting person level parameters.Ph.D

    An exploration of adherence and persistence in overactive bladder and other long-term conditions

    Background and aims Overactive bladder is a common, bothersome, and chronic condition associated with symptoms of urinary urgency, incontinence, increased daytime micturition frequency and nocturia. Despite exerting a significant burden on quality of life, adherence, and persistence behaviours with OAB are particularly poor in comparison with other long-term conditions. The aims of the present work were to explore themes relating to medicine-taking behaviours in OAB and other long-term conditions and to suggest ways to improve them. Methods A systematic literature review was undertaken to understand the current landscape of qualitative work exploring adherence and persistence with OAB patients. A qualitative study involving 1:1 semi-structured interviews was conducted with OAB patients to explore the context and drivers for adherence and persistence behaviours using thematic analysis. A comparative analysis was then undertaken with qualitative papers exploring medicinetaking behaviours in a chronic bowel condition, type II diabetes, and multimorbidity to explore the themes identified in the OAB study for convergence and divergence in other conditions and to contextualise the learnings from the former study. Results The systematic literature review revealed a gap in the literature of qualitative exploration of adherence and persistence behaviours in OAB patients. The OAB study found a range of drivers for non-adherent behaviours including a perceived lack of treatment efficacy, side effects, unclear instructions, and drug and condition hierarchies, as well as the rich context within which these themes sit. The comparative analysis study supported the findings of the OAB study demonstrating evidence of key themes transcending across conditions, including a perceived lack of treatment efficacy and side effects, as well as nuances associated with the OAB experience. Conclusions The present work has identified key drivers for non-adherent behaviours in OAB patients and sets out a number of recommendations categorised within the World Health Organisation’s 5 dimensions of adherence. These include addressing the poor understanding and illness perception of OAB by patients and others, by improving the provision and availability of information, as well as the work of patient support groups; scrutiny on the support within primary care to OAB patients before and after diagnosis; and the encouragement of realistic expectations of the condition and treatment with mindful use of prescriber’s language at the point of prescribing. The present work has further highlighted the utility of conceptual models of adherence such as COM-B and the NCF in understanding medicine-taking behaviours in the context of OAB

    Dissertation presented as the partial requirement for obtaining a Master's degree in Data Science and Advanced Analytics, specialization in Data ScienceBeing a disabled student the author faced higher education with a handicap which as experience studying during COVID 19 confinement periods matched the findings in recent research about the importance of digital accessibility through more e-learning intensive academic experiences. Narrative and systematic literature reviews enabled providing context in World Health Organization’s International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health, legal and standards framework and information technology and communication state-of-the art. Assessing Portuguese higher education institutions’ web sites alerted to the fact that only outlying institutions implemented near perfect, accessibility-wise, websites. Therefore a gap was identified in how accessible the Portuguese higher education websites are, the needs of all students, including those with disabilities, and even the accessibility minimum legal requirements for digital products and the services provided by public or publicly funded organizations. Having identified a problem in society and exploring the scientific base of knowledge for context and state of the art was a first stage in the Design Science Research methodology, to which followed development and validation cycles of an Inclusive Intelligent Learning Management System Framework. The framework blends various Data Science study fields contributions with accessibility guidelines compliant interface design and content upload accessibility compliance assessment. Validation was provided by a focus group whose inputs were considered for the version presented in this dissertation. Not being the purpose of the research to deliver a complete implementation of the framework and lacking consistent data to put all the modules interacting with each other, the most relevant modules were tested with open data as proof of concept. The rigor cycle of DSR started with the inclusion of the previous thesis on Atlântica University Institute Scientific Repository and is to be completed with the publication of this thesis and the already started PhD’s findings in relevant journals and conferences

    Corporate Social Responsibility: the institutionalization of ESG

    Understanding the impact of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) on firm performance as it relates to industries reliant on technological innovation is a complex and perpetually evolving challenge. To thoroughly investigate this topic, this dissertation will adopt an economics-based structure to address three primary hypotheses. This structure allows for each hypothesis to essentially be a standalone empirical paper, unified by an overall analysis of the nature of impact that ESG has on firm performance. The first hypothesis explores the evolution of CSR to the modern quantified iteration of ESG has led to the institutionalization and standardization of the CSR concept. The second hypothesis fills gaps in existing literature testing the relationship between firm performance and ESG by finding that the relationship is significantly positive in long-term, strategic metrics (ROA and ROIC) and that there is no correlation in short-term metrics (ROE and ROS). Finally, the third hypothesis states that if a firm has a long-term strategic ESG plan, as proxied by the publication of CSR reports, then it is more resilience to damage from controversies. This is supported by the finding that pro-ESG firms consistently fared better than their counterparts in both financial and ESG performance, even in the event of a controversy. However, firms with consistent reporting are also held to a higher standard than their nonreporting peers, suggesting a higher risk and higher reward dynamic. These findings support the theory of good management, in that long-term strategic planning is both immediately economically beneficial and serves as a means of risk management and social impact mitigation. Overall, this contributes to the literature by fillings gaps in the nature of impact that ESG has on firm performance, particularly from a management perspective

    Automatic Question Generation to Support Reading Comprehension of Learners - Content Selection, Neural Question Generation, and Educational Evaluation

    Simply reading texts passively without actively engaging with their content is suboptimal for text comprehension since learners may miss crucial concepts or misunderstand essential ideas. In contrast, engaging learners actively by asking questions fosters text comprehension. However, educational resources frequently lack questions. Textbooks often contain only a few at the end of a chapter, and informal learning resources such as Wikipedia lack them entirely. Thus, in this thesis, we study to what extent questions about educational science texts can be automatically generated, tackling two research questions. The first question concerns selecting learning-relevant passages to guide the generation process. The second question investigates the generated questions' potential effects and applicability in reading comprehension scenarios. Our first contribution improves the understanding of neural question generation's quality in education. We find that the generators' high linguistic quality transfers to educational texts but that they require guidance by educational content selection. In consequence, we study multiple educational context and answer selection mechanisms. In our second contribution, we propose novel context selection approaches which target question-worthy sentences in texts. In contrast to previous works, our context selectors are guided by educational theory. The proposed methods perform competitive to related work while operating with educationally motivated decision criteria that are easier to understand for educational experts. The third contribution addresses answer selection methods to guide neural question generation with expected answers. Our experiments highlight the need for educational corpora for the task. Models trained on noneducational corpora do not transfer well to the educational domain. Given this discrepancy, we propose a novel corpus construction approach. It automatically derives educational answer selection corpora from textbooks. We verify the approach's usefulness by showing that neural models trained on the constructed corpora learn to detect learning-relevant concepts. In our last contribution, we use the insights from the previous experiments to design, implement, and evaluate an automatic question generator for educational use. We evaluate the proposed generator intrinsically with an expert annotation study and extrinsically with an empirical reading comprehension study. The two evaluation scenarios provide a nuanced view of the generated questions' strengths and weaknesses. Expert annotations attribute an educational value to roughly 60 % of the questions but also reveal various ways in which the questions still fall short of the quality experts desire. Furthermore, the reader-based evaluation indicates that the proposed educational question generator increases learning outcomes compared to a no-question control group. In summary, the results of the thesis improve the understanding of the content selection tasks in educational question generation and provide evidence that it can improve reading comprehension. As such, the proposed approaches are promising tools for authors and learners to promote active reading and thus foster text comprehension
